Once you put on the vented hood did anyone notice any improvement to front end handling? I guess what I'm trying to ask, is well I saw this site where this guy was saying by adding a vented hood it would also add downforce to the front end. Is that true?
This is comming from a guy that routinly runs his fiero up to 120mph, adding VENTS HELPS ENORMOUSLY. I had my car at 110mph cruising along for about 15 miles. Temp stayed at 1/4 on the gauge, and the front end was stable even going over some uneven pavement. I would have driven much further, but I got a call that the person in the fiero following me had broken down. (he had leaned out so badly that he blew the core out of a spark plug)
yes - hood vent helps a lot especially if you combine it with the chin spoiler that traps air up through the radiator... i had this setup and i could feel the car get closer to the ground over 90mph... front end would start to really stick to the road , felt great
At speed all of the air coming through the grill passes through the radiator and has no easy way out. This results in a high pressure area under the hood which can only vent under the car. The high pressure air results in lift as it escapes. In theory at least (my hood isn't finished yet), the vents will allow the air to escape reducing the pressure under the hood and thus reducing lift.
As Kohburn states, combine the vent with a chin spoiler which directs air into the radiator grill and you should reduce lift even more.
BTW make sure your front grill has all of the necessary shrouding so that the air entering must go through the radiator.
As my webpage states I think the vented hood really helps at speeds over 70 mph. My hood vent is giant, with a total opening area of 63 square inches when measure perpendicular to direction of air flow. 18 inches wide by 3.5 inches deep. In winter, when driving in the snow, one can see the snow get blown up away from the vent in the hood.
Other vented hood I have, seen with 12 square inches or less of opening, really don't add downforce (or reduce lift). I have even seen vented hoods where the opening of the vent was infront of the radiator.

Smoooooth GT, I was designing a similar vent for my hood, but one opening instead of two, BTW Really like yours, very F-50'ish. Would you be so kind as to take and post a pic or two of the inside of your front compartment? I'm wondering how much of the front wall needs to be removed. Shades

hey smooth, love the hood, just one question though, did you have to cut out the entire opening, then fabricate the "scoops", or did you just make the cuts, and the force the hood into the shape you wanted. thanks for any advice on how to make this.

I looked around and couldnt seem to find anyone who sells one right off, any advice?
Rockcrawl sells one, Archie sells a kit. Some people just "cut and glass" the hood, while others use various vents from other cars like Z's or TA's, but these have to be reversed because they're designed to pull air in, not out.
The chin spoiler mentioned is available from Doug Kinney http://www.fierowarehouse.com/ but I don't think he has a hood scoop kit. ------------------ Notchbacks Rule 84 Coupe(parts car) 85GT(show car) 87SE Gold(project car) 87SE Silver(daily driver) 88Coupe (daily driver) 88Formula (daily driver)
