I found this in my latest issue of Kit Car magazine. It multiplies brake line pressure. Here is a scan of the article.

A lot of big diesel trucks have inline boosters but they're vacuum powered, My friend and I just finished modifying one tonight for his MGB race car. We put a smaller vacuum canister on it to give it a reasonable assist for the application, have yet to see how it works.

It's just a stepped piston; it'll multiply the brake pedal travel by exactly the same ratio it multiplies the brake line pressure by. Easier to get the same result with a longer brake pedal or repositioned master cylinder link and every bit as "useful".
