My father has a 87 GT and I was wondering if the subwoofer was an option? What can I tell my father to look for to see? Does the head unit have a EQ?

Yes the sub-woofer was an option. The most obvious thing to look for is a volume sider located in the front of the dome light housing.
Second is simply put your hand under the right side of the dash. If you feel a big hole then the sub isn't or wasn't there.

I was trying to figure out an easy way to tell my father to look. I explained it to him...........hopefully it has one. That will save me 40 bucks.

My father doesn't think has it. It does have the EQ. It is a 86 GT. What are some other ways that I can check to see if it has a sub? I am trying to keep from taking a road trip unless it has one.

the slider in the front of the overhead console with the map lights is the easyest way to tell .

The slider knob says Performance sound over it. The actual sub is placed directly above the passenger side foot pad. There should be a box with it in. It might be missing the actual sub though, many people take them out because the go bad quickly. If you do need one I stongly suggest getting one that will fit. Three hours with a drill and screws from a random drawer in the tool cabnit isn't worth saving a couple bucks. Should have gotten this: http://www.rodneydickman.com/retail_new.html

At the end of the day, the irony is that there is nothing "sub" about the factory "sub". There are woofers, and there are subwoofers. I'm going nowhere with this, I know, I just sorta wonder why people bother with those little things..

You've never heard the Tang Band subwoofer in the factory enclosure. The sound inside the Fiero is actually quite impressive, mine goes louder than I ever feel necessary to crank it.

How much room is behind the rear? I see that people have been cutting out the rear carpet. Is there anything behind it? I am a little nervous about cutting on something without knowing whats behind it. Is there anyone who has pics of the process?
