I am looking for the 3.32 gears and a number of transmission places that I've called say they have cores but they need to know the tooth count in order to know which transmission they are looking at.
Does anyone know what the tooth count on the final drive and 4th gear sets are on the 3.32 tranny?

I can help you out when I get home this evening. However, I have been looking into manufacturing gear sets to create more Econo trans. Could you give me a little more info. on what you're trying to accomplish?
One of the stumbling blocks I ran into was trying to match up the gear shafts to the differential gear. If you're trying to get the tall 4th gear, for the 84 style trans the 3rd and 4th gear sets slide off the shafts and can be exchanged for similar gears. The output shaft, however splines to the differential, and if that gear set isn't correct (ie. if it's out of some other 4 speed) you won't get the taller ratio for the end drive.
Also, the 85 and newer 4 speeds had one piece output shafts, so the whole shaft and gear set have to be replaced to change the gearing.

I read in another thread about someone changing out the final drive gear set in their M17 with the 3.32 from the MY8. I saw the thread where doing the 3rd and 4th gear sets would not work because the shafts are different.
If I read your post correct, you are saying that the final drive gears out of the MY8 will not mate to the differential in the M17? If so, then would it work if I used the MY8 differential with the MY8 final drive gear set on the M17 shaft and case?

yes, it will. Have you found a my8 trans? If not, you might have better luck looking for the 80 citation/ pheonix trans. They too have the 3.32 final drive, however they also have the .81 4th gear like the m17. So you will be turning a little higher rpms but it is still much better gearing for the 3800.

Do all of the 80 citation/pheonix's have the 3.32 final drive? If so, I think I will go that route.

I don't have the tooth counts for the 3.32 final. I did just get the counts for the 3.65 as of last night. At least it might give you an idea of where to start...
Hope it helps some. I have pics of the open case also if you want them. I may have an econo tranny but won't know for sure til this weekend is over. If I do I will go over everything needed to make the change. There is alot of speculation but I have yet to see someone pull it off, and document it. There is always a way though.

Thanks for those tooth counts. I just got a call from a junk yard that I had called earlier. I am buying a 80 citation Muncie for $185 shipped. I should have it by next weekend. When I get the time to tear it apart, I'll post the tooth counts for anyone else that may look for it. It was a lot easier to get the whole transmission than it was looking for the gear sets.
According to my research, all of the 80-81 Citations had the 3.32 final drive gear set. They are relatively cheap right now. There are a number on car-parts.com for under $100. Since it is under 100#, you can have UPS ship it for $85. I was quoted by a transmission specialty shop that said it would be $200 if they could find the gear set. Luckily, they didn't find it so I am getting the whole transmission instead.

Very nice. Keep us posted on how the swap goes. Good luck to you.
I gave a call to my parts guy today and he is 95% sure he has a fiero econo for me. I'll know for sure in about an hour. If that doesn't work out I will check the last parts car this weekend to see if there is one there. One way or another I will find one.

I figure if the difference is 2 mpg, then I will save 1 gallon every 2 weeks. That will be $104 in one year so this will pay for itself in a little less than 2 years.
I was thinking about looking for the .73 4th gear too but my main thing was just keeping the rpm below 3,000 rpms at 80. For some reason, just about every car that I have had start to use a lot more gas when you go over that 3000 rpm thresh hold. I don't think I'll be able to find the 3rd and 4th gear set out of a MY8. I have been looking for two months now with no luck. Too bad they did not come on the 80 Citation tranny. It is funny that it is easier and cheaper to buy the whole transmission.
Just a word of warning for anyone else that is considering this swap. I called 4 junkyards about the Citation trannies. 2 of them had them on the books but they were crushed. One wanted $425 in shipping for it so I said good bye and one had it for a good price and good shipping cost. Be aware that these trannies are not going to be as easy to get for too long.

Just a small update. I got my 80 Citation transmission today. I put it in reverse, turned the input shaft and counted the rotations that it took to turn it 360 deg. It verified that it is indeed a 3.32 final drive.
It will be a few weeks before I pull my Fiero 4 spd and crack open the case to swap the gears but from other posts that I have read, they should work just fine. Soon I will be able to cruise at 80 mph at slightly under 3,000 rpms.
Not to change the subject on you but how would I tell the difference between the MY8 and M17? Whats the #'s for each if anyone knows?
One way you can tell without opening the case is to put it in reverse gear, then turn the input shaft by hand and count how many times it takes to turn the differential 1 time. If it is a M17 then it will take ~12 1/2 turns. If it is a MY8 or 3.32 final drive equivolent, then the differential will turn ~11 1/2 times. I picked reverse because it is easy to find on these 4 speed transmissions. It is the only gear that does not have a sister gear on the other side. 1st has 2nd on the other side of it and 3rd has 4th. Reverse is all alone and unmistakeable.

When you open it up can you count and post the tooth counts for the ring and pinion gears? I have found a couple places that say then have the finals out of 84 fiero transmissions but I need the counts to verify they have an econo. Congrats on finding a 3.32 trans. Hope your swap goes well.
