I did both but I'll have to wait til I get home to show pics of it.
Raised from an I beam and put jackstands under it. Also if you use the brace in the trunk make sure you don't have it hanging too long. It will tear up that brace. So support it from the jackstands too. Then I dropped the cradle onto a furniture dolly and rolled it out. I just need to get the car back down and on the road again!!! GRRrr

The last one I did was a bit tricky...I removed wheels, lowered car with hyd. jack until cradle was resting on home made "engine dolly". Removed cradle bolts...hooked cherry picker to trunk bar. The tiny little bar that the trunk latch grabs when it is closed...yes, that. I raised the car from there and rolled the engine out. Did the same on the install. Used a small sledge to tap the bar back into shape when finished so the trunk closed properly and fully. I WILL NOT use this method on the next one. Entirely too stressful!!!

Ya' know...That really makes me feel like an idiot. My first engine drop, I had access to a lift. No problem. My second one I did as mentioned above. Not once did I ever think to pull the trunk carpet and look for possible hooking points. Thank you for that pic 86GT. I feel like a new person!!

I use engine hoist to lift it up, then once the cradle is out from under the car I lower it to a normal height and use 4 jack stands so I can clean up the engine bay safely. Pic's this weekend.

They are 2x6's. 4 for the legs and 2 for the boom.
Lifted the car with the engine and cradle no problem.

I'm making something similar to Tweakers, except I am using scrap pipe I grabbed at work. I will trust steel pipe and my welds before I would trust a piece of wood with a posible unseen crack. Although I have to say Tweakers idea looks like it was built safe and does not rely solely on one piece to hold the weight.

I would NEVER trust the braces in my garage. The stress that puts on them is different than what the truces are designed for, and point loading half of a car is WAY too much for the average garage.

Nice creative ideas though.

No but if tweakers idea was used, and the top of the frame was bolted to the truces in the garage to keep the frame straight up and down, with the main weight still being supported by the frame....I would still use some BIG feet for it, but I have to say, what Tweak did was ingenious.

Well I can’t pull the engine, but it does make it easy to work on the underside.

I lay concrete blocks down in two rows on the driveway (holes facing up). I lay 2 sets of steel ramps from Harbor Freight on top of the blocks. Drive the car up onto the ramps. If I need to I can lift the car up with the jack (and jack stands) and remove a section of ramps and blocks for extra room on any end or corner. Or, just slide under from the front or rear to work in the middle.

I may have a picture, I will have to look. All I did was take a jack stand and raise the rear up just enough for my cherry picker to slide under. Then I lowered the car onto the legs of the cherry picker. The cradle will rest perfectly on the legs. From there if you look in the engine bay on both sides are eye holes. I have two chains with hooks on the end that go into those eye holes. There is one on each side of the engine bay so that it will lift evenly. From there I just raise the car using the cherry picker and the engine cradle will stay on the cherry picker legs. Its very simple and very safe.

I haven't pulled my engine yet, but I'd probably use solid concrete blocks. I figured you were asking where to put the jack stands.

My lift is a American made BendPak Inc.. The one that Harbor Feight sells is a cheap chinese copy. I bought mine from Northern Tool about a year ago and have been very pleased with it. In fact, I don't know how I ever did without one now...
