What makes you think the tranny is bad if the axles exploded? That would mean they failed, aka, they were the weak link. What evidence do you have of tranny implosion?
Hey Tina, been there done that, far too many times!!!
Opted for some Custom Build Assemblies to the tune of $1,700. Crazydave and myself starting running them in about the last 5 weeks.
They're made up by an Axle Builder here in lower Michigan, who designs his own axles and runs a AA Fuel Digger.
You'll more than likely find that right where the shaft goes into the tri-pod knuckle, the shaft is sheared through, along with some other parts fractured.
Cost bucks to go fast !!! I just got tired of being on the other side of town, every 2 years with axles looking like Tina's, and having to call a flatbed tow truck. I was running Mark Williams Racing high alloy splined shafts, and they'd still only last about 2 years before shearing (my car will twist stock shafts like pretzels).

wOw Tina greasin' up the track again" ( looks like some crazy grass you parked on as well !)
Are you saying that even after a cyro bath, you could break something inside?
Wasn't too bad. Track was up and running again within minutes. Yeah, now that you mention it, it doesn't look too hot.
Firm believer in cryo, more than ever, it's just well past history. Just wish I could of got a few more runs in, the car was running stronger than ever.

Well Tina, looks like the Phantom Grip works good, seeing as it took out both sides at once ! Before I installed my Phantom, it would take out one side or the other, never both.

So, Tina, is that a Fiero Getrag? Have you done anything to it besides cryo and the Phantom Grip? If it held up ok, that's a big statement about the 282's strength. I'd much rather lunch an axle than a tranny.

Yeah, that's the Getrag. Cryo and the limited slip. The lather is toast though it appears. The axles are still the ones out of my first 84/ SBC.
You should of seen the launch that broke it. WOW. Over time I got pretty good watching the lights with one eye and focus with the other, getting some great shots of people with their cars. Not this time though ... I had the car in focus and thought I had just capured the greatest shot ever. Some serious air under the front tire. Nuttin ... the other car, yes. Not mine though.
TIna, i was just tonight looking in to the phantom grip setup. and now i want one even more.
more wishful thinking than anything really since i had a baby 2 weeks ago. and was fired 4 weeks ago. how knows how long it will before i get to by any toys for myself.
if the stock axles held up this long to your stroker, then i'm sure my plan ol carbed engine will be just fine.

Not yet. Procastinating a bit. Did drop the fluid from the trans though ... just as clear as it was when I poured it in the day before we went to the strip. No nothing in there that didn't belong. Hopefully I'll get to it in the next couple days ... to be honest though ... the thought of all that greasy mess and driving season pretty much being over isn't helping with the motivation.

I am asking because I managed to do the same exact thing to my axles, it looks identical, except for your dead grass and immaculate car. I am also procrastinating.

This is not an insult in any way, but do you drive your car on the strip? If I had a high powered beast like this I wouldn't let anyone touch it, too much power that could cause some serious problems.

That's because the manual trans cars take a "set in" by the main driver of the car, meaning they get used to that driver of the car. Put a stranger in there, the car doesn't like it one bit, and will start trashing parts. Old Wise Tale or maybe not, it the old days they said that doing this would really mess up the clutch.

Sounds like it ... doesn't it.
Truth is I can count the people that drove my car on one hand. No, not insulted by your post btw either. The few that ended up driving my car, drove it because they are real good at it. Do I drive my car down the quarter mile ? Sure do and it's not that I don't want to drive my car down the track everytime myself. Bottom line is reality. A while back Jon drove the car, finished up the clutch for me, which was nothing big. I knew it was slipping in 2nd before he agreed to make a few runs. 3 to be exact. He broke into the 11's, 11.9 to be exact. So I knew the car could do it. Trans was still good too, when we left the strip.
A few weeks ago I drove a 11.5. So I am getting better at it too. The problem owning a car like this is, you get to like it. I call it my little mental racing block ...if you put as much work and money into the car you/I just don't beat it down the track like somebody who isn't as attached to it.
The other person who got to drive the car down the track was Greg, my BF. He does almost nothing but work on fast cars. When I handed him the helmet a few weeks ago and asked him to drive the car, ... alright honey, see if you can turn a better time ..., I knew chances would be "something" would break. He too is at home at the strip, but also knows my car inside out. The man can drive and he knows the capabilties of the car. My money was on the trans. He reluctantly agreed and it did break. No hard feelings here, just proves there are remnants left of that mental block of mine. If it wasn't, it would of broke it while I was driving it.

Hard to be sure from looking at pictures, but I'd be willing to bet that the tranny survived and all you need is a new (and much stronger) set of axles.
Something else you might want to consider is doing a little math and adjusting the rear tire size / composition so that when you get to the point were something is going to give, it's the tires that spin rather than expen$ive drivetrain parts breaking. This won't slow you down on the track if you size them right...
