Looking to go smooth. What kind of filler did you use? Also, did you do anything special to make it stick?

Personally I would use fibreglass. Drill lots of holes for it to run through as that will help create an extra strong bond. Then grind/sand into shape then use very minimal bondo to fill any low spots.

Use the drilling holes like aus but I used bondo-glass.

Check out this thread about half ways down. it has a good pic of what gets filled and what shape you are left with.

How hard is it to sand and smooth the edges for someone with minimal experience in fiberglass? Is it going to look worse than before?

I am doing that mod right now and what I did was to use1-1/4"drywall screws to drill through the round moldings then used a grinder to grind the head of the screws(this holds it in place and stops the molding from moving around so no crack) flat till they are counter sinked into the molding.I then used a sandpaper disc to rough up the molding and surrounding areas and use gorilla hair bondo to fill every thing in after which it is sanded to match the contour of the car.I am not using the side lights as these are filled in also with moldings and then covered.
