I'm looking to get some materials for DIY coilovers... Cheap = very good. I want some "decent" struts to modify, so I was thinking grabbing some KYB's. Local places want $66 ea for them, and I checked tirerack.com, and they've got them for roughly $50 delivered. Before I click 'place order', are there any other places which might be cheaper? Where are you guys getting your springs and adjusters (I think that's what you call them?)

Just the KYB rear struts from tirerack.com... you gotta click on the 'other stuff' link. I plan on getting the adjusters from http://www.rpmnet.com/ ~$47ea, and I think I can get 12" 350lb springs from either jegs or summit. That's all you need.

edit: https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/046456.html
edit again: jegs has 12" 350lb springs for $35 #122-12-350

Has anyone looked into if any of the coilovers made for other cars will fit. If you look on ebay you'll find a full set of coilovers for under $100, there must be something out there.

I haven't installed them yet, but I just bought a set of rear coilovers from a member (Thanks, Smokin' GT!!) and they're 2.5" o.d. threaded sleeves, 3.5" long (I think... I measured them Tuesday, and didn't write it down).

The springs are 7 inches long and 275 lbs/inch. Made by Ground Control, they appear to sit on the top of the factory spring perch. "Advertised" drop is 0"-2". After I find a set of front inTrax drop springs, I'll see how low they go

I'll probably put them on in a few weeks.

Alright, well I finally got everything in. Springs from Jegs, adjusters from here:

http://www.colemanracing.com/section/index.htp?id=343

7"x 2.04"ID, comes with a snap ring that centers it perfectly on the KYB struts. I also found something at the local hardware store that perfectly fits the top of the spring for a 'gasket' so you don't have metal/metal contact...

Yes, it's a toilet dealie. "Flush Valve Seal" made by Harvey's.

Lets see... Roughly... $100 for struts, $64 for adjusters, $80 for springs, and like $10 for the two gaskets, and rubber stoppers from the "Help!" section... All that is to my door. total: $254. If you already have good struts, you can already save $100.

Do you need to cut off the entire stock spring perch from the strut?

Sadly yeah. It took me probably 3 or 4 hours worth of work to do both of them with an angle grinder... Probably could have done it in an hour if I weren't so worried about overheating it...

Well see, here's the thing... I can tell you right now there's going to be a noticable difference... But that's because:

Before: rotten rubber bushings, dead shocks, 100% stock suspension and stock 2.8.....
After: Northstar engine, poly bushings, NEW KYB's, and coilovers obviously
