I'm slowly building up to burning new EPROMs for tuning my ECM. One of the things I wanted to do to make this process easier was to add a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket to the ECM to make changing chips easier. So, I got out a spare 7170 ECM and removed the old socket. At first I thought I'd have problems with the conformal coating that GM put on the boards, but the soldering iron burned through it no problem, and it didn't hinder soldering the new socket in place. I went with the slide-type ZIF socket because it was free, given to me by a friend. Hey, the best things in life are free, right?

The socket is low enough that it and the chip fit under the cover, with the removal of a bit of foam for clearance.
