I went to the drag strip and only one 350 ran, and it was a 15.2 I believe, tuning isues or something, but where was everyone else? I saw 1 4.9 run a low 15, the 2 N*'s run mid to high 13's and that was all I saw as far as V8's go. I was a little dissapointed with the turnout myself. I wish my small block was done so I could make a showing.

Archie and CrazyD did get to run. CrazyD blew a tire on thr trip there and started having a problem with the throttle cable, so Archie took the time to go and help out CrazyD. So they didnt make it. And aside from that, not many people were there

Pat,
Looks like the smallblocks weren't made for the dragstrip without breaking down. At least from my experiences it's not worth the trouble or expense. My 80 Malibu turns low 12's and the total cost was about 1/3 of my Fiero 350 turning 13.6's (Archie conversion) plus I don't face ridiculous time loss and expense for repairs if something does break. It's really too bad that the major issues of the drivetrain weren't addressed when people started throwing these engines into the Fiero and expecting to bring it to the dragstrip. Sadly that does mean that 2800 pound Fiero with a SBC is made only for the "awe" factor. All show no go. In all the years that the v8 Fiero has been around there has been only one guy that I consider a legitimate street car with a respectably fast 12.2 seconds in the quarter mile. That is after following up on fictitious references, threads and webpages of claims that were finally not real. There is too much of that bullsh1t going on. If a builder says it's gonna do 10's 11's or 12's in the quarter mile, and they know what they are talking about, then it should run those times.
On the other side of the coin there are plenty of reliable 3800sc's out there. Don Kruse and Fiero-X are guys that have gone into the 11's already and are working on going even faster. That illustrates what a well suited combination in the drivetrain can do, so why doesn't everyone get real with the V8 bragging.

Try this and see how "quick" you are: http://www.greatlakesdragaway.com/sportsman.htm

More power to ya, Dale. I hope you're not expecting to turn 11's without a bankroll.

I got .564, 5.36, then .5 on the 3rd try! Pehaps I "should" go pro?

How's THAT for bench racing.

You would be a terror at the drags. Do you drive an absentee smallblock?

Gave it 4 tries: 0.85, 0.59, 0.53, & 0.56, this old fart hasn't lost his touch yet.

Someone should take a survey here on the Forum, personally I believe you'll find most V8 Convertors are old farts like myself (probably not as old as me, but pretty mature). They didn't care about 1/4 mile drag racing, but bringing out the true exotic all around performance. Sure they still want quick aceleration, but having the quickest quarter mile ET wasn't on their list. Also entered into this equation is that they wanted reliable horsepower with durability and no fuss maintainence. I've heard of a least 6 3800SC's having to be torn down due to failures just in the last 12 months, and only 1 SBC V8. Even if I'm not entirely correct about those numbers do a percentage comparison between the number of SBC running to the 3800SC.....pretty significant difference.

Could the SBC in a Fiero be the lowest ET Title holder here on the Forum, sure it could if someone who's purpose minded enough to make it happen. It will take some custom parts and the proper chassis setup to make this happen in mid-engine configuration. Is it a smart thing to do?....probably not, the Fiero can do much more better than just running in a straight line. I agree with you that if Quarter Mile is 'your bag' the Fiero is a poor choice, it would be better to pick out a lighter car and purpose build it.

Another expense is the required safety equipment for machines running quicker than 12 second ET's. Don and FieroX will be crossing this bridge pretty soon if they continue to post sub 12 runs.

I didn't take my car to Milan for numerous reasons, one being it's not setup for quick ET. If I want to turn a real quick quarter, all I have to do is jump on my old '85 Ninja ZX900 with F1 Engine and run a 9.65 quarter @ 136mph, or my '95 Ninja ZX7R and run low 10's, that gets my adrenalin following. In comparison my GT is very slow. If I really need more of a 'rush' I can always get a physical, fly to LA and drive my cousins '65 GTO Alcohol Drag car that turns 8.50 @ 150mph (after I pass their requirements).

On the other hand, you Quarter Mile minded people need to get your car out onto a Road Course. It's an incredible experience, one that I wish I had explored many years ago. The personal rewards of this experience out-shines 1/4 mile like you wouldn't believe. You can also set a car up without burning a real big hole in your pocket, that will perform very well on the track. Take advantage of the true potential of these little cars.

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
