well i have decided to post my build to gain some feedback as to what i am doing and to show the progress of my build. i enjoy reading other posts similar to this so please, any comments are welcome as long as they are presented with taste.. i started off with an 87 gt fastback, a southern car with a georgia salvage title. i had it registered in pa and decided to do some custom work..
then i became ambitious an bought a set of side skirts. the only real dislike for the stock fiero body is that there are to may lines going on, the 2 piece ground effects, the belt line molding and then the huge drip rail on top, what is decided to do was to mold these one piece skirts in, and shave the body lines off. this was not an easy task. i die grinded the sharp body line off to give the car more of a rounded effect. i then filled the gap with spray foam. once it dried, i cut it away and then filled with fiber glass resin jelly and matting. once that was dry, ground down and filled with putty and smoothed out until the new body line curve was intact.
although not complete it is coming along nice then i wanted to do something different with the hood. i had an alum hood from a turbo 2 rx7 lying around that was dented in the front so i decided to split it and mold it into the hood. it is functional and is a two piece scoop. i eliminated the body lines in the hood and i will paint the hood the color of the car and then the scoop insert a different color. this matches up nice with the f355 nose.
i then eliminated the spoiler and i am having a custom rear bumper made to match the front 355 nose. i plan on using bullitt rims from a 2001 mustang gt and adding rx7 turbo 2 mirror to the car. paint color is still up in the air. thanks for looking spence

thanks for the response, the nose was bought second hand from florida but fiero warehouse sales them...i too always wanted to see what the body lines would look like gone, i am just about done with that.. more pics to follow

ok, well i have pretty much all of the ugly work done, i finally had the car primed and now i can go over the car with icing where its a little low and where there are sand scratches. i will then sand that out with a large paint stick and 180grit board paper. once that it done, ill prime the car again, and wet sand it out. here are some pics of how its going now. note, i will not be using any type of wing and i even molded the rockers in along the door jams for a cleaner stock look.

after the first coat of primer laid out, i had a clean canvas to start over with, i went over the car and marked all the low spots and filled with icing, as you will see there were alot of spots hidden that couldnt be seen, just felt.
after reading some good posts, chop top and custom interior packages might be in the works

flush mount headlights are on there way now, after seeing some pictures with car in primer, i think the car would look good with a set of flush mounts in it, i will probably do a complete hid swap on the lights even though the kit im getting has a set. i might also modify the kit to eliminate the front portion of the hood to give the lights a little longer look

well after about 3 times of adding icing and sanding, i am down to what i feel will be the last time. from here on out i will use these sanding blocks called dyna blocks. they work great for smoothing out long flat panels so there are no waves. only about 3 hours of work left and back to primer

here is the pics with the quarter glass setting in there, after paying 40 bucks for 180grit rolled sandpaper for use with those durablocks. those durablocks are great for smoothing out large panels. the car is ready for primer now, last night i spent another 4 hours sanding and filling. i believe we are in business now. by wensday i will have the car completely in primer and blocked out

here are the wheels, they are 15in american racing with new cooper cobra tires. the bolt pattern is 5 x 4.75 so i had wheel adapters made off of a company i found on ebay

i only have 360 in the wheels, tires and adapters. i have got the tires off of an rx7 that my buddy wrecked on the way home from getting the tires on. i kept them in storage for 4 years, i bought the wheels from a pawn shop for 200 bucks and i have 160 for the 4 adapters shipped. they need polished but are flawless

well finally got another coat of primer on it, i feel really good about it as a whole, there is one small dent i missed on drivers side door and few spots for just a small touch of icing, now i will finish aligning the front bumper cover and start looking for a set of flush mount side marker lights, im thinking of something from a bmw and i am going to mount them behind the front wheels. i am still waiting on my rear bumper to be finished,

while at work last night, i really pondered the front bumper leaning down on the drivers side, i know the car was wrecked in that corner. i am not sure if this is a body issue or something in the suspension. im leaning toward the body i think. i might have to shim the left corner up, this will cause some possible issues with the side skirts but i will have to unhook the front bumper cover from the inside because i fiberglassed the mounting screws in but they wont be hard to get out,, but i wll start by shimming in the middle of the left fender, getting larger near the front, if that doesnt work i will reweld that front up to to level out. i will use a "hopefully" straight board with my 4 foot level on it. and go from the front corner to the other. i wish i would have checked this earlier but its no big deal. i will put it on the rack, peal the wheels and inner fenders out and then it will be easy...but base case scenerio, the floor is just unlevel. with the car parked in different places it looks straight. i did rip the right side screws out so maybe thats the issue

hopefully my real paint skills are better than that on the computer, but i am looking for a black top, with od green, i want to break it up with a nice white and black stripe, the rear panel and the front piece of the scoop will probably be black too. if any of you photo shop guru's are out there, please help me out with an image. thanks
right on wink, that looks cool...thanks what do you guys think of that, i am thinking of a white and black stripe that starts out small on the door and works it way around the back how about pink can you do that too or explain how u did this thanks again spence

bad news, some cracking occured along the body line where i didnt drill holes on the drivers side, im gonna have to do a little work to get it back up to par,, ill post pics tomorrow

at first glance, your observation is correct, however imagine that the spare tire well is gone, the air that travels thru the radiator is hot. the air that goes thru the scoop is cold, hot air rises, cold air drops, since there will be less resistance for the air as is travels thru the scoop then that traveling thru the radiator, there will be a greater volume of cold air rushing thru pushing hot air down under the car, this is almost the effect of a front spoiler and could aid in keeping the front end down if i ever go fast enough for it to matter. at idle it will help the fan draw in cold air from on top thanks spence

Uhmmm...I think this is backwards. Forcing air under the car lifts it up. A spoiler keeps the air from getting under the car in the first place. Not that it will really matter at "normal" driving speeds though.

Concerning the crack in the filler, I want to make sure you realize that the upper part/clip is fiberglass impregnated while the small lower part isn't. So the lower part is much more flexible. Clearly you have more experience in bodywork than me, but I want to make sure you realize that. Along the same note, what sort of filler do you use? I assume it has to be especially flexible filler because of the flexible body, but I really don't know.

the cracking came because i was in a hurry and didnt do it right, the lower fiberglass parts are very stiff, they are hand laid layered glass where the upper panels are flexible urethane... i was trying to cheat on materials and save time buy using the spray foam and it came back to bite me, the stuff im using right now is fiberglass body filler made by bondo, it is good for filling and burns in alot hotter. as you can see i ground out alot of the old and drilled holes to stitch together the two panels since they are of different materials. thanks

That explains the Haynes manual on the passenger seat too I got interested in what Jag parts were going to be swapped in...
I just read through your build so far and I like all the pics - an 87GT is a great platform to build on. I always thought that's what I would like to start with given the chance. Nice work seegeer - it's coming along faster than I anticipated! I'd never seen the body line where the molding was completely eliminated before but it looks good. I'll be interested to see what you decide on for marker lights as that's still something I'll probably change on the Roadster. What product are you using for "icing"? (looks like plastic panel repair filler)
ok well back from vacation and spent several hours sanding out the fiberglass. i have it pretty good but i am still going to have to fix the right upper portion of the ground effex on the passenger side, next after several weeks of searching for nice stock taillights, i broke down and bought a used set of pisa tails wiith corvette lights. although the tabs are broken off, i plan on molding them in so it should matter anyhow. this will clean up the back pretty nice. pics to follow
