I have an 85 gt and i just bought an 87 fastback section from a junkyard. The whoile thing wiring, deck lid, rear bumper, and the fastback section. I was just curious if there was anything special I needed to know or if it is just pretty standard bolt on procedure. I also wasnt sure what to do about the trunk, I could still go back and get the one from the other car but would rather modify my own. Thanks

Sounds like your well on your way, you may have picked these items up also and just did not mention them. Hopefully you got the deck vents, tail lights and the long screws, there is a difference between the coupe and fastback screws, and the rubber trunk gasket? Does your 85GT have the same molding under the doors as the 87? Yes, it is pretty much a take off the old stuff and put on the new stuff. Good luck. Bill

Yeah the seal is different, but its probally far gone already, and it comes off with the clip I believe. Yeah the engine vents are different and more rounded... Did you get those? If it has round moldings I would even go back and jack those... The bumper is rounded and yours is ridged.. It may look humorous, as well as the 87' molding looking alot better.. Just a thought.

What are sizing plates (are these the plates that the grill vents attach to?). I have a Formula and the rear bunper is steel... are the GTs aluminum?

Yea, i got the tail lights, deck vents, and ALL of the screws I took off. I was wondering about what to do with the trunk since the notchback is oval and the fastback is rectangular (square off the oval maybe?). The trunk weather strip is still on the car at the yard, so maybe go back and get it? A lot of the molding on the car is good except for the front from a pretty major accident (prolly what landed and decent car otherwise in the junkyard). I was in an accident myself and the front was so bad on my fiero that i cut it off and welded one on from another fiero, cant tell at all except for the ugly non-GT front end. Thanks for any help

Hi, The sizing plates are for the square trunk lid seal, they look like 2 black plastic 1/2 moons, the notchbacks have oval trunk lid seals. The Gt aluminum I was talking about is the top piece that sits on the inside guts , attached to the rear bumper assembly, this is mainly for GT facia placement. hope this helps..

Hi, Yep your going to need the Gt rear deck lid to complete the conversion, its a heck of alot easier using it than to try to fabricate one---un-less you do body work, yep grab that trunk seal , it may be bad , but those things are gettting hard to find and cost a small fortune, once you put on the Gt vent and brackets, sizing plates and rear deck lid, it will kinda fall into place --as to why you need the Gt deck lid. Hope this helps....

Hi, I also did the convertion like 2 months ago. It wasn't that easy with the taillights harness. My friend hooked it up to a fan swich or something, I dont know.(so turning lights would work) . we had to cut this bar that is holding the bumper up. it's curved in a notchie and straight in a fastback.

You will have to make a small modification to the taillight wiring harness to get the brake lights to work...it's not 100% plug and play. I can look up the thread in the archive, but I had to do it on my coupe.

Anything is possible. A notch back is a notchback, regardless of the motor in front of the set up.

Just so you know I'm the one who posted this thread originally but my name got messed up so this is my new one. Anyway, I did the conversion yesterday. It turned out nice but the tail lights are definitly screwy. The brake lights are the upper yellow part, the park lights are the bottom red, and the turn signals are the yellow. Other than that everything turned out fine. If someone can give me a little help with that it would be GREATLY appreciated. Also, my 85gt spoiler wont fit the 87 gt decklid, the bolt holes are too far apart. Is that how it is sopposed to be? I would post the pics I took of the fiero but i dont know how. thanks for any help

Are you using the GT rear wiring harness ?? If so, the light bulbs and sockets should plug right in, if there is a little shortage of wire preventing them, you could have put that aluminum top bumper lip on wrong or if needed you could pull out a couple of those plastic snaps that hold the wiring to the rear clip for extra room to get them to correct postions. As far as the rear spolier fitting from your 85GT to the 87GT ---it will not fit---look at # 14 I posted above. Looks like you`ll need a 86-88Gt rear spolier, stands and gaskets, check over at the mall for one, also , ebay. Or post for one at the mall. The only other way to do it--( I don`t reccomend) is to fill in the holes, then re drill for the 85GT spolier---lots of work and it won`t look as nice as a 86-88GT one would. Hope this helps..........

All of the lights plugged in. Like I said before though they are just lighting the tail lights wrong. jscott1 posted earlier here that something had to be modified with the harness for it to work. Also thanks for the tip about the spoiler.

Are the spoilers and stands different, or just the mounting location? My spoiler stands have 2 sets of holes for the suds, I though all that was needed was to move the studs to the other holes. ???

Is your car a manual, and the donor a automatic?? There may be a difference that may need to be modified--but this would be for the year of both cars--usually nothing else, Iv`e built 4-5 of these and they have always been plug-n-play, I did recall once someone mentioning a slight mod at the brake switch under the pedal arm. You may want to try Chris Pondski or Indy_Resto_Guy on the forum here, or look in the back of a Gm service manual or Haynes... They will have the specs you need. If all the lights work correctly--but are in different holes of your tail lamps, see if you can move them to the correct holes, you said they are just lighting the tail lights wrong--so, you have me kinda confused on that?? Did you go through and make sure all the bulbs are in correct sockets--eg: single filiment--in single sockets---double in double sockets, if this is not correct , all kinda wierd stuff wil happen, the last one I did that acted up after being checked for this--use to light up my cluster when I applied the brakes, turned out that one of the double filiments was leaning on the other one- inside the bulb---really hard to see and caught that one. In either case , we`ll get you back to the top and an answer for you--- allmost forgot the other harness I bought here looked ok , after carefully going through it--I found 4-5 wires pinched.... hope this helps .......

I think he was trying to put an 85GT spolier on a 87GT rear deck lid. 86-88Gt will fit the holes on the lid it-self with out drilling --but only for 86-88GT..

How are the lights sopposed to light up on a fastback. Im just guessing when headlights are on the bottom red lenses are lit, when you hit the brake the bottom red lenses are lit, and turn signals are the only thing that use the yellow lenses on top. If im wrong please correct me but thats my guess. My brake lights are the top yellow lights. I also forgot to mention that my side markers work. The fact that my car has cruise control may change things too since the cruise control wires are in the same bundle as the tail light wires.

Just so there is less confusion I made a diagram of the tail lights on the fastback. 1, 3, 11, and 13 are single filament turn signals on my car and also the brake lights. 2, 4, 12, and 14 are double filament parking lights. Lights 5-10 dont even work.

Okay it's been a year since I did it, and I've slept since then, so it's tough to remember, but I'll give it a try...

This is what Strick said:

What I did was on the coupe wiring harness is I removed a white jumper wiring going from G7-H8.

Translation - I think you have to physically remove C500 from the side of the car to see this, I'm not sure anymore. But if you look at C500 and you see a white wire connecting G7 to H8. (There is only one such wire) Cut that wire.

Strick: - Then on the GT harness I traced from my brake lights and found a blue wire was pined in at J9. I removed it from there and used the connector from the white wire and pined it in at G7.

Translation - I know with all the goo surrounding the wires I had a hard time figuring out which one was J9. What you want is a jumper between the two pins J9 and G7. You can hard wire it if you want and not worry about re-pinning the connector.

Like I said I had a hard time finding J9 so what I did was put a broomstick on the brake pedal, (which made G7 hot with 12V) and put a safety pin on the wire and stuck it in all the white wires until the brake lights came on. Then I just made a hard connection between those two wires. That's all there is to it.

I tried finding a good diagram of C500 in the archive but this was the best I could do, (I hope it helps)

I still cant figure it out. As fas as ive gotten is when i hit the brake both yellow and red lenses light up. I got so angry the other day that I almost went to the store to buy like 10' of wire to hook directly to the brake switch and then to the brakes. I'm so fed up at this point I may just cut and splice the whole wiring harness cause I cant figure out the easy wasy to do it.

Remove the C500 connector from the side wall.

Look for that white jumper

Cut it

Then based on the diagram above splice together J9 and G7.

Put 500 back on the wall

lol thanks jscott. I have no problem putting the jumper in from J9 to G7 (In the rear harness right not the cars harness?) I can read the numbers and letters on the plug itself so i know what wires are being talked about. =I looked for that white wire from G7 to H8 for about 30 mins and I had no luck at all. I looked quite a ways back in the rear harness(didnt think i would find anything but i looked anyway) and I took the back cover off of C500 and looked through the goo for the white jumper but I couldnt see it. You've said there is only one but I just cant seem to find it. Thanks for your patience with me and for the beer idea

OK so after all that I did it my own way. I was looking at the digram for the 87 fiero and the 85 fiero and it hit me. I cut the white wire on the brake switch near the brake pedal and ran a piece of wire from the switch through the fire wall and to the Lt BLue wire at J9 of C500. I cut the Lt Blue wire and wire nutted it there to the rear lights. Now I can drive my car and the only thing that doesnt work is the PONTIAC lights but I'll figure that out later. Thanks for all the help.
P.S. there is no white wire at all at the C500 connector for the rear harness. So thats what got me fed up but its all good now.

I'm not sure what the deal is with the white jumper. I actually didn't cut mine because I didn't have the turn signals coming on with the brakes. I had no lights at all. The electrical diagrams that I have seem to be missing something as the drawings indicate it should be plug and play.

I glad you got it working right, even if you had to use brute force. I've done that several times; I had my temp sensor stop working, and rather than chase down the break in the wire, I just ran a new one through the firewall.

As long as you are changing the tail lights from notchback lights to fastback lights (which you definitly would be) you need the wiring harness and this thread should help since you get to see the end off all the turnoil I went through

Is there any way around the Rounded Trunk -> Square Trunk? I'm gettin all the Fastback stuff, but the Diablo the parts came off of is still using the square trunk and D Plate thingys What Can I do? And tail lights issue but I'll work on that one

If I understand your question, you want to know if you can stay with the round trunk on the fastback? I have heard of that being done but I wouldn't recommend it. The trunk seal has to match the decklid or you are going to have a lot of leaks. I suppose if you don't mind a leaky trunk you could stay with the round trunk.

Damn This sucks. I'm totally broke so I cant get the D Plate thingys and new Seal I'll try to do that right quick though. The D Plates arent under anything and too hard to change after body is on are they?

Unfortunately, the edges of the D plates are covered by the body clip.
And there's a screw that needs to be tightened, to clamp them down to the edges of the trunk compartment.

Are you sure about this? I've always heard that the pedestals have three sets of holes in them...one is constant, and you move the second stud to one or the other of the remaining two depending upon whether or not you have a fastback or a notchback. I'm not doubting you...just that I've never heard that the 85 spoiler was different, and didn't have the third set of mounting holes...

Unless I can find D Plates and Moulding Really quickly, I really have no other choice. I hope its not TOO leaky for the time being But Whatever. I'll look around for some of those.

The one guy I heard of that did this lived in Arizona and they get about 2 inches of rain per year so he didn't complain. I've never been to UT so I don't know how much rain you get but that setup would be unacceptable in Houston. We get people here from Seattle that complain that it rains too much here.
