I've looked at a lot of sound builds/threads and I haven't really found a way to do this without a custom dash.

I am trying to build a decent sound system on a budget. Here is what I have to work with.

As many 6x8, 6x9, 5", 3.5", 4x6, and 8" Pioneer subs/speakers as I want - I know a guy that works for Pioneer and he can give out so many a year for free.
A plate for TLG Auto to install an 8" sub into my center console. Already have a Pioneer sub picked out, but I do NOT have an amp.
VR3 head unit with LCD screen installed onto passenger side dash.
And 100 dollars to spend on various components and speakers if needed.

I am trying to figure out how to make use of the 6x8 or 6x9 speakers without doing a custom dash or extensive modifications. I do not care about looking stock.

Right now I have 2 older paper cone Pioneer 4x6's in the pillars, and 2 Boss 4x10 in the dash. Sound quality is very bad, even using 320 MP3's and HD radio. I have no sub installed at the moment either. I am NOT looking to compete in any sound contests...I just want full and clear sound.

Any ideas on a good setup with what I have to work with?
Keep in mind those are the only sizes of speakers and subs I can get for free.

The basic question I have is this. How can I replace those stupid Boss dash speakers with something that sounds better? Is there any way to mount one of those 6x8's or 6x9's in there or behind the seats so I have some better "big" speakers?

There is a way to fit 6x9's in the dash, They have to be installed from underneath. There are threads on the forum somewhere. Could build some door pods with the 5" for some mid range imaging, stick with new 4x6's in the rear pillars, they are right next to your ear so you can fade them out till the dont distort. Most your clarity will come from tuning each channel so the speakers distort with the volume up. If you can build sealed enlosures behind each speaker it makes a big differanc in sound quality to.

Thanks, Mike. Seems like you have a solution to every one of my little problems on here. haha. After reading that thread, I think I can pull this off with 6x9's in the dash. What a stupid idea to use 4x10's initially. They're just bad speakers.

Ya, I dont know whos idea it was to make that drastic of an oval speaker..they sound terrible IMO....would rather have seen a pair of 3" per side or something.

No doubt. My pillar speakers sound good since they're so close to your ears you can fade them down to cut down distortion, but those dash speakers sound like crap no matter what.

Sounds like you found the solution that you were looking for so this thread may be redundant but nevertheless for the others looking for more sound, I found this thread interesting, fierosound always has some very innovative thinking.

Oh yeah, I'll whole heartedly agree, 4 x 10 speakers, what were they thinking?

You also have another alternative for the 8" subwoofer. Stealthy and factory looking.

There was at least 1 guy that sells a "turnkey" version of that subwoofer. All you had to do is provide the speaker and you're ready to go.

If anybody can get this link to work, it might show good info. Doesn't work on my PC:

And there is a way to mount a 10" sub in that location as well. I just couldn't find much info on it.

If you concerned with size. Alpine sells gorgeous small digital amplifiers Bang & Olufsen ICE technology.
They come in a PDX-5 version, which can drive 4 speakers and 1 sub out of one unit:

These units have quick disconnects if you need mobility, or for cleaning the car.

Alpine has the PDX in stackable versions with 4-channels, 2-channels, 1000w subwoofer channel.
(look identical to the above)

Eclipse licensed the same technology from Bang & Olufsen and make their versions:

Their design allows for side by side flush mounting for a clean look.

If you consider the savings in size, battery draw, heat, all-in-one design, sound quality, Wattage, they're actually a great price.

I'm not sure if Pioneer makes a small amp that does it all as well, but if you can't get a hookup for amps, the point is moot anyways.

Hope this helps.

If you want less effort, you can always mount the Double DIN in the factory location, like so:
