Was their an '89 Fiero prototype, or did they just go to a '90 after production ended on the '88. Seems weird...I would have thought that the '90 Fiero prototype should be called a 1989 Fiero Prototype.

Auto companies work around 4-6 years ahead. Prototypes like the 1990 are cars with major changes and get noticed. The 1989 was only going to have minor changes and could have been built in preproduction form for testing in 1988. They probably had a few 1989 Fieros but they would have been very much or nearly identical to the 1988, much like a 1986/1987 GT.

that very car is called both the 89/90 prototype (loosly used) but i believe that it was a design for the 90 model year that would have been released in 89.. someone correct me if that isn't so. But I also believe that the 88 model was to have some minor changes and releasted as the 89.

Yeah, that's the '90 prototype. There was no specific 89 prototype because 89 was supposed to be a carryover year from 88. It was called the '90 prototype, because that body style was to be introduced for the 1990 model year.

The source Toddster quoted would prolly be the best source to use. the red car on Lisa's website is the '90 Prototype.

Kameo Kid's version of the story is the one most consistent with the facts. If you watch the video of the making of the prototype they refer to the prototype as the 1990 Fiero, and this video was made in August 1987. It is logical to assume that the 1990 would be released in October 1989 as a 1990 model. The 1988 would have only minor tweaks.

To solve this once and for all the GTP 1990 was a 1990 Fiero, The coupes seen above were 1990 coupes and are still on a GM test car lot. This info has been verified by John Shinella Pontiacs design chief [now retired]. I have met the man and heard from his own mouth confirm these as 1990 models. He was the First to release the pictures of them at the F.O.C.A. show at the Silverdome in Pontiac. The cars were to be displayed and were pulled at the last second by John Middlebrook Pontiac's General Manager. The reason at the time due to hard feelings between GM and the UAW over broken promises at the Fiero plant. This all took place in the mid 1990's.

You saying I'm wrong? Inconceivable! Now that I look at it, it does look very similar to the red '90. I've just always seen references to this one as the '89, and the page I linked lists it as '89. If it's on the internet, it has to be true, doesn't it? LOL

from what i have read this is the 89 proto type . and these pics are supposed to be in gm's testing yard .
as you can see these arent the same as the 88 . they have some of the same things about them . but have a few changes .
Yes they are the 89 cars. My friend Dave Clee took those pictures on a trip I regret missing out on due to building my new house. They have since been destroyed.
I just dont understand why car companies destroy concepts and such nice cars like those. Why dont they keep them in a warehouse or something for later use. OR, DISPLAY THEM FOR US TO ENJOY!
