Okay, for you Canadians (Across-the-pond'ers too) with a heavy right foot (engine-swappers too), I'm looking at getting my 240Km/h (150mph) speedo professionally printed on plastic faces, like stock. Unlike some of the replacement faces I've seen, these look almost identical to the stock faces.
My only decision is whether to make them in different colours as well as the orange, or just the stock ones. I'm also looking at doing a full set of replacement faces (with AUX and HVAC faces), with either blue or late-model red backlighting, and either white or black faces.
I'm trying to make an alternative to the (expensive) indiglo faces, with a slightly more stock-looking setup. I do like the reverse-indiglo, but I can't afford the cash for those.
Anyway, I'm mostly concerned about the speedo. If enough people are interested, I'll consider doing a full face replacement.
Also, I can supply the proper value crystal to convert the speedo. You'll have to get it soldered on yourself, though. If enough people want, I might be able to get some units pre-soldered and sell them on an exchange basis.
Price will largely depend on how many people want them, and how many variations. I'm hoping for around $30 for just the speedo, or $60-75 for the full cluster...
Even if nobody else wants a speedo, I'm doing a small run for the local guys, probably just the stock orange backlighting.
Here's a sample of the speedo. I scanned the face then spent way too many hours perfecting it in PS.
You can either email me or PM me, or post here if you're interested.
Thanks for your time,
Kris

Little, Yellow, Different New sig pic with 17's coming soon!
sounds VERY interesting; I am interested but will have to sort thru what is involved in adapting to my new 284 trans (if anything) so that is my provision. But you made the Ottawa club website so people are looking at it!! When do you think you will do this production run?

i went through this about 4 years ago with my 87GT - converted an 85mph guage to 150 - i have a bunch of the crystals left and i made stock looking faces for the speedo and tach - only difference is i used about 6 layers of transparency and laminated them rather than getting proffessionally printed - cost about 5$ in materials to do it all - if you are running tite on cash its the way to go - i also used autocad to make sure the increments were acurate.. maybe i'll post a pic later tonight - i tried both black face and white face.. ended up liking the black face the most - its also pretty easy to replace the fieros backlighting bulbs with some nice bright colored LED's that are the 194 size

Kris you know I want one, and I will even pay up front for one. I burried my speedo 4 times this weekend. It would sure be nice to know how much over 190kph I am going.
If you can get those produced to match the stock backlit guages , both lit, and unlit, I'll definetely take 2, maybe a few more.
I'm not trying to be picky about them matching, but I truely do prefer the stock guages over the other ones, and I don't want to have mixed looking guages.
This looks promising, I'll be following it with interest

I am also interested. As for a core I have one ready to send out of my 85. I would like this for my caddy power 88 four speed auto. Barry. barrymc@win.eastlink.ca
Well, I don't want to re-invent the wheel here. If Kohburn has a replacement that's stock-quality, then I'm not going to waste the time and money getting these made. Part of the cost of these was getting them cut and printed on plastic, to match the originals exactly, but if these are close enough, why bother.
Do you have any detail pics of these installed, lit or non-lit?
Regards,
Kris

If I read Kohburn's post correctly, his speedos are calibrated for 150mph.
Please don't give up the ghost just yet. I imagine that most Canadian drivers are far more interested in a dial which shows km/h than mph.
Ratings don't make the world go 'round, but they are nice to have. If you find what I have to say helpful, please click on that Rate this member link over to the left.
For us 'ol canadians from the old school we can swing both ways (thats mph or kph). I am more intersted in getting a speedo that does not spin around the clock. So anyone that can change my 140 kph (85 mph) to read over 240 kph or 150 mph, please contact me off line.

I think I said it in the PM I sent you yesterday(?), but for a 240km/h white-on-black overlay & recalibration crystal (I can do my own soldering job), my $30 becomes yours.

yes the one I made was 150 MPH.. and i found i have the crystals to convert both 85 and 120 mph speedos to the 150 - however it does not look exactly stock - I had put different text on the face (which could be changed) - rather than me trying to be a supplier I'll give DIY instructions and images to anyone who wants to make their own custom guage - and give any support I can to Kris if he wants to undertake making a good professionally printed fiero guage convertion

Sorry for not sending out an update, things have been busy on the homefront.
I ran into a snag where I have to redo everything, though with some help from MinnGreenGT, I should be done much faster now.
As soon as I get the graphics done I'll head back to the printers to get final pricing, then I'll let you guys know. How many of you will definately take one? This will be just a speedo, in km/h, black face with white lettering, and orangey-red backlighting, very close to stock.
And regarding the speedo crystal, yes there is a formula, but I don't have it handy. I made an excel file to input what I want, and it tells me what crystal to use.
Thanks for the interest.
Cheers,
Kris

Just remember that the formula shown in the OSG uses miles per hour, not kilometers.
Converting 240km/h to miles gives us:
MHz = 534 / 150mph MHz = 3.56
Yeah I know I'm stating the obvious, but if someone didn't do it, someone else would likely have overlooked it and wondered later why their speedo was reading disturbingly low.

Still working at this Kris, or have other things taken over?
Heh... not really taken over, just helped to delay things...
I've got lists of things to do, and with the snag it's taking a bit longer. Relearning new software etc...
Anyway, I'll try to put a rush on things. I'm working 6 days this week, so there's not a lot of spare time, but hopefully I can devote some time to it next week.
I have other faces for some years now but haven't got the the crystal change yet....(only put some little marks for speedlimits )
Where IS the crystal on the gaugehousing and how to change it? How the #@$ does it look like anyway? What mhz crystal do I need when 120MPH has to equal 240 KMH...
pictures pleezzz!

Well, as you all know, things have a way of screwing up on you when you least expect it.
Once work finally calmed down and things were looking up, some low-life tries stealing my car. They managed to bust a big hole in my steering column and hotwired it, but they couldn't get it started. Thankfully I pull the coil wire off at night. Stupid auto wreckers want $250 CDN just for a column, so I have to go through insurance for it, and just pay the deductible ($200 after alarm rebate).
Well, if I can manage to free up some time this month, I'll work on getting these done. Worst case, early next year. I'll try to make sure I post something here once a month whether I make progress or not.
Part of the problem is that big wall I'm facing, of trying to learn Illustrator by jumping right in. Had I just been able to use the photoshop file, I'd have been done months ago. Anyway, I'll have something done soon.
It would be neat to get a speedo with a redline like the tach. Have it start yeallow at 130kph... then slowly hit sold red at 240kph .
Either way, when you get them done place send me a PM. I will probably buy one. Need a new speedo sensor first tho. Mine is reading about 80% too slow .

Well, I've actually gained a little headway with this silly project. I'll hopefully have a little spare time around the Christmas holiday. Christmas day and New Years Day are the only two days my work is closed, so there's two days off at least.
There's one thing that I'm not sure if everyone realizes. So far, the gauge faces I'm working on are only for the backlit gauges. That's (I think) '86 and newer V6's. Anything else might not look right. The front (side) lit gauges would theoretically be easier to make, but harder to make look stock. If enough people are seriously interested in replacement faces for the front-lit gauges, I can see about getting the supplier to print overlays for these gauges. I just can't be certain they'd look good. The early style gauges are printed onto a metal face, while the later (backlit) ones are plastic overlays on a plexiglass (acrylic) face.
Anyway, look for another update early in the new year! I've got to get thsi on the road, I need to fund my interior project.
Cheers,
Kris
<EDIT> <VENT> Every stupid little line on each gauge has to be converted into four stupid points. Do you know how aggravating it is to make 100,000,000 stupid little points?!?! </VENT> </EDIT>

D'Oh. Well add me to the list of those hoping for a front-lit style overlay. Hopefully I'm not the only one.

Hmmm... maybe it's time to start hoping that the sales will cover the costs of any needed carpal tunnel therapy instead of funding your interior project?
