Who would be interested in these?

I am currently building a custom center console for an 8" sub. I have never liked the 10" sub-enclosure since you lose arm /elbow room. With the 8" sub enclosure it appears that it will only take another 3/4" to 1" of space compared to the depth of the stock jockey box.

These enclosures will utilize the stock center console bottom and have a modified computer cover that houses the sub. Both of these pieces will be bonded/glassed together to maintain a single piece appearance. All stock mounting points will be utilized so there will be no modifications or extra holes to be drilled on your part.

The RCA connection will be on the back side so that the speaker wires can be hidden. All consoles will be covered in either color matched leather or interior vinyl. Material will depend on what you want.

As for the speaker and the speaker cover. I am currently looking at using the JL Audio W0 sub and then having the speaker grill covered with matching color speaker cloth. There are numerous other options for speakers out there but this is what I am starting with. I would love the Blaupunkt speaker that is out but it's rather spendy. Currently these enclosures do not include the speaker or the amp.

There was another center console 8" sub enclosure offered by someone in Canada but I don't know if they are still making these or not.

So here it is. I am offering an alternative to the big clumpy, elbow room stealing 10" sub enclosure.

What do you guys think these should sell for?

Anyone who is interested after I post pictures would have to send their center console to be modified. I don't have any spares at this time so this is the easiest way to start.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

No never thought about stacking two 8's. But, I did think of doing a band box (I think that's what it is called) similar to what's in the Dodge Viper. There are two 6" subs in that center console. This is possible if you relocated the computer and sacrificed some more elbow space.

Hmmm, plenty of lookers but no takers...lol

Anyway, I am sure many of you want to see photos. This prototype enclosure should have some good work done by next Thursday on it. I will post progress pics for everyone to see.

All corners will be rounded similar to the stock center console so this will look like it belongs there. No ugly black box or faux carpeting used with this enclosure.

UPDATE I will have the prelimary/rough mold complete by this Wednesday. I've decided to go to fiberglass instead of all MDF. It's more durable and allows for more finish options. With the glass you can color match to your exterior paint or cover it all up or even just cover part of the console. My first finished console will be color match to my car, with a custom arm pad out of leather, two lighter plugs and maybe some accent "Fiero" lighting. Just to show what options you will be able to order.

Like I said before, "This mod will use your current center console and it will be modified for either an 8" or 10" sub." Okay, so I added the 10" option. Other upgrade at this time will include a second cigarette lighter or auxillary port for your cell phone charger, radar detector, portable DVD/CD what have you. Once again this will be very similar to your factory center console with minimal elbow room loss.

Pictures will be posted on Wednesday or Thursday....remember these photos will be the roughed finish. It will not be the final finished product.

Current pricing structure (let me know if this is realistic):
$185
Modify your current center console with 8" or 10" sub enclosure includes:

  • Custom enclosure at .25 to .35 cuft depending on 8" sub used.
  • ? cuft depending on 10" sub used (need to calculate this)
  • 5 position quick connect for external speaker wire connection
  • Box is sealed with silicone at all joints to ensure no air leaks
  • Covered in Fiberglass and painted to color match your car with clear coat (factory colors only, custom colors extra)
  • Simple arm rest pad in vinyl color matched to your car
  • Uses factory mounting points
  • Fits rear wall carpet outline with no modifications

Options:

  • second lighter outlet including wiring - $25
  • Fiero name or Logo cut into console with 12v lighting - $75
  • Cup-holder(s) only 1 at this time - $15
  • Interior of box sprayed with Duramat sound sealer - $30
  • Line back of box with Duramat -$? (need to price this out)
  • Custom paint to match your car based on your paint codes current price +10% PPG paint used unless specified otherwise by purchaser

What you as the purchaser needs to provide:

  • Your center console (condition of vinyl does not matter but structure needs to be intact) if you do not have one then it will be an additional $100
  • Tell me which sub you are putting in with its specifications so the box can be designed properly all boxes currently designed to the Rockford Fosgate Punch series 2 in 8" and 10"
  • A list of the options you want to have on your center console
  • Payment for the enclosure and options
  • Payment for return shipping (this may change but for now I have to ask this. This should be the same weight or a little lighter than the factory center console.)
  • The factory color of your car or the custom paint code using PPG codes
  • The color of your interior for the arm rest pad (any color)

If I can think of anything else I will modify this section. With the 160 or so views I am hoping there is some interest in these. If not, I will have a very nice center console sub enclosure that no one else has okay FastFieros will have one too.

Can you modify one for the firebird interior? I used the top portion of the stock console in the firebird configuration, but a custom box to fit there would be even better.

My custom made console that I built last summer - 8" Rockford Fosgate, that resembles the stock dimensions as close as could be. About .37 cubic ft. Are you talking about something similiar to this?

I don’t think I can at this time. This is my first go at a custom enclosure and using fiberglass. Want to get the first ones perfect before venturing off to one off designs. But, there is a possibility depending on how these turn out.

Yes, but I do not think I am going to go with the vinyl wrap at this time. Just a leather/vinyl arm pad and the rest painted. I’m having too much fun playing with fiberglass and MDF right now.

Well, I just wanted to provide an update. The center console with the new sub enclosure is basically built. The fiberglass is currently curing and once that is finished I will cut the holes for the speaker and the wiring connector. I should be able to take the photos for everyone tonight or some time tomorrow. I wanted to wait on the pictures so you can see the inside of the box to see how it is sealed and also so you can see the joints and how tight this enclosure is.

Right now the only thing I am not happy with is the size/depth. The next box I will have to find a way to make it smaller. Basically this enclosure started out with .50 cubic feet to allow proper displacement for the backside of the sub. Once installed I will have the required .37 cubic feet of free air that is required for this sub. I have switched the sub to an 8” JL Audio W0 sub.

This is the first enclosure I have built so I am changing things as I go. I am realizing that to make this so it is a simple slide in unit I can not make the custom modes that I want to without the customer modifying the center console skeleton. Now, I am willing to do this for my car but I don’t know if everyone else is.

So, this first enclosure is just my basic concept without mods to the skeleton. I will make a second one which will require mods to the skeleton and I will let the customer decide which one they want for their car.

Bear with me...I will have photos posted over the course of the weekend. I didn’t realize the curing process took so long.

PHOTO UPDATE

I know, about time I got off my butt and took some photos. Remember, this is my first attempt at glass work so it's not pretty. I still need to sand this down and then apply the finish layers, paint and cover and I am all set.

First pic is an overall. Like I stated earlier, "I'm not happy with the depth" but I will work on that to see how shallow I can make this and giver proper sound.

Second pic:
The opening is cut for a JL Audio 8" W0. Notice the fiberglass patch in the rear of the box. I forgot about the computer when I drilled the hole for the connector.

Third pic:
Closeup of the connector and the joints. This box is glued, stapled and sealed so no air is getting out of any of the cut joints. The connector itself is a good quality connector as you will see in the next pic.

Fourth pic:
Connector side of the connector...LOL...as you can see this is far enough up that you can use banana clips or what have you to make your terminal connections without worry of hitting the center console skeleton.

Fifth pic:
Although I glassed over the computer port and lighter area I did not destroy this area. It will be dremelled out and maintain it's funtional use. Just easier to lay the glass this way.

Sixth pic:
Just a rear photo so you can see what materials I am using in my process. The cloth is a fibercloth. I use this first to help maintain the rounded corners (since I strip off the original cover) once this sets another layer of glass and resin are applied to add strength to the structure.

So, that's where I am at right now. Like I said before, this is my first one and the next one will definitily look better and smaller.

Thanks for looking

You may want to consider relocating the ECM to be down low (above the fuel tank) to allow for more room for the sub magnet. I've got a 10" Alpine sub between the seats with just over .5 cubic feet (calculated) that only interferes with the passengers shoulder area about an inch when the seat is all the way back and tilted. My box is 3/4" MDF with no cover for now.
