Thought I would be clever and clean up some parts with some POR-15 silver and black. I did several pieces, and got... err, a little bit carried away. I noticed that my O2 sensor and bung was a little discolored and rusty, and I thought "self, a little silver would spruce that right up..." So I up and paint it. Genuis! It looks beatutiful! People at the San Antonio Round Up will be impressed and amazed! After curing, I started the car and watched with none too much enthusiasm as the my bung started smoking badly... and the paint kinda melted like plastic wrap when you put a lighter to it.
And I am sad to say that my bung looks worse now than if I had just left it alone. When the POR melted, it took off any remaining plating that was left on the Bosch sensor. A shot of my flaking bung hole:
But to my credit... The POR brochure mentioned apllying the product to mufflers and such.... So here is what POR-15 does to rusty/greasy/oil patchy looking tips. I like the look okay... it loos a lot better than when I just tried spray painting them with high temp rattle can. The paint did not stick, the rust came back, and the patchy oil just looked terrible. Revin commented that when following my black car (which was most of the time) , he could not see the exhaust at all. Invisible or rusty? I guess it is a personal choice. I sealed the POR with high-temp clear and after 800 miles the tips still look excellent! The POR-15 handles exhaust tip temps quite nicely.
Next you will see a before and after of the battery tray area. (battery is moeved to front using a nice looking WCF box) (special thanks to batboy on his 'how to' thread on doing the front mount install) The area is (was) phenomenally rusty. The old tray is undergoing a blakeinspace experiment that you guys will need to check out in tech in a few months.
BEFORE:
AFTER: (you can see some of how nice the silver POR-15 looks and works)
Lastly I wanted to show you the headlight buckets. 95% of cars looks like this... NOT attractive. (forgive strategic product placement and a guilty admission that I WILL buy infomercial products) BEFORE:
AFTER:
In summation, I like the product. Warning... they were not joking when they said IT WILL NOT come off your skin. Apparently that does not apply to hot bungs though.

This is wherer I got my stuff at. Pretty good customer service and fast shipping, free over a $100. I was happy with the business I did with them. Jason
Okay is the subliminal message here that Killian's is better the Shiner? Nice touch I looked back to make sure this wasn't a Buddy Craigg thread. I thought he had switched secret ingredients for a minute (his secret ingredient is Corona).
Kidding aside, that looks nice. I may order some and give it a try when I tackle the 84 engine bay. Thanks for posting.

your "bung hole" looks like it has a little red around it ! *snicker snicker*
and are you sure it is a bung hole and not POT HOLE!?!?!?!? I think it is AMAZING that you found out how to get to your bung hole! Did someone show you how to get there? ( P.S. I saw my bung hole while fixing a exhaust leak and it looked better than yours! )

I think a certain 'someone' has a bunghole fixation.

That looks like some good stuff! I wonder if that's what the cheap ceramic coating places use... Can anyone tell me if a 4oz can of this stuff is enough for 1 cradle?
I bought it in a quart and seperated smaller amounts into smaller jars.....to keep it fresh. Most of it went into glass jars...and a little into a plastic peanut butter jar. When I opened that little peanut butter jar..it exploded. POR15 sent me a new quart and said that it was impossible for it to do that.... so I put some more into another plastic peanut butter jar and guess what? .....(yeah I had to prove them wrong), It swelled up that the cover is almost a half circle. No, I wont open that one.
THe rep said that veggie oil takes it off nicely.....also, a shower will cure it and it peels off nicely......and yeah my hair grew back nicely too. The moral of my story........I will never rust! John

I hope veggie oil only takes it off before it's cured.. I don't want this 'impermeable magic paint' coming off if i drop my salad in my engine bay..
I found that out the hard way....... The moral of my story........I will never rust!
Oh dude! That is the funniest pic I have seen in a long time! Thanks for stepping up and sharing. I showed and read it to some friends and you had them rolling...
Did it just get on you or did some wind up in wierd places that were impossible to remove? like the ceiling, or a car part/panel you didnt want to get painted?
After sealing the POR for just a few hours until I was ready for the second coat, I pried the lid off and it actually blew off. Slung POR all in my hair... it could have been much worse had the can been full. The rep you talked to didn't know what they were talking about if they said the contents did not build up pressure. Either that or you and I are just POR idiots.
Well, major pos (+) to you for that. Thanks OreiF for the POR-20 tip... I guess I should keep that in mind

Holy COW. I thought the little bit I have on my fingertips was bad.
Ok folks. Pay heed to my wisdom!!!!
Never open a can of POR-15. There is never a reason to actually pry the lid off. Its messy and can get worse than even I had dreamed. Here's what you do: Take a big fat screwdriver--and a small sledgehammer... poke a hole in the lid. Having seen the explosion, I'm going to suggest you hold a rag around the screwdriver when you poke the hole. Now you can just dribble some POR15 out onto the lid and load up your brush right there on the lid. Now when you're done, you just take a little piece of plastic wrapping... such as the plastic cover that was protecting the bristles of your cheapo paintbrush, and plop it on top of the hole. Make sure you get POR-15 all over the bottom of the plastic so it forms a good seal. Over the next few days it will dry and create a perfect seal. I've had POR-15 survive for over a year this way and its in perfect condition when I want to use it again. Opening the lid causes oxygen to get in there and then you have a shelf-life issue. So now when you want to use it again, you just peel off the plastic thingie on top, and re-punch the hole. Ta-da! You'll limit the damage from knocking the can over or exploding lids etc to small amounts.

ROFLMFAOOL thats the funniest thing ihave seen in a while... please do it again but this time TAPE IT!!!
JohnnyK...... The rep did say while the POR15 is wet....it will remove BETTER with veggie oil, I never tried it though. I hate to admit it, but around my eyes I used paint thinner...to delute it and then soap to get as much off as i could. I loooked like a friggin racoon for days.
I did buy more of it, I love it....and if you coat it with a clear coat after ,it wont dull when exposed to the elements.
blakeinspace... Im glad you enjoyed it...I look back now and still say....holy****!!!! It burns when you get it in your eyes...dude. My rear bumper was covered and the ceiling and the windows and the floor....in my ears ..my eyes ...my nose....my mouth (doesnt taste good)...I sent POR the picture....they still say it cant happen! I now divide all of mine up into glass jars...havent had a problem yet!
Automoda Thanks for the safety tip...where were you last summer???.....lol..I thought on how to open the other bottle of POR...I thought maybe Id put it in a coffee can and install the lid...duct tape it on then using adrill...Id drill down through both lids and if she explodes....so be it..you know?
TaurusThug Im going to have to pass on that one......sorry......lol

wanted to thank Automoda for the tip. That's probably the best method I have heard (read). I will be certain to use it and pass it on to other enthusiasts!
I guess it is time to let this slip into the archives... the title probably made people a little tense... What can I say...? I have a rep to protect:
