Hello,

Like the topic says I need to change the TCC (lock-up solonoid) on my 85 GT auto. Does anyone out there in PFF land have instructions in their Chilton, Haynes or Factory Service Manual? My Chilton book does not have it in it.

If you have it please pm me and I'll get you my fax number or e-mail.

Thanks!

Mark

Good page with pictures.
Decent site.

Make sure to change the third gear switch while you are in there. You can do all the work without removing the engine or transmission. Just jack it up and remove the left rear wheel. You won't even lose much (a ounce or two) of tranny fluid.

Wingnut,
The Shop Manual has somewhat of a description in it, but nothing that tells you on how to actually do the job. Last time I did one for Fiero, it was really just simple Removal and Replacement. What makes it clearer is when you jack up the Drivers side rear wheel and remove it along with the wheel liner so you have room to take off the side cover (see Pic 1) on the tranny. You will have just a little fluid that will drip but not to much to pick up with a rag. You disconnect the 4 pin connector (see Pic 2) from the outside and follow the wiring in to the solenoid and pressure switch held in by a bolt or two. It's best to replace both the TCC solenoid and Pressure switch together as long as you're in there. I think they both ran me $48 from a Pontiac dealers parts dept. Tranny shops will sell those parts to you at about the same price.

Side Pan for access to TCC and press switch

Plug connector for TCC (front corner of tranny)

Hey guys,

Thank you both for the detailed info! The pictures help a bunch. I did a PFF search and found nothing, but did not think to do a Yahoo or Google search. a (+) for both of you for the help!

Does anyone know the part number on the pressure switch? I looked for it at the Fiero Store, but they do not seem to have it. I'll also try a local parts dealer.

Thanks again,

Mark

This will help also:

http://www.kichline.com/chuck/fiero/TCC.htm

BTW..... make sure you change the gasket while your at it. Also, in might be a good time to change the
tranny fuild while your at it. The whole TCC change took me about 3-1/2 - 4 hrs. doing it the first time.
Pretty straight forward job.
Good Luck,
-Michael

You can also buy replacement electrical connectors, both tranny and harness from GM. The harness connector tends to get brittle and the locking tab breaks off. Just go to GM dealer and if they are good they will find them.........Paul

I just replaced mine using the FITZALL replacement. Of course I already had the tranny out but you can see on my site the internals really well. Good Luck. Uhmm maybe I should have replaced the switch as well.

Paul and Midshipman,

Thank you both for your replies! Midship your pictures are great! I've made copies of them to help me along. This will be the biggest job I've done on my car so the help from everyone is greatly appreciated! (+'s to all)
