I just realized 2 minutes ago that when I reassembled my Camaro 3.4 pushrod motor, I used my flywheel off my '86 2.8. I did NOT use an '88 flywheel or a 3.4 TDC flywheel and I forgot to grind off the weight on 2.8 flywheel. Oddly enough, I don't recall ever even seeing the big weight on the flywheel. As I recall, it looked uniform all over.
At any rate, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? How bad is it to have that flywheel on there assuming its not neutrally balanced? Can I live with it or will it do serious damage? Help!

someone on here just did a similar thing, and commented how much smoother the motor was when he got it right. it all depends on how out of balance the flywheel is. you will lose HP's to vibration, and really work you main bearings. if you have poly motor bushings, you will have a nice back massage tho....and if they are rubber - they will be ripped up.
If you have an extra flywheel, get it machined, or maybe find the right one. This will minimize the time that the car is apart. Otherwise, i would just pull the trans through the driverside wheel well, unbolt the clutch and flywheel, then swap the new one one. It shouldn't take more than an afternoon to do. Good Luck!
(sorry to hear you forgot!)

if you dont remember seeing a weight, look for one now. Just pull the starter off and the flywheel cover off the trans. Rotate the engine by the crank and look at the back of the flywheel for the weight.
SOB this is not good. I've been driving it around a little today and yesterday. Its not vibrating hard at all. The idle is still stuck high, 2500-3000 RPMs and even like that its smoothe. On the other hand, when starting the car from a stop, it shakes a bit. The motor mounts are rubber BTW. Nothing appears to affected thus far. Runs fine, no problems other than the high idle.

FYI, get a flywheel from advanced auto for the 1988 beretta GT with 5 speed, thats what ive been using on my 3.4 swaps, and it seems to work fine, i believe 1988-1993 5 speed beretta GT's and 1987-1994 cavalier z24 5 speeds work just fine, they are only like $50 made by some perfection hytest company.

Yup. Just need some instructions on how to get the tranny out of the way so I can get the flywheel off. I'm almost thinking it'd be easier to drop the cradle and have room to work. Anyone got the instructions? I'm gonna pull the sucker, grind off the weight on the flywheel and put it all back together. One day job, just need to know what I'm doing.
Bummed that I forgot when I had it all out, and that I'm missing most of the Rally now. Oh well. It'll be ready for WestFest!
When I did mine, I took the wheel off, hung the brake, removed the strut/spindle/axel as one piece. Then I disconnected the clutch line, cables, undid the belhousing bolts. I unbolted the mounts from the cradle and pulled the trans off. It was a little tight around the crossover, but it will clear.
