I am in the process of installing a new clutch kit in my 86 base coupe 2.5 with a 5 sp Isuzu transmission. I didn't have a pilot bushing before, but it was part of the kit so I drove it in. It is about 3/32" deeper than the fly wheel face there. It sounds solid when I hit the driver the last few times. Do I need to remove the flywheel and try to set it deeper in the rear of the crankshaft? I can see space behind the back of the bushing. Any body got one they can look at? I couldn't find any referance to it here or in my Chilton/Haynes books.
Thanks
Joe

I think you need to remove the bushing. The Fiero transmissions never used a pilot bushing at all .
The input shaft of the trans is self supporting and never used a pilot... That is why there was not one there originally...

You don't need the bushing. Just throw it away. All GM transverse mounted engines do not use pilot bushings.

What Dodgerunner said. That clutch package was used on other applications which needed a pilot bushing, thus the inclusion in your package.

I have read somewhere that it wasnt needed. Why does The Fiero Store sell them for the 2.5 with Isuzu 5 spds for $12.00?

I removed it from the engine. That was fun!! The fill the hole with greese way didnt work. I had to clean all of the greese out of it and drill a hole in two spots, then fracture it. The two pieces come out easy after doing that.
Thanks Guys

I guess they sell it because it is in use on some models. I knw my 84 had a pilot bearing, but I didnt put one back on it and nothing's happened.

From what I recall on past discussions about th epilot bearing is that the 84 was the only engine to get them, even though they dont really need them.
