Sup guys, I've had a Fiero (88 Formula) for a few years now and I've decided not to buy a new car, but to modify the Fiero. The 3.4L swap w/ forced induction sounds the best to me, yet after searching the forum for as humanly possible, the only information I was able to obtain was that I need the 3.4L block from a 93-95 Firebird and to relocate the starter. Is there any other parts that I need from the 3.4L such as heads, pan, ect? Or is the block only necessary? I'm a student at Lincoln Technical Institute and whenever I get into the Engine Performance course they will allow me to use their facility and tools for the project, but courses are only 4 weeks long so I can't be waiting around for parts to arrive because I ordered the wrong ones. Remember, I'm only a student and still learning, so don't assume that I know all the obvious parts, If you could put it in "3.4 swap for dummies" terms I would appreciate it!

Thanks a bunch!
-Mark

The block and starter move is all you need. The intake, valve covers and other stuff can come from the old Fiero 2.8 engine. If you get a used 3.4 block ~10 years old now, it too may need a rebuild unless you find a good low milage one. http://www.twinlakesfiero.com/ for assistance.

Recognize that the 3.4 F body heads and the Fiero 2.8 heads are identical. They are both H.O. heads and have the same ports and valve sizes. They are *completely* interchangeable.
Also, I would personally recommend pintle type injectors as opposed to disc type. The disc type respond much more quickly than the Fiero ECM is expecting. The result can be excessive fuel flow at idle, which will cause "hunting".
Having said that, 17 lb. pintle type injectors are a bit uncommon. The only manufacturer I know of, for certain, is Accel.
I used 19 lb. Bosch pintle type injectors in mine, with a custom chip.
Also recognize that several folks on this Forum are using disc type injectors with good success.
YMMV.

[EDIT] If you're going to be running forced induction, you'll probably need bigger injectors. I'm guessing 24 lb., but that's a complete shot in the dark. I'm sure others can comment.
Dennis LaGrua has a great deal of experience with the 3.4, with a turbo. He'd be a good person to ask.

It's a pretty simple swap. If you're trying to keep a low budget you can get #19 mustang injectors off of ebay for ~$40. They are the disc style, but I'm running them with no problems and I'm still on the stock chip.

I would highly recomend the starter jig set from Rodney. It's a bit pricey for a 1 time job, but it's worth it. If you want to save money there, you can probrably pick one up from a forum member. It comes with great instructions as well. You'll also need his oil pressure adapter.

The only other challange is if you have an auto tranny. You'll need to cut away some of the meat arround one of the bosses. Nothing major, about 20 minutes and an electric die grinder and you should be fine. You'll also have to drill out one of the bosses. The trick for these two steps is just to compair the new block to the old one when you pull it out.

If you're going with boost, you'll have to find a few alternative solutions, #17 injectors are good for a stock 3.4l, #19 will cover a fully modded 3.4l (I think the calculation was about #18.6 for optimal injectors), but I imagine with boost you'll have to go with more fuel.

If you want to get a quality short or long block though, I would suggest www.GopherEngines.com, their engines are in pristine shape, I was extremely pleased when my long block showed up.

There are also a few holes that will need to be plugged on the new block. I don't remember the sizes, but I had a good variety of rubber freeze plugs and old sensors on hand to take care of them
Get any gaskets you may need and other then that, you have everything you need. All your stock '88 mounts, wires, adapters, etc, will all work.

Solo and Raydar pretty much covered it. I used Lucas 24lb disk on my 3.2 turbo Formula. Had a custom chip made. 24lb is about the maximum the saturated driver can handle. Usually anything over 30lb are low resistance peak and hold, the Fiero ECM will not work with these. If you are going turbo I would use forged pistons. You may be able to use Hyperutectic, however the engine management system must be first rate..........Paul
