Well, my car decided to quit turning over the other day, so I tore the engine apart in my garage. I got the head off and I wasn't too pleased to see what I saw...

Upon further inspection :

And I found this sitting on top of the #4 piston...

So, if a little washer or something f&cked up my engine, I'm gonna be pissed...

The #1 piston was all the way down. #'s 2 & 3 were all the way up, and #4 was up as well, although it was quite crooked. I was able to push it down though, so it must've separated.

When I drained the oil there was a gallon of pretty green antifreeze that came out looong before I saw any oil... The head gasket is in beautiful shape though so I'm stumped.

There was no loss of oil so I don't think there's a big hole going through the block or anything like that, but I have a feeling I'll be needing a new block now... Do you have one?

I'll have the whole engine torn apart tomorrow night to see what else is busted...

If I break it again, I think i'm going to do an engine swap.

But I've got this nice little 2.5L turbo kit for it sitting around just waiting to be used.

There is no hope for that Duke. You have a hole in the cylinder wall and a tossed rod. The whole thing is junk.

Sorry, man. The time for an engine swap has arrived.

what year is your fiero

if its a 84-86 find a 2.5L from a FWD 2.5L car 86 is preferable scince it was a roller motor. they have 10HP more or so than the fiero did also. just put the fiero accessories on it and it should fit right in with no mods.

if its a 87-88 motor then any FWD car from 1987-89 should fit in without any problems. grand am's are the best ones go get as they had 10-15HP more than most of the others and its still a pontiac engine.

then you can add on the turbo and get 150-160HP i figure.

Mine is an '86, so which car should I be looking for? I've got plenty of junkyards in my area, so I could go looking!

im not 100% positive, but im about 90% sure that a 85-86 roller motor should work fine, You will need to install your timing cover throttle body intake and exhaust on its block but everything else on it should be fine. and while the motor is out MAKE SURE to put a new timing set in the car. if your going to add a turbo put new rings in it also. forced induction always hurts the rings. but if you find a good enough engine leave it well enough alone (except timing set) find a 86 grand am that should be the best replacement engine. they are rated at 105HP so its a 13HP increase over the fiero. If time isnt a option on getting it fixed get a 2.5L from a 86 s-10 and drill the starter holes. the s-10 is rated at 105HP and has a much stronger block.

Oslo- I think I have an '85 4-banger sitting out at my dad's place (already pulled from the car). I'm sure it could use a rebuild (hasn't been run in years). I think you could probably just take it if you wanted it! (it's just a little west of Lakeville). Email me if you're interested: rob@xtralite.com

If I get the '85 block, will I still be able to use the roller lifters and roller cam?

MinnGreengt is obviously closer and I am clueless about the engine differences so that may be the way to go. The car mine came out of ran fine but it has been sitting 5 or more years so it will need alot.

I honestly don't know all that much about the 4-bangers... I've only worked on one, and it was an '84SE many years ago!

Although if I were to guess, I'd agree with m0sh_man in his 90% assumption that the '85 & '86 motors are the same.

Well, MinngreenGT I'll take you up on the offer for the engine.

I'll be going to Elk River tomorrow and I could swing down there too. What do you say?
