You can split the case. GM never sold any internal parts so all you can do is look at the internals. A handful of Fiero people have put these in. From what I have heard nothing interchanges. You need to make all your own brackets etc.

The 284 mounting to the cradle is not a difficult issue, especially on an '88 cradle with '88 mounting brackets. The axles must be modified, joining the outside part of the Fiero axle with the inside part of the original 284 axle (Took me less than an hour to do both sides.) You perform this marraige at the CV joint. You must use the 284 slave cylinder and clutch pack (Clutch disk, Pressure Plate & T.O. bearing for the 284 ('91 -'92 Z34 Lumina for example.) I've used both a Zoom product from AutoZone for less than $200 and a SPEC +3 setup for a little over $200. Use a flywheel from an '88 V6 Fiero or one from a Z34 vehicle (Or a third party replacement.) The real obstacle is setting up the shift linkage. The 284 was setup for a FWD vehicle and the Fiero 282 is a mid-engine configuration. Some re-engineering is necessary. By the way, the Dickman FWD 282 conversion kit that works beautifully on the FWD 282 Getrag, will not work with the Getrag 284.
American Custom Engineering (ACE) included this modification in their 3.4DOHC/Getrag 284 conversion kit (No longer available.) And, PFF member 308Fiero in Ottawa had a thread describing his solution.
If anyone out there has access to the ACE method, or any other methods for that matter, I'd love to see how they did it.
GM never supported the rebuilding of Getrag 284's, because it took an especially powerful machine press which most shops did not have and with the typical, smaller shop press, it was (According to GM) a very dangerous undertaking.

Excuse me. The Ottawa member is Fiero308, not 308Fiero. He was kind enough to invite me to his home and show me his work (During a televised hockey match, no less) a few years back.

I had a nice 284 ..but sold it due to the lack of support ..didn't know it took a high powered press to service it, Rick ...still it is a better geared trans for the DOHC than the 282 I'm sure

Just because you have destroyed the rest of the remaining 4 speed transmissions with your engine, does NOT mean you have the right to destroy the last of the 284 Getrags!!! LEAVE SOME FOR US!!!

Thanks for the info though. I appreciate you guys posting it. I ended up deciding to go for one of those Euro Getrags off of E-Bay, harvesting parts out of it and rebuilding what I already had.
