OK... as pretty much everyone knows, I'm in the process of doing a number of mods to my GreenGT (scoops, vents, the works). As some of my fellow MFF members have pointed out, by the time I'm done there will be very few untouched pieces on the car.
Photo from last fall... it will be a "work in progress" for quite some time
But when I look at the car, there is one more part I'd like to alter a bit before it is all over. The rear fascia. I have yet to see any production mods, and only very few individual mods for the rear fascia (There was a Red GT at Daytona 2002 with a modded rear fascia).
...now I've searched in every way I can possibly come up with for any info in the archives- and have come up empty. The only thing I managed to find using google was this page: http://www.fieros.de/de/treffen/trf2002.html which has another nicer pic and a good video of the car, but that's about it (I believe that this is Oliver Scholz's page).
As the photo states, the car is owned by Stefan Pfaff from Rehling/Bavaria in the South of Germany... anyone have any info on this car, the owner, or the "lower air diffuser" shown on the back? It rather looks like a stock wing turned upside down and attached... but I'm not sure (although I am going to see just how that would look when I get home tonight, as I'm not against using another wing to accomplish something like this ).
So- if you have any suggestions or information, I'd be very happy to hear it! I'm also going to email Oliver a link to this page just to see if responds or has any contact info for Stefan.
Hey Rob.. Here's what Stefan told me about his car....
The front fascia is taken off a Ferrari Kit which is available in Poland . I have taken a Masterform and I'm now in a position to manufacture those noses on demand . The production time is about 5 - 7 weeks , because I always trie to do 3 to 5 at once , so I have to collect orders up to 3sets than I can add 2 on my own risk . There is a similar fascia called the Euro Fascia Bumper in the US but the turning signal lights of the original can't be installed any longer . They have the turning signal lights in the front (in yellow), that was absolutely not my taste . So we change the upper front light to FORD Scorpio lights which have inner H7 Highbeam lights and the turning signal lights on the outside (but with yellow bulbs and clear lenses). The Fog lights (lower round lights) are Carello Lights from Italy, also OEM used in Ferrari Front Fascias.
to the mid and rear of the Fiero : I have manufactured a kind of a lower Air Diffusor System , known from German DTM Racecars . The set which is installed on my car was the prototyping . The Masters for the Winglets RH and LH will be ready in April . The rear Downforce Diffusor will be reproducable in June. It has an Alloy inner reinforcement plate which has the Stands integrated, the rest is PVC Fibre handlaid and Gelcoated. With the kit there is a reinforcement braket which has to be interchanged with the plastic bracket which holds the lower end of the rear bumper. The Diffusor is then additionally supported towards the front with two prebended and drilled steel brackets which are attached at the screwpoints for the Rear heat shield inside the Engine compartment.
The winglets LH and RH are molded from a styrofoam and than covered with Epoxy fibre material. It is screwed directly into the original Rocker panel with four Screws.
The wheels I'm using are 19" Momo Racer Rims, 3 Parts screwtyp. 225 x 35 x 19 in the front and 265 x 35 x 19 in the back.
The Airwing on Top of the car is adapted from a MR2 Tuner in Germany. I only had to change the sidestands for the two wings to make the wing usable on the Fiero . I have also ordered a JSP Terminator II Wing from the US which I try to fit to the fiero .
Engine : 3.4 L V6 with probably all the goodies you can put inside and outside the engine to make it a beamer .
Interior: The seats, dash, consoles, door covers, steering wheel are new upholstered with yellow and black Leather. Carpet is a yellow highfloor Carpet which is normally used in house carpeting . The middle console is changed for adapting the stereo, CD/DVD/Navigation system by Clarion. Equipped with a SAT - receiver you have a multimedia tasks in the car including Mobile car phone. All Amps and changers for the system are integrated in the rear trunk under a glass cover. This rear audio-video compartment is lighted with yellow neon . The same Neon light piles are installed under the dash. In addition I have integrated indirect console lights from the 7 series BMW which gives at night a kind of red light which is know from submarines control centers during attack . The doorpanels have integrated 16 inch double kickbass speakers which makes a subwoofersystem obsolete.
This is one bad ass ride! He also has another 88 GT which he is trying to restore to original. (unless he can find a set of T-tops to put in it!)
I have quite a few pics of it on my server at http://www.victorianvalhalla.com/fiero then click the Pfaff folder to see his car pics. They are pretty big files since he sent them to me in BMP format. I'll eventually convert them to jpg that are internet friendly.
E-mail me if you want Stefan's e-mail address.

Thanks for all the info Dale- I knew someone else on here must've seen & been interested in this car at some point! I'll be sending you an email shortly (as soon as that computer frees itself up). BTW, when did you get this info from him (as it references April & June, but no year)? I'm also going through the pics as I'm typing this... Thanks again!

I've been lookin at the rear bumper for days with my bodyman, trying to come up with ANYTHING to mold to it. Just about every panel of the car (like you mentioned of yours) has been modified in some way. All of them except for the rear anyways. I wish I had a solution as to what to do back there as well..

The whole reason for an air diffuser is to make the air under the car go faster and faster by forcing it lower or slightly side to side. A good example is looking at the rear of Viper Le Mans cars, huge diffusers on those. I hope to create one for my car as well, closing off the engine cooling from below to cooling from side scoops, etc, and possibly even integrate the exhaust into it. Hopefully it'll turn out good!

Looks an awful lot like a rear spoiler turned upside down to me...
Have you ever seen the bottom of a real Ferrari F355? Absolutely smooth expect for one 'trough' down the middle. That's where those big side scoops come in handy for pushing air through the engine compartment.

A full under carrige pannel like on the ferraris would be sweet. A Fiero's underbelly is pretty flat, so I t wouldnt be hard to mount somehting to the bottom. Plus the undercarrige pannel could be made improve down force, like the Ferraris and to funnel air to areas that need extra cooling. just a thought
but yeah I'd be cool to see some more rear facia mods.
I'd like to point out that I certainly wouldn't be adding the part specifically for it's downforce value, but moreso for it's looks. So as long as it doesn't have a negative effect on the handling- I'm all for it

Wow... I didn't even notice that before- that is a huge improvement over most F355 noses that I've seen as well!

They have some cool stuff in there (and I do see the side-splitters), but I'm more interested in his lower rear downforce deflector... Thanks though (just added the link to my bookmarks)

At first glance, I'd agree with you. But after looking closely at more of the photos than what is shown here (specifically a larger copy of https://www.fiero.nl/uploads/imgs2003/BlackGermanGt2.jpg ) one can see more detail that makes it obviously not just an upside down spoiler.
Well, I recieved good news & bad news in Sefan's response to my inquiry.
Good news first! He will be manufacturing & selling both the Rear Diffusuer & the Winglets. They will likely be ready sometime in July. The Diffuser (which includes all hardware and is fully adjustable) will be 375 euros (about $410 USD) +S&H, the Winglets will be 80 euros (about $90 USD) +S&H. (for currency conversions, visit http://www.xe.com ) .
Now the bad news. He had a "big accident" back in February... and his car is not in particularily great shape anymore
ouch!
The other good news is that he has also developed a European H7 headlight conversion (details and pricing to come):
to the mid and rear of the Fiero : I have manufactured a kind of a lower Air Diffusor System , known from German DTM racecars .

Last time I heard from him he hadn't given up on them.. He also has another 88 GT. He was looking for a set of T-tops for his car, we were able to find him some... I don't know a timetable but I bet the car will be back soon and badder than ever!

I made a mold for a Fiero rear diffuser, although mine is different than Stefan's. I used actual seperators to "diffuse" the air as well as the adjustable plate to add variable downforce. I will see if I have pictures of it, then I will post them. I would sell some of these if anyone is interested. I just never figured anyone would buy a Carbon Fiber diffuser to put on a Fiero.
As for the question of how it actually affects the car... who knows? It at least looks cool
Will- I'd definitely be interested in some more pics and/or info on your rear diffuser... I've still been brainstorming on how to modify the rear fascia, but haven't had much time to spend on the subject.
I also haven't heard any updates from Stefan... I might drop him an email and see what's up!
Rob, I have been looking at the neighbor's Ford Contour SVT rear bumper(around the exhaust) It looks very "do-able" It has a little screen in between the pipes. may not be sweet enough for ya, but they look close to the size of the fiero.
You know that you can use just about ANY rear bumper, just cut to fit!!
Revin- yeah I've been eyeing nearly every rear bumper I see, contemplating how it would look on the car... the SVT certainly isnt' a bad one- it still remains very clean and uncluttered. I'll keep it in mind
