The car says Trans Am GTA on the nose because there are two holes under it that needed covered. Someone took the Fiero emblem and Pontiac needed to cover the holes to display the car.
If you also note the sail windows are painted black too and not clear. This is because they were broken and repaired and it was cheaper and easier to just paint them black since the car is just going to be displayed.
This is what was on the nose originally. I have heard someone in the tech center has one but it has not found its way to the historic collection.
This car was called a GT but at one point they were going to call it a GTP also.
To be correct GT or GTP is ok but there never was a GTA Fiero planned that we know of.
Sorry, it is as simple as covering holes and nothing more. The TA emblem just happpened to have the same bolt pattern and fit the bumper.
This car has had a hard life but not as hard as some of the other Fiero pototypes.

The truth is sooo boring. You could have said that the Fiero was originally going to be renamed Firebird GTA for the 4th generation, but the managment decided to just kill the Fiero instead.

With the Fiero the truth is much better most times than a lie.
Like the 1990 Fiero design was grafted to the 1993 F body Camaro and Trans Am. So the truth is the 4Th Gen was derived from the Fiero prototype design after the Fiero was canceled. This was quoted by Designer John Schinella the man who over saw both designes.
The problem with false fact bugs me as that is why we still have so much wrong history going around about this car. Until someone writes a accurate book to clear the air and the name on our cars we will still have to live with the false stories.
The true story of the failure of GM and the mistakes and failures of those behind this car at Pontiac would make a good soap opera.

I know, I was joking. It's annoying to me that people say the 1990 Fiero Prototype looks too much like the 4th gen F-body. That is a distortion of history, because the truth is the other way around.
To me that design, whether you call it 1990 Fiero or 4th gen F body, is one of the best designs that has ever come out of GM.

The 1990 wheelbase is identical, but they added a structure onto the back end that Pontiac called the "Magic Plate" that extended the rear of the car a few inches. This resulted primarily in a larger trunk and a trunk decklid separate from the motor cover.

I'd love to see the headlights and the trunk/engine lid(s) opened.
Wonder how difficult it would be to make some of those logos.... hmmmm..

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/382355/2 was the 20th show with lots of pics of the prototypes. The 25th (next year) will be at the same place. Sorry on the site, I haven't updated it in a long time...

I knew you were kidding.
I just get annoyed at so much false info on the Fiero and it just leads to all kinds of stories some good and most bad.
I really would love to see a good book on the Fiero come out and set the record straight. Hulky has far from told the entire story and even he awas gone from he Fiero program in 1984.

You seem to know a lot of the history, why don't you write a book???
I know a lot of history but I don't know enough for a good book.
Two problems with a book as it takes a lot of time to research and I have a job. Also finding someone who will publish it. I have talked to several Pontiac writers and they said that most publishers are not intersted in doing another Fiero book. They don't think the market is there.
Now would be the time to do it as many of the players are still alive. Once they are gone so is the history.
It took me two years to get the info just on the 1990 emblems for the HPP story that was published.
We need to get Fred to do a book as he already has the most info and contacts. DId you hear that Fred?
