As the title states I am looking for photos of a Double DIN radio in a Fiero. I am toying with the idea of putting a radio with Sat Nav, Blue Tooth and Ipod interface in my Fiero. So if anyone has photos of one please post them. Also tips on cutting the radio surround etc would be helpful.

Thanks!!!

This one was on eBay a while back. I currently have the DD Vibe deck but am watching for a decent deal to something like the AVIC z2 I have in the truck.

Just trim out the plastic under the AC control then trim the bezel to fit.

Its just like the Vibe install. See https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/095495.html & https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/094799.html

The carbon fiber is just the sticky overlay. Would be nice if someone would make replacememnt bezels like the carbon fiber headliners.

The Fiero store sells the carbon fiber dash overlays for $250. They have them in several different colors. Look at their interior section on their web page www.fierostore.com .

Those double dins look great. I only wish I could do it with having to change out my the bezel overlay. I like the factory dot matrix. I am assuming after the plastic below the heater controls is trimmed the piece looks hacked and you have to install an overlay?

Then secret is in the trimming ,to enlarge the opening. Cuts should only be made from the front towards the back side. No jagged edges that way. Fine toothed saw bladed jig saw. You will need an assistant to assist you holding the bezel straight and to stop bending. Scribe a line deep and do not touch the line while trimming. The final cut only with a good new sharp single cut mill bastard file. Just dress it to the scribed line. Fine toothed rat tail file on the two upper corners. Go slow.

I have a DD radio that arrived yesterday.Very much like Chane's other radio. In his other thread. I have a harness connector that should be here tomorrow. If the radio tests out good, I'll be installing it Sunday afternoon. I'll post a few pictures for you.

trimming the bezel is no problem at all. its the opening that the radio slides into. how is that made to fit a DD?

So you have to trim the top of the radio opening to fit the DD. How much?

This is the cleanest installation of a DD I have seen. As I remember you have the mods to the radio opening done by a company on the web. I would do exactly the same thing if I could get the original dot matrix pattern back.

In "Curlrup's " thread it says 1/4" at the top. I think some of the frame work part that the radio slides into has to be "fixed" before this will work. The instructions were just a little vague.

Quote "Now for install. You need to remove your bezel on the front of your console, also pull the HVAC controls and let them hang. You need to trim the opening larger by about a 1/4 inch. Here is what you need to remove from the black plastic, and the metal shroud that goes over the plastic. I used a fiberglass cut off wheel on a cordless Dremel. The bar that runs under the HVAC contols I removed completely, you also need to get that pesky braket out of the back of the radio opening. " End Quote

If my radio will play, I'll try to clear some of this up. Just waiting on the connector.

To clarify I had to trim out everything in this illustration that is green. Everything in this illustration is black ABS plastic except for the upper corners of the radio opening there I had to trim out the metal framework that slides over the plastic frame, then trim out the plastic frame under the metal I just notched out about a 1/4 inch square piece in each corner.

The bezel you just trim the top of the radio opening to the rib on the back as pictured here.

Thats all just a 1/4 inch off the top.

I do.

https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/088356.html

I compiled this list last year by digging through the archives. I see an update is in order. (to include all the double DIN pics that are new/I've missed)

This radio would not work in my Fiero. From a Monsoon. It ate my Roy Orbison CD, and wouldn't give it back. After I opened it up to retreive, I used a BFH before hitting the trash can.

Just how tight of a fit is it once the trimming is done?

It is tight if you hacked any more out you would not have center console.

I'm watching E-Bay for a good Vibe/Matrix CD radio. The one I got from the Monsoon would not work. I dont want to get one that the gray is missing from the buttons. I'll be on this again as soon as X-Mas is over unless I find a steal on E-Bay.

Be real careful with the Delco/GM double DIN radios. Most made after 2002 won't work in a Fiero because they have to tie into the CAN bus and download the car's VIN.

I'm told that the Vibe/Matrix will work because they are dumbed down to work in what is essentially a Toyota. Might also try one from an Aveo as it's probably also dumbed down to work in what is essentially a Daewoo car.

I have 9 grandchildren. I can wait till after X-Mas. My tags are going to expire on New Years day. I dont think I am gonna renew till about March or so. Gonna drop the insurance also till next spring also. She can sit in the garage all winter with a full tank of gas and some Stabil poured in.

I know it's off-topic, but I like those oddments-trays each side of the gear lever shown in the pic above. Sensible alternative to ashtrays, for those of us who don't smoke. I presume they fit into the ashtray slots. Who makes them? Can anyone tell me where to find them?

While I was redoing my interior, I broke one of my ash tray lids. I didn't feel like spending any money fixing something that I'd never use, so I bought those trays in the auto section at Target (Walmart competitor). I trimmed them to fit a bit snugger around the shift boot. Then I painted them with flat black vinyl paint. Lastly, I velcro'ed them to the shift bezel so that I could remove them to get at the mounting screws. I left the ash trays and covers un-installed. To complete the deletion of the "Smoker's option package", I replaced the cigarette lighter with a covered power outlet.

There was one in my "ultimate double DIN thread". I think the pictures might be dead now. The user that made the thread was banned. Not sure how to find these pictures again. Either someone might know how to contact the original poster, or maybe the internet archive might help.

Guys, when it comes to cutting by hand there is absolutely no way I can do it without it looking cobbed up and crooked. Has anyone tried chucking up in a milling machine to make the cut?

I have access to every CNC mill, Bridgeport mill known to man and I still just used a cut off wheel in a cordless Dremel to do all of this work. I think mine came out fine. I even did a lot of the console cutting via flashlight, since it was dark out. It can be done.

I did mine with straight tin snips and the smoothed the cuts with a file. I also used the file to bevel the edges of the cut out. It's not that difficult once you get over the fear that you might "wreck" your bezel.

If you want to make a straight cut in the bezel, put a piece of masking tape (or painter tape) across the line where you want to cut. Use that as a guide. I couldn't cut a straight line by sight if my life depended on it but I've cut many a straight line using the masking tape method. Even talented people use that.

I used the rib on the back of the bezel as my guide for the cut off wheel as pictured above you can see I shaved teh rib down but that top edge of the opening is cut right up to the rib.

Yes. Thats my issue. This is on an 88 and my bezel is in good shape. Just don't know if I can run the risk with my feeble hands.

IF, I was to do it. Can someone tell me again how tough it is to get a DD mounted? Is it really tight?

You could always pick up another bezel to try your skills on:

Curlrup has a good write up on what you need to do to fit in a double din. You do have to do a fair amount of cutting on the center console skeleton.
