Just got off the phone with local parts guy and the rear caliper inboard shoe retaining clip (part number 18011729 84-87) has been discontinued by GM. Tried several of the on line sellers (GMPartsDirect) with the same result. Any one have some spares or know of an alternative from non GM source? There is only one available in my area and I am going to buy it now, but there are 2 per car and I desparately need another.

I got them as part of the hardware kit last time I bought. If you are missing the clips odds are you need the rubber bits and maybe the slides in the hardware kit. You'll need two kits if you go that route.

Thanks for the tip on AC Delco. The GM caliper overhaul kits do not include this clip any more. I just bought 4 kits for my cars and while they have all of the seals and o rings there are no clips. I will also call the Fiero Store and see if they will sell some. Howerver, when I ordered some other rear caliper overhaul items from them earlier this year (piston replacement kits) they did not have the clips at that time.

Today I tracked down a parts store who does business with the local AC Delco warehouse and they are trying to order the parts for me. There was only 1 in the Phoenix area and I should have it today. Hopefully AC Delco (who is GMs supplier for these parts) is still interested in making them. I also found out from the AC Delco website these parts were only used on Fiero and 85 to 88 6000 with rear disk brakes. A trip to the local junk yard over the weekend produced lots of broken parts in cars and only one semi useable clip.

Napa had them for me... $0.88 a piece, had to special order it. I also checked with the fiero store, and they said you can call in an order for $1.95 a piece.

The brake recall replaced the 84 pistons with the 85-87 type. If you still have wires the recall work probably wasn't done. Some say you can still get the dealer to do the work but GM recently discontinued the recall parts kit so I don't think it's possible anymore.

The Fiero Store sells the recall parts kit for about $50. Rebuilds two calipers. The AC Delco clips I got today (part number 179-1055) were in GM packages and had the GM number on them. The good news is that I got them. The bad news is there are at least two piston designs and the clips don't fit very will on the design in the car. I checked the recall parts kit I had from the Fiero Store and the piston head is different and the clips fit much better. I trimmed the retaining flange a little and the clips fit but we'll see if they hold up well.
Oh well at least I got my car back on the road. I also bought spares so I won't have this problem again for a while.
