Hi forum, been working an this for more
than a year and juat drove it for a few miles
so I guess maybe I can "debut" it. Anyway,
here are some details about the swap in no
particular order.

-donor is a 98 firebird transam (wrecked).
-target is a 87 fiero gt.
-all emissions gear swapped and functioning,
including the in-tank components from the
transam.
-reverse drive starter engaging the fiero
starter ring gear from the transmission side.
-quartermaster 2 disc clutch actuated by
internal concentric slave cylinder.
-1/2" thick steel adapter using all 6 fiero
tranmission bolts.
-4 sp high geared econo trans.
-88 cradle.
-stock fiero axles.
-externally mounted vss pick-up.
-electronically temperature controlled
variable speed water pump.
-ls1 water pump converted to coolant manifold.
-stock transam exhaust manifolds.
-2 stock cats.
-2 turbo mufflers mounted in the tailpipe
position.
-2 tie rod end links bracketed to a strut
tower and to the firewall for torque struts.
-custom dash using the transam intrument
cluster.

The swap was difficult (aren't they all?),
but I was helped tremendously by all the great
information provided here on the forum - made
the swap lots easier than it would otherwise
have been.

I'll appreciate all questions, comments,
ideas, and critiques about anything
technical or mechanical; but please,
although cosmetics are important,
in this case what you see is what you get.

As I said, I've driven the swap for a few
miles. There were no strange noises, all
the gauges read correctly, and surprisingly,
there were no dtc's posted. However, at
this point I still consider the swap
tentative. I expect to have some problems
and won't consider the swap a success
until it has at least 500 trouble free miles.

The clutch also worked all right with only
slightly greater peddle effort than a
stock clutch. Of course, I paid close
attention to California Kid's advice about
not slipping it very much. Shifting through
the gears was about like stock, but it will
take some practiceto get my foot educated
for starting out in first.

Here are a few pics.

That is sweet. Now there are two people that hace succesfully done the LS1 swap. I just have the Duke so I can't imagine the speed and torque you are pulling.

In my regards,

One last note: Where did you get that dash kit? That is sweet.

That dash is sweet!! It looks a lot like what the 1990 would have looked like. Oh and I like the engine too.

Congrats. Nice job. If I may ask one question, though, why did you keep the air baffles? (Not a critique, just a question!) All the f-body guys ditch those first thing for a decent air box. I would think you could fab up a cold air kit that would fit better and make more power (not that this may be a large concern at this point!)

Keep us posted!

Here's another pic of the dash. it's home made,
not a kit. Glad you guys like it.

KissMySSFiero, this is what the mufflers look
like installed.

That's actually a pretty darn cool tail!

Kind of TVR Tuscan like.

Congrats on the whole car, very impressive.

Best!

Hi Artherd, Thanks. Maybe we could compare notes when you start working with your quartermaster clutch and slave?

Hartz, I wonder what rational the gm engineers
have for that airbox/resonator/donkey-dong thing, other than to take up space in the engine compartment? I'm using it because 1) it was there and 2) because, for now, it provides a more stock look for when I have to have it
checked by the carb ref's. Right now I still
have several months to go before my next
mandated smog check.

Hey Orville nice job they drive nice don't they.... I wished we lived closer.. You definitely did do some things different. Where did you put your water pump, and what kind did you use? Would it violate your CA. emissions to us the K&N. I see you flipped the fuel rail and vapor vent lines as well. are you still running the vapor line through the throttle body? I know allot of people bypass that. No carburetor icing in CA.( I don't mean plug it off for it lets steam off the top of the heads but not run the hose through the throttle body) I surprised you haven't thrown the codes for skip shift solenoid, and reverse inhibit solenoid. You can place a 4.9K resistor in each should fool the PCM. I imagine I am throwing codes left and right. (egr inop, egr pintle pos. Fuel quantity indicator, EVAP canister solenoid, low engine temp Vs time, and no rear O2's) haven't noticed any driving differences though. I plan on getting the PCM reprogrammed.

I have ran into just a couple problems so far.... Alt belt loose (easy fix) and fuel pump started loosing pressure. Will be driving it to fieroama Sunday we will see if I have any more. Once again great job... Love the f-body dash

edit... We must have been posting at the same time ... You just answered my question on the air box

Aren't you the guy that had that green fiero with the truncated front end?
Did the LS1 car used to have a speaker grille looking rear taillight setup on it?

Anyways, nice work on the LS1 swap.

Thanks for the encouragement, I need it and
appreciate it.

LS1swap, yes, Allen, it's too bad we're not
neighbors. The water pump is Davies Craig with
the electronic controller. it's located at the
bottom of the radiator on the outlet side. The
throttle body is as it was. I bypassed the shift solenoids with resistors. I think the reverse lockout takes twice the resistence to give the pcm the correct feedback. Yeah, I don't understand it either about not getting dtc's. We might both be running in open loop, but doesn't the pcm post codes anyway? The K&N
will be ok, in fact, I've puchased one - thanks for the part #.

Leper, yes, no, thanks.

Philipine, GTFiero1, here are some other pics
of the car.

Holy mother of Jebus.. very nice work on that car. It does remind me of a TVR Tuscan. I really like your dash, as well.

I bet that thing is fuuuuun on the road.

Orville, you don't happen to have another Fiero (stock) to park it next to and take some pictures do you? I'm wondering how much shorter that front end is. I have plans on doing something similar, and am interested in a comparison. Also, care to show some 'hood off' pictures, and let us know what (if anything) you cut away or relocated in the forward area there? Thanks.

ORVILLE: The Fiero gods will be pleased...your sacrifice & effort will not go unnoticed. I believe that futuristic creation resembles the goddess Fieronia (Part fiero GT & part shellfish).
Actually it resembles the new Lexus 2-seater convertible. In any case its a beautiful car-and a masterpiece.
Good Luck w/ the debugging my brotha'-

2.8-4sp, dosed, here's a pic of when I was just
starting to build the plug. It shows how far
back the frame was cut and also the radiator
position. My camera is loaned out, when I get it
back I'll take a shot of the car as it is now
with the hood up.
