What does the new black hose I replaced in the center of the pic do, except set a Code 32 if it's missing? What does it connect to/from if I wanted a new one? The pic in the Chilton manual shows a nice right angle boot on the factory piece although this made the the 'check wallet' light go out. Just curious since this is good enough for my 'winter' 87 SE.

The short length of hose that's new in that picture runs from the vacuum to the EGR valve to a vacuum-sensing switch inside that little block. The job of that switch is to check if the EGR vacuum line is actually holding vacuum when the ECM commands the EGR solenoid to open the EGR valve. If that hose is missing then you'll set a code 32.

Thanks Jazzman, I knew it solved my problem. I just didn't know why.

Unfortuntely I don't know. It came with the car which now has 208K so it may have been there for some time. Now that you mention it though, I think I'll look in the McMaster Carr catalogue at work and see if they have something that matches. It works the same as the original but the 'wing' part doesn't fold down.

That screw is the '84 Fiero grill screw. It was replaced in later years with a flip-down style screw that was easier to grip.
