I was looking through the threads lastnight and I found this Fiero:
But I havent been able to find any additional pics of this car. I am working on designing a paint job for my Fiero based off of this yellow and black formula drag car. If anyone has any photos of this Fiero please post them. Thanks. Here is what I have been working on in photoshop for my 85GT:

Wow! Great minds think alike. I am having my Fiero painted with that exact paint scheme, as well. The black and yellow scheme. It is in the body shop right now and I am told that he should start squirting color in two weeks. Just a few more body panels to tweak and put in primer. I have gone as far as to copy the exhaust set-up from the real verison of this proto-type, as well. The one that I see here is the back up car with the stock 2.8 V-6. The real proto-type had a 2.7L Quad-4 and it was destroyed by GM.
The Pictures above are the real McCoy. Pontiac had the SD removed and put in a stock 2.8 at some point. I do not know all of the history, but maybe we can get paced84 or RareW66 to chime in and give us some details.

Is there a way to confirm that? I was told there were two of them and that the real one was destroyed. The photos, in the magazine, shows two different driver's side sail panels, as well. Something strange happen during the photo shoot. Also, what happen to the rims? They look terrible.

It is a misconception that once a prototype car or in this case a promo car is sacred once it is built. Reality is that many of the prototypes were canbalized for other projects. This Hot Rod car is no exception. The original SD was removed from the car and used on another project. Even the original SD out of the #2 Indy Pace car was taken for another project (Sunfire Concept??). As for the HR Mag car, my research with many sources that worked with Fiero at the engineering level indicate that the SD went in to the 89 Stinger Concept. Here is a little info from April 2006 High Performance Pontiac. Note the exhaust tips. Hopefull these scans are good, it is the best I can do.
The myth of the "Back-up" car with the 2.8 has been around for many years but has been found to be false. Upon inspection of the car, all of the correct hardware, mount points are there. Whomever changed the SD for a 2.8 had to fabricate brackets to mount the 2.8 back in to the car. Why this car was saved is beyond me because this car sat many years with no drive train in it before some one at GM decided it was significant enough to save. Out of the nine Fieros that GM has saved, only two of them are in the same condition and configuration as original. The #1 Fiero and the Huffaker GTU. Everthing else has had changes for unexplained reasons; even the 90.

Hard telling what happened to the driver's sail panel. Possibly damaged with all the use the car got?? The yellow paint does continue on the sail frame so just the sail insert has been changed. The passenger side sail panel is plain which I can only assume is the original.
As for the rims, they are corroded from sitting outside in the boneyard. The polished rim is pitted when you see the car live. The wheel centers are magnesium if I remember correctly.
Were you able to find the correct rims for your replica? One of the old FOCOA newsletters had an article interviewing the guy who grafted the lights in to the nose. I cannot seem to find it right now. Good luck with your project, I would love to see it when you are done.

On the drvers sail panel the yellow paint was flaking off in the early 1990's. I suspect they replaced it vs painting it with the yellow to match again.
The car was also with out the 4 Super Trapp mufflers and wheelie bars in the earliy 90's also.
I also read the DOHC SD parts were vary scarce in the late 80's and GM reused many of them for many different projects. This matches the info Fred had on this.
The condition of this car is an example of how show cars were treated after their use is over and this is one of the lucky one's. GM for the longest while trashed everything. The only cars saved were the favoite ones from Bill Mitchell or others that were hidden away. It was the late 70's before they showed an interest in saving anything and the late mid 90's before they really put a good effort to save some cars. The Car Craft Fiero was in such poor condition they deamed it not worth the money to save it since it was mot customized by GM anyway.
At one point GM was going to kill off the X job and Y job Show cars from Harley Earl. The X job from 1938 is considered the true first protoype show car and is priceless in value. GM was going to scap it in the early 70's till some people from the tech center steped in.
Also note it was proven not long ago one of the lost Corvette Grand Sport from 1964 was taken to Milford and burned. This car today is worth millions. So don't cry if you mom sold your baseball collection it could have been worse.
Oh and no if it is not based on a stock platform they will not sell you these cars. Few are offered and most are just paint and trim modified cars.
