Alpine Iva-d300 indash DVD player with motorized 7" touch screen lcd monitor Alpine 6 disk Changer Alpine Ai-net
The worlds smallest computer. I just built this. It is the exact deminsions of the head unit but 2" deeper. It is 1Ghz processor, 512 ddr 266 ram, 40gig hard drive, DVD burner, and DC converter all in this compact box. Here it is together with the head Unit. Looks bigger but notice the trim is not on the head unit.

Estimated price? And what all can you do with it once installed?
Nearly $4000. Not shown is an Xbox.
With this system one can obviously Watch a DVD wile driving. With a touch of the screen you can switch over to the computer wich is mounted under the Head unit and access the internet via, wireless interent, pick up the wireless keyboard with tracking ball and surf away, send/receive email, or access any computer on our 35 server 250 work station network from anywhere in the country, or download music to the hard drive and either listen to it as an MPG or burn it to CD and pop it in to the head unit. Or at the touch of the sreen switch over to the Xbox and play games with the wireless controllers, it also has Navigation. Also with the Ai-net box you can add just about anything you want. Also you can tap into your cars computer with the apropriet cable and monitor your engine rite there on the indash Monitor.
What do you think.
If any one wants one of these computers, I can build them to order in about a week.

And to think... we b!tch about people using cellphones while they drive...
J/K. That's some cool stuff! Nice work!

I took a towncar to a site last week, and the guy had one of those in his car, hooked up to a DVD and funky navigational system. the dvd looked GREAT, and the nav system looked almost like you were in a "doom" type game. very cool stuff!
Thanks for sharing the pics..too bad it isn't going in yer car...!
Okay I'll ask the obvious. How much for the computer only? Oh, and VERY COOL! That means I can drive and check out PFF at the same time! hehe
It was close to $1000 but there was no expence sared. It has 512mb of DDR ram, 40 gig HD, 1Ghz pross., and the biggy is the front loading DVD burner. Loads just like a car CD player. USB 2.0....bla, bla , bla........
So what im saying is thats how much it was decked out, fully loaded.
How about a parts list of the computer you built. I want to build a computer to install in my car to use to play MP3's and interface with the engine diognostics.

how much of we add our own ram, hard drive, and cd/dvd drive? would it have room for a standard drive or does it take laptop drives?

Hey everyone thanks for the complements. At the moment I'm not sure that I want to give a parts list because this is something I am going to try to make a little money on. We did alot of reserch to get these parts and part of the reson for doing this project was to see if we could get any interest in these. I will have to go back and look at our invoices and see what I would charge for the machine minus the ram, Hard Drive and DVD. I will get back with you though. If there was an interest, I will give all you guys a good deal though.

That is totally awesome!! Man too bad it is so$$$ I bet you could build a stripped down version! You need to add wifi and netstumbler to find open access points! Sweet a + for you we must have pics after installed!
From there you add your "normal" PC componants. This is a BASIC PC system. You cant play high end games, or do any real computing as the 60W Power supply will limit you. But Music, Video, Basic Games, E-Mail, Internet, ECM Monitering are all easilly achievable.

OOOOooo... Mini-ITX.... nice implementation tho... It is a 1GHz processor but it is a VIA C3... not really powerful enough for gaming/3D... but way good enough for media playback. I have been thinking about doing one of those...

Would you need to use a sound card with this for playing Mp3's? What would be the quality? Any recomendations on a Head Unit? Can you just amplify it without the head unit?

It has on board sound. I will be using a converter that will go to the AI-net box.
I will post more pictures as I install this tomorrow.
I wasn't gonna say anything, I didn't want to step on anyones toes, but theres alot of information on these types of motherboards at www.mini-itx.com , Granted, people may soon be saying that they can build these systems cheaper, but theres something to be said for proper assembly.
I wish you luck in your venture, If the price is right, they will sell. This is a market that is set to explode. There just needs to be a well-designed, well supported (software), affordable solution developed.
I predict that these will become as popular as DVD players in cars within a few years. OEMs have already dabbled with similar setups (Chrysler 300 Hemi C)
I just think that they need to get away from the term "computer" if these are going mainstream.
I am building a MATX Athlon XP motherboard tray into my center console, so if anyone wants to play DOOM 3 in a fiero when it comes out, swing by Maine!
