I am looking at wheels and tires for an 88 and need some opinions. I currently have 16X7" wheels with 205R55 in the front and 225R50 in the back. The wheel offset is 40mm. That combination has worked great for the last 10 years. The car does not have coil overs. I have been shopping for wheels and have not been able to find a 16” wheel I really like. There a few that are OK. I have found a few 17" wheels that I like better than the 16s.

If I go to 17” wheel what size tires will work?
Will a wheel offset of 45mm work?
I currently have staggered tires. Is there any benefit to keeping that?

45mm offset is ideal for the front, with a 17x7 wheel. (Anything from 38 to 48 will work, and will look okay.)
I use a 215/45-17

For the rear, look for a 17x8, 35mm offset. I presently use a 235/45-17, but I have used 245/45s. I also do not have coil overs.

The tire sizes are based on having the same outside diameter as the stock GT/Formula tires, in order to keep the speedo accurate. If that's not an issue, larger tires will likely fit.

I would recommend keeping the stagger. Will help to keep the car from being "tail happy".

I run 225's all around on my 17's, but I know most people around here stagger.

Whatever you go with, use this to make sure your overall size is correct:

I have the same question...sort of. i want to get new rims and tires for my Formula and am also going to be going with the 12" corvette rotor upgrade and rear coil-overs What are the widest rim/tire combos i can stuff on it without them rubbing on the inside or having them stick out and look ridiculous. Sort of looking for the perfect size if there is such a thing.

These are pics of the 88 coupe/Formula that I used to own.
The wheels are 17x7, 38mm front. 17x8, 35mm rear. Tire sizes are 215/45 and 235/45.

This last pic is the same car with different wheels.
The rears are the identical size and offset. The fronts are the same except 48mm offset instead of 38mm.

I'll add that the front springs have been shortened by one coil. Lowering has the effect of making the front wheels look a bit more tucked under the car.
