I have started my engine swap and i thought i would make a thread. I got my spec 2 clutch, new motor and tranny mounts, new rear ball joints and toe links, new 88 flywheel, poly cradle mounts, a 20k mile 2004 3400 sfi engine, and the bolt ons for it. I am also getting new kyb shocks, nrw rubber control arm bushings, some rebuilt calipers and surfaced rotors, and i need to get someone to burn me a chip, oh and btw i will be using a 7730 ecm to run the engine. so far i got the butt jacked up and pulled everything out, disassemble everything in the back, and pressure washed the cradle and tranny. tomorrow i will fix some of the minor rust and paint the cradle. my biggest fear is because i didnt take out the engine (bought it with out an engine) that i am going to have a hard time figuring out the stock wiring harness and what each sensor the wires connected too....hmmmm....i got a few pics i will post soon.
I am a complete novice considering mechanics, only thing i have ever done was change my oil so this is gonna be a task for me. Thanks in advance to anyone that helps me out, and also pluses to every one that may help me out!

Yea i am using the entire 3400 with Al heads and stock injectors.
Here is a couple of pics with the butt in the air.
haha it was sketch but it got the job done, when the engine goes back in i am borrowing some big huge jack stands to make it safer
More soon, Im gonna clean prime and put some paint on the cradle so it wont rust anymore, but it surprisingly is doing great with rust, I figured it would be much worse having been sitting out in Seattle rain for 20 years.

oooo and i am gonna plug Lowes for thier furniture dolly, it has made the job so much easier than it woulda been without it. It was like 20 bucks and i just nailed 2 2x6's long ways to so the whole cradle fits on it, moving it around the drivway is a breeze, and to drop the cradle i just lowered the car till it was just tuching the dolly and then unbolted it jacked the car way up and rolled everything out the wheel well. easy as pie.

I have been running a 3400 SFI up against a 5 speed Getrag for 4 years now and am very happy with the overall package. I wanted to take advantage of the the Sequential Fuel Injection (SFI) and didn't want any alarm issues or expensive aftermaket computer costs. I ended up choosing the use of an OBD 1 1/2 PCM from a 94/95 Camaro/Firebird with 3.4 SFI V6 and 5 speed. $60 for the computer, $60 for GM Firebird Service Manual and your on your way. Awsome power and better fuel economy than the original.

well i would like to do what you guys did but xthumperx has a write up on here and he shows what sensors and wires need to be changed, i am a complete newb so i will need that extra guidance rather than just figuring it all out on my own, i deff like the idea of taking advantage ot the sfi instead of going to mpfi tho

hey tigger i didnt even realize that the camaro was sfi, what kind of fuel economy do you get on a trip? have you ever ran a 1/4 mile or a been on a dyno, not that it makes a diff i am just curious, i am thinking about going that way possibly. did you use the fiero harness and just mod it?
oh, and did you retune the camaro/firebird chip or are you running it stock

Over 40 MPG on the highway (Average over 2000 miles). We drove the car accross the country to the Fiero 20th aniversary in Pontiac Michigan shortly after the install. Sorry no dyno test but I will say that it respones at all rpm's better than I expected.
There are two main connectors underneath of the center console arm rest (C203 and C500). From those connectors forward it is pretty much stock. From there back, I picked up connectors I was missing from the local wrecking yard for next to nothing. You will find everything you need in GM's of the same vintage.
I am running the stock Camaro/Firebird PCM (161963397). Yes, if you look at a 94/95 upper plenum close you see SFI cast into it (Not 93). Another give away are the additional wires leading to the injectors.
The 3400 SFI I am using is out of an 01 Montana.

wow tigger that sounds awesome, what tranny do you have? did you need to use a crank trigger or is there any thing else that i would need besides a few diff sensors and the fiero harness? i am not familiar with that ecm, does it have a removable chip? also do you have any notes on you swap concerning the wiring changes that i could have or buy off you? Thanks
edit: oops i realized you said 5 speed getrag, my bad

ok i have a question, the fuel lines come out towards the rear on the engine. Thumper told me to run lines on the driver side like the duke. instead, would it a bad idea to run the line from its original location around the side and across the rear by the vacuum lines or could that be bad? it seems like it would be easy and then i wouldn't have to swap the position, just add some line.
edit: to clarify

so just to make sure i am understanding, you flipped the stock lines from the fuel tank to exit on the drivers side and then ran a custom line from the fuel injectors (which exit towards the trunk) over the tranny to the flipped fuel lines?

I only have a few pics and I can take a few more if needed, but i flipped my plenums so they sit like the factory Fiero ones, and that let me flip the fuel rail also. Now the lines come out in the stock location and needed no mods except splicing to the factory 88 fuel lines.

It is nice to see guys showing pictures of different 3400 SFI configurations. I do not know why there haven't been more swaps over the years. Its lighter and free flowing because of the aluminum heads. Its compact and perfectly balanced because of the 60 Degree block which also bolts directly to the existing tranny. Up against a stick or auto you get lots of power and torque plus fuel economy from the SFI. There are flashier engines out there but the 3400 SFI's are readily available and cheap to buy.
The PCM from a 93/94 camaro/firebird is compatible with all the existing sensors on the 3400 SFI. (Crank/Cam/DIS/Knock/Map/TPS/IAC etc.) You will need to buy or build a Vats bypass circuit and speed signal convertor. Pictures available on the net. Bought supplies and built for under $10 at the time.

I have decided to use the 7730 ecm and i have a few questions for you guys that have used this computer and a 3100 or 3400 sfi engine. I know that the injector harness thing needs to be rewired with a single wire to each side for the batch firing 7730 ecm. I am not sure what wires and connectors to use, should i take off the 3400 fuel injector connectors and splice them onto the fiero 2.8 injector harness or what. thanks guys
