ok so, when i turned my headlights off a few minutes ago after getting home, the lights closed fine, but the passenger side motor was going crazy. the knob on top was still spinning madly and making a really loud and obnoxious grinding/clicking noise. any ideas? i stuffed a rag around the knob and that stopped it from spinning, but it was obviously still trying and i was worried it would drain the battery in the night, so i just unhooked the battery.

Worn plastic gear inside the motor. You need to take the motor apart and replace it.

Or, bad contacts in the motor itself, but I'm thinking the gears sound like the better possibility.

Gen 1 or Gen 2 Headlights? Most likely a bad primary gear (large plastic one in the Gen 1). Go to the Ogre's cave and look for the headlight section or look up buddycraigg (yes - two g's) on Youtube - you will find everything you need at either place.

Gen 2 won't run motor(s) unless module is also bad. Module run motors 5 second max w/ no load.
