This is AWESOME

I think I'm about to aquire a complete V6 w/ 5spd and exhaust system for a nice price! I have a few quick questions.

-->My current set up is '84 Duke:

-How are the coolant lines different?
-Do I need a new ECM from a V6?
-How heavy is the engine? ...engine/tranny assembly (I need to lift it into a pick-up truck)

I may have more questions, but I'm really excited about this. I know, it's not a V8 or 3800 or VR6, but it's fun and a good price improvement.
And I'm sort-of on a deadline

Ciao!
Michael

Well, first of all, putting it into an '84 is going to be significantly harder that any other year. There are brackets on the engine compartment that the later years have that the '84 does not, also, the main vehicle wiring harness is different (C500 most noticeably is on the driver's side on '84s and the pass on all later years).

This is not to say that it can't be done, but it will involve customizing the wiring harness and fabricating several brackets.

Yes, you will need the ECM from the 2.8, also the tachometer (really all the gauges, to keep the same font) if you want/need the tach to read correctly. Also, don't forget the fuel pump and lines/filter assembly, and the air filter.

It's possible to modify the coolant lines to work, but it's been something like ten years since I've done that particular job, and I can't really remember what I did. I know I didn't have to so any major fabrication, so it should be fairly obvious what needs to be done, should you decide to do it.

Fully dressed, I would guess the 2.8/5-Spd combo to weigh 500-600 lbs. If you split the trans off and took all the accessories off, two big guys could pick the engine up, but it would be a strain. No offense, but I don't think you qualify as a "big guy" from meeting you at the F.I.E.R.O. meet last weekend.

Oh, and the '84 coupe rear facia only has one cut out for the tailpipes, so you'll need to either cut it out, or replace the bumper.

EDIT:

Oh, and shifter/throttle cables will be different.

Not sure on the coolant lines but don't think they would be a problem.
Yes the ecm's are different.
Depends, How many friends you got. Four guys with a little muscle could do it.
I've done the v6 block with crank by myself but with heads and intake it's gets to be to much for one person safely...

Awesome. Thanks guys. It is a bit more work than I was thinking, but so far it looks doable. Worst case I keep my 2.5 until I can do the modifications, but seeing as I'm almost about ready to take my engine out, I'll try to do it now.

Blacktree, thanks for that great link!

There will be a build thread if it goes through!

I got it! Here's a pic. It looks pathetic, but it will be beautiful.
