Some of you may remember my transmission troubles a while back, I am pretty sure I have those issues beat. I thoroughly believe that a Cavalier Getrag 5 speed is much stronger than a 1984 Fiero 4 speed. I am pretty sure of this because, the other day I broke the driver’s side axle.
My car is a 1984 SE with an LT1 installed with a Zumalt kit. The Zumalt kit uses the custom size axles that move the engine and transmission 2 inches to the left (driver’s side.)
After a few hours of research I found the following contact information for shops that could get custom axles:

I also found a thread that mentioned using stock axels and an intermediate shaft from a berretta. Here is a link to the whole article:
https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Archives/Archive-000001/HTML/20050119-2-055164.html
Here is a quote of the useful information:
“Here is some info I got from Will (I think it was him) some time ago on how to possibly use factory axles and an intermediate shaft from a Beretta to move the engine/tranny combo 2" to the left:
Use a 94-96 Grand Am shaft (12 5/8") on the left and the 83 Celebrity, 83 6000, 89-91 Sunbird or 92-96 Silhouette & Transsport shaft (18 1/4") on the right with the Beretta intermediate shaft and a homemade bracket.”
What I have done to repair my car is to go to a CV Axle re-builder and have him match up an axle. I think it must be a Grand Am axle as mentioned above. He was able to find one that was .25 inches longer than what I had. It has worked for a few days now. It was funny though, I was quite happy to have found an easy to change weak link. I was less happy when the rebuilder said this axle will be much stronger than what was in there before since the OEM heat treats much better than the after market.
While I was at a car show this weekend called “Performance World” I found a Canadian HiPerformace axle builder who also recommended that I use an intermediate shaft since he felt that, it would be as strong or stronger than the single long axle, it would reduce and torque steer in the rear end and it would allow for replacement of custom axles with stock axles.
