I have heard a lot of speculation on this, but no definitive answers.
Is the "under the dash" harness the same for automatic and manual tranny Fieros? Is the clutch interlock wiring already in place and just needs to be possibly "unjumpered" and connected to the clutch pedal switch?
Or is it a completely different harness?
Thanks.

I've stripped many... many.... fieros, and worked on even more.... I have yet to ever see parallel wiring for both in ANY car.
I have seen the odd unused option being wired in (trunk latch for example) though.

I may be wrong but wouldn't there be wiring to the gear selector for the park safety switch that you could use? I know when I swapped in my last 2.8 that the wiring harness for the motor was from an auto so I had to splice the big purple and yellow wires together at the transmission end of the harness and re-pin the C-500 so it would match up and my neutral safety switch would work correctly.

Steve, If you make the change, I would be interested in you auto wiring and interior parts. I have thought about going the other direction and making my 5spd an auto.

I believe they are different harnesses. When I swapped my '88 V-6 auto to getrag last summer, I ran the big purple and yellow wires from the auto trans selector switch all the way back up to the clutch switch. I had to drill a hole in the firewall and splice extra wire to run this length. I could not find any extra wires under the dash to splice in. The only problem with doing it this way is you have to push the clutch in to pop the trunk with the interior switch.
I ran the green and blue to the reverse switch on the getrag. I was then left over with a orange and black that deals with the TCC, so I cut them shorter and left them un-connected.
They are different harnesses. I think you can do like the guys say and "borrow" a few of the wires to change their purpose, but otherwise interior harness is for auto or manual. I swapped harnesses cause I am kinda picky, but it is quite time consuming.

Thanks for all of the replies. Looks like I won't have a clutch interlock. The first manual tranny cars I had (started driving in '73) didn't even have an interlock, and I jumpered out many of the later ones, so this won't be anything new. Not like the car is anywhere near stock, anyway.
Dwayne, the automatic engine harness is already spoken for. I may need to hang on to the console piece. At least for a while. The shifter, cable and shift handle ought to be up for grabs. It'll probably be a few weeks before I start this project. I'll try to post some pics. Don't let me forget that you asked.
What kind of 5 speed stuff have you got? Want to sell any of it?

I was thinking of a future project and would probably put the parts aside until I have time. My five speed parts are still in the car. I wish we had time to get the cars together and just do a swap.
My time may get real limited soon as I may be going to Kuwait for a year and will need to move my wife back home before I go. If that happens I may make a trip to Ed Parks or Llyods when I get back. Can we say "hazardous duty pay financed engine swap?"

Different harness and different steering columns (the column mounted switch is different, plus the manual column has a manual release for the key). You also have to change the wiring on the C500 plug as well for the backup light.
Can be made to work correctly. We have a fellow in our club that has done it and he is not confortable with doing any kind of wiring.

I did this. I finally ran the wires for the clutch switch & reverse lights last week, after 2 years. before, I had jumped the wires at the old auto tranny connector. the clutch switch uses some pretty heavy guage wire for just a switch. yellow & purple is the wire colors.

Good luck!
I did the opposite, manual to auto... I have a large purple and yellow connector sitting loose, it was attached to a clutch switch on the pedal, what use is it?

ok, im at the point now (trying to start my auto with a manual harnass) been through the book, wont start... no click, i am getting voltage at the purple & yellow hanging connector mentioned in previous post. now, is there a way to fool it into thinking Im in park/neutral or do I need to do some major rewiring?
please be an easier way than ripping out the interior and swapping the auto harnass in.

nope, just tie them together/jump them/cross them whatever you wanna call it - that closes the switch, making your car think its in park/neutral but, if you want to run the wire, it will run from the tranny connector, to the clutch pedal, where it will conect to the clutch safety switch.
