Figured I would start a thread for my STM hood vent offer by "Tha Driver"; I will post a link to his website below...
http://angelonearth.net/customfiberglass/https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum4/HTML/054820.htmlThis first pic shows the postioned of the vent marked out with tape. The tape makes it easer to mark the vents position (to get it centered) as well as using it for a cut-line... I cut the top layer using a 4" cut-off wheel attached to a Dewalt angle grinder. The top layer is about 1/8" thick
This pic shows the top skin removed, exposing the under skeliton; The top skin needs to be cut carefully, you don't want to cut too deep and damage this under-section. After the cuts have been made, you need to pry it up around the edges to seperate the glue. Do a little at a time as you keep working your way around. A long prybar helps to reach the center glued sections...
This pic shows the ven openings cut into the lower structure and I filled in the larger opening w/ a piece of top skin. I used Evercoat SMC Panel Adhesive and I scuffed up all matting surfaces and removed paint. I also make some reinforcements on the left & right sides of each vent opening
This pic shows the vent in postion. Again, I used tape as a guide, it allows me to position the vent in the same spot every time. You will have to remove the vent numerious time as you trim the under structure to ge the vent to sit flush. Trim too much too quick and you will have to use more filler later (if you want o make the under side look clean)... You can also see I make some cardboard grills for mock-up; I am making my vent opening larger.
This is a side shot of the vent. I moved the vent further back (8" from the vent to hood edge rather than 7 1/4"). Since my vent openings will be larger, I wanted them to line-up with the headlight openings...
This pic shows the under side where I had to cut-out and flatten the corners of the vents. I also bonded in some filler pieces on either side (by the hood hinge locations...
More to come...
