I notice several new Northstar swaps going on now, as well as a renued interest in them in general. I've been buying recall fuel rails, when I can find them, for my ITB injection systems, and In the process I've discovered there are a couple different rail designs. as pictured from left to right, they are GM # 12583145 which has it's feed and return line on the left (forward) side of the engine and the lines both point upwards. you'll need to remove or modify the lift bracket that bolts to the water log in order to use this one. the middle rail is GM# 12583147 and it's lines point downward at ~ 45* angle on the right side of the engine. the rail on the right has straight lines and they are on the right side of the engine also. it's part # is 12583148. one design may work better than the others for your particular needs. just thought I'd pass the info along.

so that rail has the lines on the left (front) side, but the ends are straight it appears?
BTW: my local GM dealer is great when they can see a part in the book, but not so good at finding more illusive parts like "service" parts made for GM shop use. what I would like to find, is a quick connect fitting to use on the large (inlet) side of the rail. of course the parts guy looks in the book and says "you have to buy the whole hose assy", but I can't believe you can't get a "repair kit" off some kind to obtain just the fitting that could be spliced onto the Fiero (rubber) fuel line. I have a source (Suzuki) for the small (return) line, but if you could get me a number for an inlet (large) line quick connect I would be eternally grateful

Correct on the rail. Back in the day when I worked for a mopar dealer we had a service kit for a fuel filter on a FWD car. I think it was a E body. Maybe a K car. Anyway the service kit came with some hose, clamps, and a hand full of disconnects. We only used two. So I had a lot over time. I have one or two left. I would talked to an old mopar guy. He would tell you the part #

You can get those at CarQuest. They're called, oddly enough, "Fuel Line Repair Fittings" and they're usually on the HELP! rack.

I've got both if you want them. They were spendy little buggers - about $13 ea as I recall. I'm going to AN fittings, so I don't need them anymore.
BTW, I'll throw this out there - if anyone has a 97 "straight" fuel rail, I've got a 95-96 "curved down" fuel rail that I'm looking to trade.

If I do the ITB setup I will try and use an earlier metal fuel rail. As far as I know there is no recall on the 2000+ northstars plastic fuel rail.
Thanks for the part number Russ, will pick up that rail when the time comes.
My plastic fuel rail. I modified it by cutting the metal lines and then using compression fittings. This way I could hook right into the factory rubber fuel lines.
This is what it looked like before I modified it. You can see the plastic lines under the TB

I went to Carquest today. they didn't have anything on the "help" rack, but they did have one in the back corner of the store that's made by Dorman. $22.00 with my shop discount. ouch. glad I only need one. it comes with a chunk of plastic line on it, a coupler, and tool, used to attach to the cars rubber fuel line, but I'll be throwing those parts away anywho, as all I need is the coupler itself.

So, you must be the person that sniped the Aurora fuel rail I was bidding on.
It's a cool project, Russ...
Bob
was it you that got the compleat intake assy with metal rail on it today? I was willing to pay the opening price of 75 for it, but the 55 freight seemed a bit high. I was outbid at 76

Where are all the fuel rails coming from? I'm looking for a 12583148 for a 97 Deville engine and can't find one, except for at the dealer, who wants to rob me of $230.00 for it! OUCH! I don't expect it for cheap, but $230 is too much. Any suggestions anybody?

I brought my fiero in and explained that without the metal rail, it would burn to the ground. They were happy to hand me a stainless rail under the recall. Of course, they got probably got 2 hours labor for doing nothing as well...
I had to bring the VIN of the original car the engine came from though.
Dealer told me because the car the engine was from was listed as totaled I would have to buy the kit. So if anybody has a 97 rail for sale (cheap) let me know.

This is exactly my problem. A friend who runs a private shop tried to get one out of the dealer, but the dealer had just got his hand slapped for doing such things under "warrenty", so I have to pay the $230.00. Florida has more than nice weather - nice dealers that treat Ryan nice too!

I was there when the dealer looked up the VIN and apparently it wasn't salvaged or totaled (not sure about why not)... Maybe run to a junkyard and get some N* VINs and run a carfax on them. You might find one that blew a headgasket and was scrapped or something. Probably getting a VIN that doesn't register as "totaled" would be the important key here.
The rails can be purchased for about 150 though. Try rockauto or gmpartsdirect.

That sand rail engine I resealed last summer had a rail that was listed as bad in the recall. I asked my boss if we could do the rail under the recall. He said no way. I ran the GM VIS ( GM Vehicle Inquiry System) and the recall was listed as OPEN on the VIS. I looked to see if the title was branded or if it had any warranty blocks. None came up. I asked again and they still said NO WAY!!!!!! I got the hint and dropped it.
I work at a Mopar dealer that had wrecking yards bringing in heater cores from wrecks. The dealer would give them a new core and charge Mopar to R&R it. Then the Wrecking yard would sell the new part. I would have to guess that is why dealers can't do recall with out the actual car. Tooooooooo much scamming

http://www.newgmparts.com/p...ex.cfm?siteid=213815 Rail kit # 12583148 for my 97 Deville engine: $114.66 + shipping = $126.13 About what I thought it should be, so I'll give them a try. Others on a Camaro/Firebird forum have good things to say about them too.

I got a metal rail identical to the middle one in the opening photograph. It was attached to an intake manifold & throttle boby assembly being sold on eBay. Also got 8 extra injectors. I believe the total price with shipping was around $50 or $60. Now I have an extra intake manifold, and TWO '95 throttle bodies I'll unload later.

Does anyone know who manufactures those rails for GM? I've got a friend that works for a major OEM plumbling company. I thought If I knew who made the originals, he might be able to get the "artwork" to reproduce a custom set.

I saw 5 on the wall today when I picked up mine. I need it to run my car on boost.
Deep snow at his shop and I stood around for about 20 minutes with now one in sight.

As an alternative, you can get some AN-6 steel weld on nuts (p/n 967106) for $3.82 a piece from Earl's (www.anplumbing.com for example), drill them to the fuel rail line size, and braze (or silver solder, or weld) them on. I did this on my 3.4 DOHC rail to get AN -6 on the send and return. It was very easy to drill the fittings out to 5/16 (return line tubing size) and 3/8 (feed line tubing size) on my drill press. You could do it with a hand drill and vice too. I drilled them to about 1/2" so the filler rod would wick and form a nice long solid bond. My friend Dan brazed them on in a few minutes.

Yippee!!! I got a metal rail on from Ebay for $4.99 + $12 shipping. It is the one in the center of the opening photo, when it was the right side one I wanted. I will cut the bends off anyway and braze on JIC tapered fittings to use with the JIC ended fuel lines I already made up for the plastic rail arrangement. The vendor had it listed on Ebay by part number not by description, and he did not know what it was for.....I lucked out and recognized the picture.

Dang!!! what a score. I thought I'd gotten all the good deals on the rails from E-bay already . Actually it's not uncomon to find them in wreaking yards either. after all, they were suposed to be installed on all the older N* to replace the plastic rails, hence the name "recall fuel rail" .

I loaned out my taps and block guide from my Norm's insert kit and gave out 1 insert for my rail. I guess it cost me one of Norm's inserts that I had left over. I paid for 20 and got 21. That would be almost free
