Started taking off the rear end panels on my 87 notchie this past tuesday... Got off school today (yea, im a senior hoping to graduate this year...) Finished taking off the notchback clip this afternoon afternoon (took about 3 hours max to get the thing off, i just didnt have much daylight at once to do it all at one time, so i had to split each task up for each day... Im rambeling, time for me to get to the point of this thread...

Within the next month and a half (something like that) Id like to have my Fastback swap compleate and a few other mods (before carlisle)

Ironically, Madcurl recently crammed getting #16 well underway before daytona (props for him and his recent project... looking great) Which brings me to my next point... After the fastback swap, I plan on taking on the "widebody" project (will be followed in this thread) this will be approached very similar to what curley has done.

A few pix of the fastback swap underway will be taken tomorrow and posted Friday or Saturday, after that, well... You'll see

STAY TUNED !

It sounds like a great project. I love coupes that have been converted to fastbacks, (since I have one). Please post lots of pictures!

Id love to (will have a few posted every weekend, im using a very late 80's, early 90's comp. as my other 1 crashed...)

I've finally moved the 87 to the front burners.. If you don't herar from me for a week, it's ok. That just means this comp. has crashed as well... lol

But yes, Im still kicking around a few ideas in my head for this project...

Curley has used C06 headlights, and celica light (i believe) im looking for a few other alternatives in that area...

Only thing that really bites about this whole project is im still in high school and I don't have a job (income is coming from a few fiero parts sales... which isnt much) right now i'm looking for a few pieces to compleate the FB swap (weatherstrip...etc.)

The next week or 2 I expect to be rather slow, as I've gotta wait on a few parts to come in before i can attach the rear clip 100%.. Gotta wait on the taillight harness as well as squaring panels...

...meanwhile, I just got back from Wal*Mart, hehe

Just bought 12 cans of white Krylon (don't underestimate my paint job till its done) I definately expect a good turn out for the rough paintjob... I still gotta widen the rear too, so this wont be the last time Im seen with Krylon... (still have yet to see NAFAL pick up a can... J/K stevo... hehe)

Im debating on weather or not I should let it a hardtop or sunroof (since I got the headliner torn out, now would be the time to consider the opptions... I've got 2 compleate sunroof conversions, so it wont cost me anything, just a matter of removing the solid panel and swaping it with a sunroof 1...

lets see what I can get into within the next 2 or 3 days...

I've never tried it but there is a procedure to turn a notchback weatherstrip into a fastback by cutting it in the four corners and gluing it back together. It won'tlook perfect but it will work. It's worth a look as the fastback weatherstrips are hard to find used in good condition and the new ones are very expensive. Take a look on the search I'm sure it's in there somewhere.

If you have the parts I vote sunroof.

Good luck with your project.

por-15 is just one type of rust encapsulator - meaning it blocks rust from forming or spreading (with proper preperation

www.eastwood.com has their own encapsulator that is supposed to be even better than por

Got 1 coat of white paint on the clip, so the neighbors dont complain too bad about the multicolored fiero... Fixed all the rust I came across... Wasn't as much as i thought it was once i got the wheel well out i was slightly relieved, changed the impact bar thing in the rear (original 1 was covered in surface rust) and painted it flat black, and eith some of this rust repelant stuff from advanced...
Also found my fastback taillight harness, so i swaped it with the nortchie 1, and got all the bulbs in...

Thats it for now.. I'll get pix up later tonight... Maybe I'll get a few more responces on the build up (then again its only been like 1 day)

Here's a few pix to snack on till next weekend...

The donor car for the project... 1987 coupe, 4 cylander, auto... Not the best pix, but you get the idea...

got the decklid and notchback clip off... removed the sail panels with a 10-12" long flat head screw driver, disconnected the gas cap door and all the parts to that assembly, took out thights to access (8, i believe) 10mm bolts, removed 3 bolts on both sides... The hardest part IMO was getting the 3 bolts out along the inside of the rear window... (headliner WAS in mint condition, wasnt sagging or any of that) so I wanted to try and get the bolts out without removing or messing with the headliner too much.. needless to say thats a near impossible task... I wound up taking out the headliner to get to these 3... took out 3 plastic pop rivets (push rivets, whatever ya wanna call those pain in the butt black things), took them off both the drivers and passangers side where the clip meets the rear quarter panels... of, cant for get the metal rivets on each side, last thing holding the clip on nearest to the door openings... used a 1/8 inch drill bit to bore out the center of those and pulled em out with pointy nose pliers... then just for kicks, i connected the fastback decklid, and sat the rear clip in its future possition...

For those who havent taken off a rear clip (either notchback or fastback) theres 3 studs glassed into each clip (this is where i struggled with those 3 nuts inside along the rear window... well, not really struggled, just got annoyed... when removing the clip, it must be lifted up in the middle of the rear end (where the locking assembly on the decklid is) lifted up there and pulled strait back... watch out for the 3 obstructions sticking down under neath the roof panel (someone else can try to explain these things better if they'd like) look out for these when removing the clip...

Next i removed the rear fascia, and the metal strip that the taillights rest on, the taillight wiring harness light bulbs got behind this piece (its the white strip in the folowing pictures...) removed the wheel wells from the rear fascia (9/32 screws / mini bolts i believe) after this, i took out all of the large black push rivets out along the top and the bottom of the fascia. I removed these using a fork (ya know the kinda you use to eat with). Had some pointy nose pliers handy during this because i came to find this particular fork bends easy) "shhhh, don't tell mom i snatched a fork, she'll kill me" After my slight delima im about to explain, or briefly elaborate on, I removed the notchback taillight wiring harness, and stuck the fastback wiring harness on. Then after i painted that metal strip i tried to explain to you earlier white, I put that back on (held on by 7 3/8" bolts on located on the underside the thing)

Started early today, cause i discovered a little situation the day before, and i had a feeling my hands would be very full...

...Yes, as you may have read earlier in the thread, I ran into a good bit of surface rust.

The better side:

The less fortunate cancer filled patch...

Needless to say, that problem has been delt with, and Im ready to carry on with the panel swap (once i get my squaring panels)

I also replaced the rear impact bar (it was a huge piece of... rust)
the piece located behind the rear fascia honeycomb that is being pointed out by yellow arrows on either side...

Thats all the pix for now... More will be posted later

It's looking good Tim, I look forward to seeing it when it's done. I will be following how to do that widebody closely(hint, hint future project). Good luck with the rest of the car!

P.S. You need to get some real power behind that thing! Your gonna be the only one on PFF with a 2.5 powered GT. haha

Ehh... yea, prolly here for awhile (correction 2.5, widebody GT, with 10-12 inch wide rear tires) Eventually I smell an L67 or LT1 swap (hint, hint)

Any color suggestions? Im thinkin Pearl White (got a thing for white)

Definately not gonna be like smooth and not paint it... I'LL B NICE

Fenders for the tilt clip design... I cut the front quarter panels off the fenders, and smoothed them both shut... Got a little fine tuning to do on both of em... But you get the idea.

hmm, what could i be doing with this ?

got kinda bored of working on everything else for a day and tinkered with a few things, stuck the aero nose on for 1... but it eventually came back off so i can fabricate and mount a chin spoiler... hehe

Thats about it for now...

Did you still want those GT tail light inner lenses (the 3 color ones)? I've got a set now, a left and a right, collecting dust in my garage.
