Removed the air box and want to put in a 4" filter. Anyone done it and what filter did you use?

Got ahold of a CRX intake tube, modified it to fit the GT.
Sounds killer, esp in the morning when it's cool out, and topped it off w/ a K&N Filter

K&N Extreme, PT# RX-473o.
3" inlet, and a 5 1/2" flange.

Just make sure it's not sucking hot air from the engine compartment.

There's a discussion on the Yahoo 3800 group about air filters right now... It was discovered that a 7" long K&N wasn't flowing enough CFM for the motor. (with some mods) I picked up the standard CRX filter / tube (3", doh!) but didn't even think about CFM's... Something in the 4" opening range should get you enough CFM, but you should research any one that you get.... Just an "FYI" thing....

Let me cut and paste this from my history of skitimes car thread.

Now previously I shamefully was using the stock restrictive 2.8 air intake system and air cleaner. I decided to build a cold air intake box and intake system with a K&N filter. I have a one-piece 4-inch rubber hose running from the throttle body to the K&N filter. I am designing a cold air box behind the Mecham side scoop for some ram air effect. Most of the Fieros I have seen just stick a filter behind the quarter panel and let it suck hot air from the surrounds. Not good! I want a completely sealed compartment for the filter that will only take in cool air.

With the redesigning of the air intake system I was able to relocate two ugly items in my engine compartment. I relocated the emissions canister and the cruise control vacuum tank away from my rear engine compartment to being hidden where the old air cleaner was. It is much nicer looking without those ugly things being visible.

Well after driving my GT finally after completing the cold air intake and intercooler. It felt so much stronger. I drove it hard and it felt like it definitely has more power. The power was right there all the time. It reminded me of a tightly wound rubber band. After the spirited drive the intercooler was only warm and it would of been too hot to touch before. I was pleased with that. The new intake system really lets the whine of the supercharger come through. Sweet! I had the expected drop in boost but now it time to put the smaller pulleys on. hehe

Here is my cold air intake box. I made two panels out of steel to close the area. All seams were taped with metal duct tape as well as any factory openings. The original fender liner was cut in the middle so you only need to remove the front half to service. The liner is sealed with gaskets as well.

Here is the new large K&N air filter in place.

My new air intake tube is awesome. It is heavy rubber with a steel coil inside to prevent collapse.

The custom rubber hose is so much better than PVC or metal. It reduces the heat transferred to the inside and does not transmit vibrations.

And here is the competed view through the engine-viewing window. The supercharger sure looks sweeter being 2 1/4 inches closer to the glass.

I know some people might advise against it.. but SOULCRUSHER suggested using PVC tubing and it's worked for me 1 year had to do a little modifying with the intercooler on there.

and have it blocked off from the engine heat and what not. I can snap pics tomorrow if you're interested. Total cost was $40-$50.. $36 K&N $4-10 for PVC

Here is an example of the air filter and the cruise both monted in the space ahead of the wheel well.

This filter is using an insulated 3 1/2" steel tube. The smaller cruise servo from later model GM cars was used.
