I thought that "naked" might get some attention, but seriously... I have an SE that came with a factory luggage rack. I think the rack is unsightly, and also pretty useless. I want to remove it. Which will leave holes, of course. How to fill those holes is my question. I'm pretty handy with Bondo but I'm not sure its such a good idea for this application. By the way, I have seen both notchbacks and Fastbacks with nothing back there, no spoiler, no rack, and I think it's a really nice look. Clean, sharp, understated...

Remove the screwplugs and put duct tape on the back side. Then you'll find that body filler will work, but you'd be better off using fiberglass, but of course it's harder to work with, unless you know what you're doing. Actually, I always wondered what it would look like if you left the ribs from the rack on and then added a spoiler. I think it would look kinda kewl.

Dude,

I saw a car at last 20 years anniversary weekend a fastback with both the rack and the spoiler! odd looking, but different. Maybe they actually need the rack. It was a long drive to Michigan for a lot of people, I bet some of them wished the had a rack (BTW, I live about five miles from that event. I worked for a few weeks at P-car assembly back in '85)

Phil, thanks for your response. I like you idea about the ribs and spoiler. I know in fact that combination would work. When I got this car, all it had was ribs. I got the rest of the parts from Bob at Kickhill. I think I'll use filler. the whole deck is going to have some serious refinishing (detached from the car; I'm doing the hood off the car as well). I think it would be attractive with nothing back there. My GT notchie has enough spoiler for to make be happy (does great at creating blind spots, I must say..lol...

Don't use body filler, bondo, or Fiberglass.

Use the SMC stuff. It is what the decklid is made out of. You can get it at most auto body shops.
Using anything else will show the holes later since the other products tend to expand/contract differently than the SMC.

Thanks Orief, do you know the more exact name for this stuff. And I think you're right about that different expansion/contraction with filler.

It is made by "Duramix", Here's a pic of the stuff with part numbers. The tall left can is for the flexible panels and the right one is for rigid panels. You can order them on-line here:
