It could be that your tach filter went bad. You can try unplugging it and shorting the terminals together to see if the tach works again.

Tach filter is located near the coil.looks like a little can with 2 wires coming out. GM no longer has them , but Rodney Dickman does. A real common Fiero problem.

The Chilton manual is probably better than nothing and very affordable, but Haynes is MUCH better. You may be able to find a used factory manual at a swap meet or from someone who deals in old automotive literature.

Tachometer Filter is on the top of the engine by the ignition coil. It has a two wire connector attached and it is connected between the ignition coil's primary and feeds through the wiring harness to the Tach gauge. It is passive device made up of a couple resistors and capacitors.
Hope this helps,

Filter... an 87 COUPE doesn't have one.... L4... DIS engine. (Only V6 has them for 87-88)

Check the plugs on the ignition brick. Also check C500 by the battery. They are weather resistant but they can still crap up.

I think all the dash runs off one fuse. Not sure.

Mine does this once in a great while. Something in the dash is a hair loose. I just slap the dash and it comes back. In my spare time I'll spend several hours digging thru the thing but it has only happened a couple times in the several years I've had the car so it's hardly worth bothering.

heres a pic of the tach filter on the v6. its on the left side of the valve cover. kinda between the distributer, valve cover, and the ignition coil. im sure it looks the same on the L4

EDIT: was trying to get the picture up and Ogre posted before me. by the off chance that it its a v6 thats what it looks like

My 86 GT tachs at 5500 at a normal sounding idle. Would that be the resistor looking thing (filter) connected to the plug? Quick fix or replace?

Don't bother with Haynes... they are useless for that version of L4. It may be usefull for some other parts. maybe...

got in the car today and the tach was working so it must be a loose wire somewhere.
what is the pontiac fiero do it yourself manual? i have seen this but if it says the same thing as the haynes and chilton manual i wouldnt need it.
