"stuff" due to this being a family friendly site...

Anyway, a friend of mine had a 86 SE 2M4 Fiero in storage for about 6 years. He bought it about 1 year before he was shipped off to Japan (he's military also). He was in the beginning of a 3400 swap and was doing some other "interesting" upgrades as well. The 3400 never went in it, but wires got changed.
He decided to store it for when he got back and sealed it up well. Three years passed and he got orders to Nellis. The Fiero stayed in Phoenix for 3 more years till he decided he didn't want anything more to do with it (he spent his time too close to Japanese cars). He drove down to Phoenix from Nevada and picked up the Fiero and dropped it off at my house with the title. It is mine now.
It is in a very sad shape with most of it in pieces. I spent the past 2 days going over it and taking inventory to decide if it is worth putting back on the road. Ideally, I would like to build it up for my wife to drive, as she does not have one she can drive (mine has fixed seat position and she can't reach the pedals, which may be a good thing as mine is nothing near stock and she is used to underpowered cars ). It is very clean (I mean, no rust or damage), but was very dirty from the storage (dirt floor barn with hay stacked around it). I spent 5 hours cleaning the outside to look it over and about 6 hours removing the interior and cleaning it.

I pulled this out. it was under a large amount of insulation back on the inside of the firewall. the insulation looks stock, but I have never seen this in a fiero (this would be the 8th fiero I have owned).

You can see where it was at, but under 2 layers of the cotton factory insulation:

was it stock? it felt like tar paper and was a little oily. The PO knows nothing about it.
did it serve any purpose? Mine is all Dynomat, but never had that. None of the ones I had (that I have pulled the interior out of) had that.

I am planning on keeping up with this thread as I decide what I am going to do with this Fiero.

anyway, thanks.

I would say no I just had my interior completely out and all it used was the grey cotton like stuff glued to the carpet pieces. That looks like a aftermarket sound deadener.

Ditto on the sound deadener. Mine was just the cotton looking stuff too.

Because you are in Tucson, I suspect that there was some effort to kill heat transfer from the engine so the AC would not have to work so hard....maybe a dealer option.....it looks too good to be home made.

I hadn't thought of a dealer option. That could be. The interior had about twice the cotton based insulation of any Fiero I have ever taken apart. It was very professionally done. It wrapped from the little ledge under the rear windows and down to the lowest seam line on the firewall.
I bet the car (when it was running) was one of the quietest Fiero's out there. It had the basic sound system, and that may have been enough with all the added insulation.

My current one was (and still is) an AZ car. It has AC (had... I never connected the lines from the 3800 to the chassis after the engine swap, but everything else is there). It never had that, but it is one model year older. It may have been a dealer option that started with the 86 model year.

Thanks all.

Been busy rebuilding the Suspension and Brakes.

I have bought all new calipers and rotors for all four. All new suspension components, with the exception of control arms.

The calipers and Rotor Hats have been coated with Caliper paint to minimize the eventual rusting.

I accidentally got a little on the rotor surface, but that will get removed...

The control arms have been disassembled and sand blasted. Then they got a coat of primer and Sail Blue gloss coat (the wife's favorite color is blue). I am in the middle of re-assembling them.

The wife wants to help put the car together, so I will be doing mostly recondition work till she gets back from her deployment.
