The first state on GAS, the Route 50 Fiero tour, is Maryland.

Last month's discussion was of Virginia. And there are now some pics in that thread, too.

This month's topic is West Virginia.

Wulf Berg's book, US50 Coast to Coast, is not separated by state. It doesn't even have page numbers. Instead, each day of his trip is another chapter, and the page count starts over with each chapter (e.g. "Day 02 - Page 1"). This is fine when having a casual read of his journey, but not so much when going back time and again as a reference guide. Nobody would recreate that trip exactly the same way, traveling the same number of miles each day, and stopping in the same places. This is one reason I would love for us to publish a new book, detailing our own trip. But I digress.

Wulf enters West Virginia describing the road winding up & down mountain ranges. At Romney, there is an excursion train offering a scenic 3-hour tour (a 3-hour tour sounds familiar... where have I heard that before? ), but I doubt that we will want to take the time for that. These discussion topics already have us talking about spending extra time in DC and Virginia than I had originally envisioned. But we shall see how this all works out, and later delete from our plans whatever stops must be deleted in order to ensure we'll be in the right places at the right times.

He says Mount Storm usually has fog so heavy the locals call it "Pea Soup Mountain", but the view is nice on clear days.

He enjoyed the forest of Cathedral State Park at Aurora. Then more mountainous roads, causing him to average "about 20 miles an hour". He mentioned the Cheat River, and Cool Spring Park.

Then, near Grafton, he stopped at Tygart Lake State Park. He was very impressed with the lodge and restaurant, and says "This state park is very beautiful and I highly recommend it."

He suggests detouring a little farther south to a covered bridge called Philippi Bridge, where in 1861, the North and the South fought the first land battle of the Civil War. But again, this is something I am not sure we will take time to see.

In Grafton, Wulf toured a church and a military cemetery. Then on to Bridgeport, Clarksburg and Ellenboro, and stayed at North Bend State Park at Cairo. Then he made his way to Parkersburg, where you exit West Virginia by crossing the Ohio River.

Check out the map on the GAS website... Click the logo in the sig, go to "Route 50 Info", and select West Virginia.

And check out a few items of GAS merchandise at http://www.zazzle.com/justsaygo. Stickers, mugs, keychains and mousepads.

I hate bumping my own topic to the top, but the forum was very active yesterday (for a Sunday that is), and this got pushed to Page 2 quickly, before it got many views.

Do any of you live near these places, or ever been there? Got any pics?

Well I have lived near Charleston, WV the capital of the state my whole life. I'm about 2 hours from Clarksburg and about 1 hour from Parkersburg WV. I have never taken RT 50 from thoses two cities. I believe that you are in for a fun ride on a 2 lane road. I have been to Grafton which is has the only two national cemeteries in West Virginia. Mother's Day was founded in Grafton on May 10, 1908; the city is the home to the International Mother's Day Shrine. You are on a 2 lane road going through the town. Parkersburg will be the biggest town you are going through. This time of year with the trees turning colors and all will be a beautiful drive. If you have any troubles please don't hesitiate to ask me for asistance. Enjoy.

My post is a little late because I missed this thread. My Grandparents live in Mt. Storm, It's the house on the left across from the mountaineer motel, right on the peak of Allegheny mountain. Their front door sits facing route 50. There was a red Fiero parked right next to their house when I was there this past summer. Was it still there? I travel up route 50, right through Romney, every time I go up there. One of my favorite places in the world. I have been to Cathedral State park several times. The smallest functioning church and post office in the U.S. is near there. Did you see the wind farm? Blackwater falls is near there also, but not on route 50. I camp there often. I wish I could have made that part of the trip. Thanks for bringing back memories, all of them good. I could post pics if you'd like.

sorry for the late post did not relize that Wv was already done. i can say that going down 50 is a blast on a bike not sure about in car. the road is very twisty. i live like a min off of 50 here in parkersburg there is not much here but we can try to get some people together and talk fiero there a few hotels around here and few bars if some want to go out and drink a little. if that is not in your books the whole drinking and stuff there is a bowling ally and rollerskating rink. i would like to drive some with other fiero and posibly ride in one that has a swap if someone doesnt mind. if you want to know anything else about parkersburg let me know and i will try to find out more on places to see and things to do. jsut drop me a pm or something. no only that if you get close and something happens i am more then willing to help you out if i can.

I don't have much valuable information to add....just a few pics from where I rode 50 on the bike during Mountainfest 2006. Was a lot of fun.

Thanks a bunch! I'll be in touch later as the event gets nearer. And I bet we can get you that ride you were asking about, in an engine-swapped Fiero, if you haven't done it before then.

Patoot - you have a pm.

Edit to add... hairpin turns between Aurora and Grafton...

Just realized I also have a pic of the military cemetery that was mentioned in Grafton. I had to stop to salute my brothers and sisters.
