I've been looking around the forum for a bit and haven't found anything... so I figure I'll just ask. ...

Has anyone ever made a modification to fit a double DIN stereo in the stock (1.5 DIN) (or even a different) location on the Fiero? If so, where would I find it?

P.s.: I hope this is not a repost :-/

From my recent trip inside the stereo cavity on the fiero, you would have to be a master engineer to fit a double din radio in there. the hole is barely 1.5 din in size so moving the heater controls upwards and shrinking the vents (or completely removing them) would need to be done. I cant see it possible without complete custom work. It certianly is not going to be a simple task.

I concur with timgray. It was a struggle getting all the wires scrunched in behind my single DIN. The stock stereo just fits in there.

Why not install it at an angle from the end of the shift console to the bottom of the heater controls. This would involve a custom partial dash and bezel. Would look similar to Archie's dash.

Might be simple to make a custom fibreglass center section and remove the Fiero center section completely. Then just wrap it in vinyl.

Hmm good points. So it wasn't just me, nobody has attempted such a thing and documented it.

How about if the locations of the HVAC controls and the radio were reversed?

I Saw a picture of one on here once, the person extended the stereo faceplate hole down to the console, and cut out the console skeleton below the radio.

I have a friend who installed a single DIN sony CD with a compatible single DIN cassette deck that was designed for that head unit.
Ended up cutting the faceplate underneath the original radio opening.
It was functional, but it seems like it wasn't really pretty.

Lol, yeah. I hooked everything up this saturday and wanted to push the new radio into the slot, that damn thing didn't go all the way in.

I can imagine that with a double din stereo problems would be much worse with all the cables back there.

I tried to stuff the cables on top of the radio, but cutting the bottom seems like a good idea too!
Gonna try that later!

I installed a double din AM/FM/CD/Tape from an Olds 98 into my 85SE a while back. I had an extra plastic console skeleton to butcher. I had to cut the skeleton to fit the larger radio and the radio sat flat on the base of the console. It was very tight and I probably would not do it again. I no longer have the car thanks to a young lady who pulled out in front of me and I do not have pictures.

Sorry

I'm sorry to hear that. Poor Fiero. Poor you, hopefully you didn't get hurt.

It's kinda what I had planned. Either use an aftermarket Double DIN deck, or use one of the new decks in new GM cars. (They're double DIN, I believe) I like some of the features on them, and they still look like a factory deck. (maybe not factory to a Fiero )
