Ok so we just found out, my wife (fierochick on here) and I are going to be parents for the first time. Which means this will be the last "Fiero Road Trip" vacation for probably the next 16 years. Our goal is to go back to the places we would visit when we were just starting out as a couple. We are leaving B.C. Canada at 7am Wednesday March 18th and hope to make it through Customs by 8am and into Washington state. We'll be returning around April 6th. We will be in my 88GT with a small trailer to carry 7 days worth of clothes and related camera's laptops and tools lots of tools and spare Dist shaft with coil, module, and sensors. We are going to drive through Washington and into Oregon. We are going to stay just south of Portland for a few days checking out things, then head West to the US Coast Hwy 101. Probably stay a few nights in Seaside, then up to the old Fort Astoria and kick back. We are also stopping in Newport/Lincoln City and Coos Bay. I have not been the Ripley's Believe it or Not show in years so well check that out and the Wax Museum at the same time. I don't know how far down the coast we are going to go. We intend to stop at several of the "Leather That Works" shops and find any cool car spots. I know there is a place somewheres down there that you can drive your car onto the beach. So if you know that place, please speak up.

Now for my real questions.

Radar Detectors Legal or Illegal, if illegal do they really enforce it?
Cell phones chatting while driving I usually use my car kit, but when I get a call I'll usually grab it and keep it to my ear for short conversations.
Speeding I know places in Washington are 75mph and the average cruising is 85-90mph the last time I was down there. Is that still pretty safe if you keep it under 85mph.
I'll be dropping the trailer at my fathers place in Aurora and doing the week long coast stuff with just Her and I and the car. Are there any good MUST SEE places?

I have not spent much time on the Washington coast are there any really good places to go to have some fun.

For me I am into computer stuff and car stuff. Thinking about picking up some tools while I am down there. I have to visit a few Harbor Freights too.
The wife is into Wiccian stuff and cars and computers. Are the "Big Lot" stores still around there.

Are there any events Pre Planned for any of the Portland Fiero groups. (please don't do a run for me, my schedule will be non existent, however if you got something already going I'd love to drop by assuming I am in the area at the time.)

Now for the big favor, and this is really out there. I wouldn't normally ask, BUT seeing as the wife is pregnant, I want some back up emergency contacts if something goes drastically wrong. (IE engine decides to toss a rod or main bearing) My father has a small shop in Aurora I can work on the car. However if I am 100 miles from where I need to be, I'd like to be able to contact a local person just to get Lisa some place warm and comfortable to relax instead of sitting on the highway waiting for a tow to get there. I don't foresee any problems with the car, but I'd like to be prepared for the worst. So if you are going to be anywhere near where we are going to be and don't mind sharing an emergency contact number and city you live in, that would be very cool.

Our route will be Surrey B.C. Canada down I-5 through Bellingham, Seattle, Tacoma, and all the way down to Portland, then on to Aurora Oregon where my dad is. Well stay in the Portland to Salem area for at least 5 days. Then we'll head West out to the Ocean. I don't know the exact route, but the last time we were down there all the "good" hotels were in Seaside. So we might start fairly far south like Coos Bay, then take a few days of cruising around at the local shops and such then stop in Seaside for at least 2 days. Then on up to Astoria for another day, then back towards Portland. We have relatives in Salem that we want to visit while we are down there and friends scattered all over heck.

I'll try to post pics as we go, showing our route and people we have met on the drive. I'll even have google latitude running on at least one phone. If you don't know what it is, its a program that you install on a GPS enabled device. Running on Google Maps, it lets you track where you buddies are at and lets your friends know where you are. http://www.google.com/latitude/intro.html I personally only use it in the car. My gmail address is the one attached to it, david.bergquist@gmail.com

If you read this far, Thank You and have a great day.

Sunset Beach (near seaside) for sure, and There are places along the Oregon Coast where you are allowed to drive on the beach. Some of these places are restricted to certain times of the year. The information of when and where there is beach vehicle accessibility can be found on the left side of the Official Oregon State map put out by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) – Contact (503) 986-4000 for a copy of the map.

That is a great sounding trip. Speeders and cell phones are definately frowned upon here in Washington. I am on the eastern side of Washington, so won't be much help. But Amy and I had taken pretty much the same trip through Newport and Seaside last year. Beautiful drive. Good luck to you. Keep us posted on your adventures.

I don't know and can't answer any of your questions about your trip but, I wanted to congratulate you and the Mrs. on the upcoming joy you're about to receive. What a wonderful time in life for both of you. Don't get me wrong, I've reared two and you couldn't give me another but, rearing those two was a great experience. Well, at least till they start thinking for themselves.

in washington state... Radar detectors are legal and using hands free with your cell is the law. Talking on your cell without hands free is a secondary offence though so unless you get popped for something else while you are doing it you will likely not be stopped. Although, i am sure cops can find a reason to pull almost anyone over. Enjoy the trip.

Thanks for all the Congrats and help with the ODOT and Washington Laws.

I'll get the car kit mounted in a permanent fashion for the duration of the trip and leave it plugged in whenever I am on the road. (car kit is wired to the stereo so it uses the car speakers to broadcast the conversation and a lapel mic clipped to my visor.

I've got 12hrs to finish packing and 16hrs before we hit the road. (6am Wednesday we head for customs)

Again thank you all for the information, its going to be really handy on the road.

I'm in Astoria, watch out for the cops on Hiway 30 toward the coast and Seaside. Anything over 62 {limit 55mph} will likely get you a ticket. DO NOT EXCEED THE POSTED LIMITS IN MOST SMALL TOWNS- ESPECIALLY CLATSKANIE! It's a nice drive, but patience is a virtue. If you need info on local flavor or need some help, give me a PM and I'll get you my cell number.

I live near portland, and theres no reason to worry about talking on cellphones while driving. I do it all the time (although it is hard with no power steering) and I have driven past police whilst on the phone.

Will you be driving the 4.9L ??

Thanks for the heads up on Astoria, I'll keep the speed in check.

As to local flavor, if you know of any good places to stop and hang and have a bite to eat, maybe we'll give ya a shout when we are there and we can grab a bite someplace.

Unfortunately we'll be in the 88GT with the 2.8, my plans were to have the 4.9 5spd on this drive, even more so when I found out it will be the last Fiero road trip for us for a long time. But the 2+ months of snow on the ground and temps dropping to -15 really put a major slow down on the parts movement. I got a really late start on the tear down of the 87GT (thread is here, https://www.fiero.nl/forum/F.../HTML/098362-1.html)

Oh bummer I've always wanted to drive in a 4.9 (i'm considering the swap)

but that's understandable, the weather is always beatin' us northwestern'ers down. Although some more than others haha

If you are ever in the area feel free to call I have a 87GT and 88 coupe that probably would like to see some relatives!

I don't eat out much so I don't have much of a recommendation food wise

Thank you Ron, I've emailed your contact info to my cell. I'll try to give ya a buzz when we end up in that area. I can't guarantee anyone when or where we are going to be, I am half tempted to turn all the clocks off and just kinda cruise and do our thing and relax.

Everyone that has PM'ed me your info, I've sent it to my phone and I'll have it saved. This will probably be the last time i am going to be able to check the forum before we get on the road.

Thank You to Everyone and I hope to see as many people as we can.

Well we made it, 550kms and smooth sailing. We must have saw no less than a dozen cars pulled over by your friendly local police, plus one major roller over accident where the pickup was on its side blocking traffic around Olympia, and a nasty fender bender around Seattle. Aside from that, it was clear sailing. Average speed was 70mph, with a few sprints to 90 to get around some slower moving trucks and a bunch of time in the 65mph cruise. We took the longer way around and jumped the 205 before Vancouver Washington and shot over to Oregon City then down 99E to Canby and Aurora. The plan was to stop in Canby and grab one of those Grandpa burgers and give it to my dad when we got to his place in Aurora. Sadly they didn't have a Grandpa burger, but he got the drift when we handed him a Pappa Burger and told him we tried for a Grandpa burger.

I have a few pics and I'll try to get them posted as soon as possible.

So far this is the one pic I have handy. This is in my dads front yard with the 88 before I removed the trailer. It's really amazing how much room we have when we come down. However by the time we are going back up, that trailer is going to be piled with stuff and straps all over hell. I actually did the trailer wheels black yesterday as it just look so out of place with black 88 wheels.

Congratulations on the upcoming arrival, I too am from the east side of oregon/washington so will be no help as far as emergency contacts or activities. I would like to clarify something though Washington changed its law in June of 08' so it is a primary offense to be talking on a cellphone while driving unless using a hands free device. U can and will get pulled over for it and only it. As far as i know Oregon has yet to change it to a primary offense, but it is a secondary. Anyway Best wishes to you and yours and have a great trip.

Thanks for all the offers guys, so far the car is doing awesome. I filled it up in Canby on Wednesday, drove all over hell, spent most of the day driving around Salem and only gone through little under 1/2 tank. We did get a bit carried away at Harbor freight in Salem. I'll post the Harbor Freight tools in my thread (engine removed from my 87GT) build thread in Tech section. I picked up 2 Paint guns, Trailer luggage cover and a few other misc items.

Yeah, read about your Harbor Freight trip. All the way from Canada, just to save a buck? I buy a lot of stuff there. It is easy to get carried away. Some of the prices are completely unbelieveable. But some of the prices do reflect quality. Just have to pick and choose. Hope that the wet weather over there isn't hampering your travels.

LOL, we are saving a fair bit more than a few bucks, but its just a bonus, we love coming down just for the alone time in the car on a relaxing drive just kinda bumping around and checking out shops and stuff.

As for the rain, what rain? I think there was a minor sprinkle on Thursday night, aside from that it has been so warm, the windows have been down, wearing just T-shirts and being totally comfortable, I think I even got a bit of a sun-burn today.

As a P.S. Note, I have still not added fuel to the car, we went from Aurora, to Clackamas Town Center, then all the way out to Salem and back to Aurora again. I am at well over 250 miles and still have a 1/4 of a tank left. If I would have known how good the mileage was going to be, I would have been properly documenting it.

Its in KM, but being down here and you tell a yank you were cruising along at 160 in your stock Fiero you get some really odd puzzled looks, so I have just started quoting almost everything in US MPH and MPG and Pounds.

I have been in love with that car since I first saw in on Arhcies page probably 10 years ago. I was actually thinking about building a clone to it as I love the Notchbacks style, but with the Fastback'esq traits of that car. However Lisa and I will be spending a bit of time with my Father on Sunday so I won't be coming out this weekend. I'll shoot for a time later in the week when we can come out in the 88.

good food awesome service.

LOL, I dang near grew up at the Top of the Hill. Back when it was just barley a corner place with wooden stools to sit in. I haven't been there in years though. Maybe we'll stop in there for breakfast.
Sorry for all the late replies guys, been on the road so much the past few days just out cruising, had very little time to relax.

Lisa and I were able to tear away for the morning and we met up with Fieroseverywhere with his very nice wife and daughter for breakfast out at Denny's on 82nd Ave near Clackamas Town Centre. Even popped over to his place and saw his 4.9 a very clean install.

Whew, we made it. After several side trips and stops, we are in Seaside in a nice 2 bedroom suite right on the beach. I'll try to post a quick pic up later. If there is anyone in the area that wants to come and hang out, we are going to hit the Promenade for dinner and drinks until about 8:30 or so tonight, Thursday March 26th. I picked up a local Sim card for my cell phone so I have a local phone number 503-928-9470. We are going to stay the night here, then drive down to Lincoln City and Newport.

Capt Fiero and Fiero Chick stopped by my house yesterday.I had never met them before, and they were great people . They appeared to be having a fun trip here on the Oregon coast, except the weather has been terrible. I showed them my cars and they were on their way to Newport about 125 miles south of my house near Astoria. They were supposed to meet up with the Purple Pavement Eater down at Philomath.

BJC Thank You for your hospitality, it was really great meeting you and seeing your cars. If you don't already have a thread regarding the mods to the V8 car, you should start one. The nose itself is something I have never seen before and kinda resembles the Marcos Mantis nose from Europe. Very Cool.

Well we left your place around 2pm, and by the time we made it even as far as Lincoln city, it was 7pm. Our 2 hotels that we usually stayed at were booked up, and with Philomoth being another 80 miles from Lincoln City and Lisa starting to get uncomfortable in the car, we made the rather painful decision to head for Salem. I was really looking forward to getting over to see the PPE, however the distance is only 70 miles from my fathers place in Aurora. I'm going to have to make the run a special drive out there to see it.

Again Thank You for your hospitality. Even Lisa commented on how nice you were. You have some really nice cars. One thing I meant to ask you, and totally forgot, it looks like you have a high rise intake on your Engine yet the air filter still clears the deck lid closed? Is there something special, or is that the way all of Arhcies motors sit. Lisa's SBC Fiero uses a low profile air filter and the deck lid still had to be clearenced to keep it from rubbing on the base of the deck lid.

I took a nice Sunday drive in the PPE today to meet Capt Fiero and Fierochick.

It was nice talking about Fieros and learning things about my car that I hadn't previously discovered.
It was great meeting Dave, Lisa and Dave's father.

It was really nice meeting you as well. I'm going to try and resize and post the pics that I took of your car. Unfortunately I don't have video encoding tools here or I would post the video as well. That will have to wait for me to get back to Canada.

Thanks for the compliments on the "86. It took about 4 years to get it to the point it is now. I did have some pics on the "custom noses" thread, but someone else posted them for me and they have timed out on the host site.
As far as the intake, it is an Edelbrock for Vortec heads along with an Edelbrock 1406 carb and I believe an Edelbrock 10" air filter. The filter is somewhat restrictive, but it took three trys to find one that would clear everything under the engine cover. It still leaves a small mark on the inside of the cover, so it's tight in there.
It was great visiting with both of you. I just wish the weather had cooperated better for you. Have a safe trip.

Ah where we live in BC, we are use to the rain, and for the most part it was still plesent to drive. It kinda made the Coast 101 Hwy and corners a bit boaring not be able to push it to the limits, but none the less we had tons of fun. I totally fogot to photo your cars when we were there. So if you have a couple pics feel free to post them up here and add it to the thread.

Also as Promised, here are the Pics of my 88GT and the Purpel Pavment Eater.

Congrats!
\Why can't you take both Fieros for a road trip every other year? Won't need the trailer then.

LOL, if I can find a way to legally make a 3 seater Fiero, (bolt the baby seat in the center and relocate the ECM/Center Console, we can still take the trips. We do plan to put the baby in Her Fiero and take both cars for club runs and other club events. However the long road trips, 2 cars just won't work as 1/2 of the fun is cruising along and talking just the 2 of us, and if we see something that looks cool, we always stop to check it out. Trying to coordinate that with a lead/tail car would take all the fun out of it.

It was a huge pleasure for me to see such an iconic Fiero in real life. I have been racking my brain on how to mount a car seat legally in a Fiero, otherwise this is my last Fiero road trip for a long time. So seeing as many Fiero's on this drive was one of my big things for this drive.

I still have the video here, but I won't be be able to post it till I I get back to Canada.

We started loading the trailer today, looks like I am going to have about 1000lbs of tools that I am coming back with. My father donated a Waterloo Top and Bottom box (6ft tall) Then proceeded to fill it with tools, I am brining back 1 Full size paint gun, one smaller detail gun, and one tiny Air Brush pencil gun. (good for pin stripes) Countless other tools and wiring stuff to finish my own V8 Fiero. Again thank you for bringing it out to see.

Well we are home. I am slowly going through the pics and video. I figure you guys will like to see the hauling trailer pics more than the Personal Vacation pics, so I sorted those first.

As I left Aurora the trailer felt really bad, I didn't know why, I thought just the weight must be making it funny. At 45mph even the smallest rut seemed to make the trailer pull and yank the car around. I was thinking at that rate, it would take me all day to get back to Canada. As I sped up, it got a bit better, 60mph and it felt alright. I was noting that I really had to keep my foot in it to keep up to speed and 5th gear was useless to try and accelerate in, 3rd and 4th was needed to make it up any steep hills. I was really starting to question the trip. Scroll down to the trailer wheel pics to hear what the issue was.

First layer on the trailer, we filled the tool box with all the tools and gear we bought. I actually took it to the scales to check the weight. More on that later.

We loaded the larger heavy items as far forward as possible to keep the tongue weight as much as possible

Lisa picked this up at GI Joes, its a large canvas bag meant to be strapped to the roof of a car, it was the perfect size to hold all our luggage and then strap it to the trailer. This proved to be really handy.

We started packing things around the tool box first.

Well that was almost it, I started strapping everything down, then Lisa comes out with 3 more bags of stuff we bought, and they are too big to fit in the trunk.

So they got tucked on top of the load box and then tarped and strapped. We bought this spiderweb cargo net that worked awesome. It goes over tarps and luggage and keeps the tarps from flapping in the wind at speed.

We bumped into Dave Mcgauge (spelling) from Jet City's at this stop in Washington.

I double checked all the straps and chains and lights and nothing had moved even an inch. I was very happy.

Suspension barley even looks loaded.

Canadian Inspection form and ratings

USA Ratings.

Continued from 1st paragraph

Now these pics are more important than you think. Note the tire pressure for full load. 60psi. Well most loads on the trailer are light, body panels, set of wheels and tires, light luggage. So I had the pressure down to 30psi so the trailer did not bounce all over hell. Well I never even gave it a 2nd thought, until I got on the road home. We drove about 120 miles with the trailer yanking the car all around, ruts would have the trailer swaying back and forth, really hard to maintain speed. That was until we stopped for breakfast at a drive through, and I grabbed the tire pressure gauge and checked the tires. They are rated for 60psi COLD when loaded. They were at 30psi and fairly warm for a tire. I ran over to a gas station, payed the 25 cents to use an air line, pumped them both up to 60psi warm, put both the rear car tires up to 38psi warm, and hit the highway again.

Man what a difference. I knew before I even made it down the freeway on-ramp FRACK ME, DUMB $HIT, Bone Head. Granted this is only my first year using a trailer, but still, not to do something as simple as check the tire pressure in the trailer tires before making a long trip. I had checked almost everything else. Oil, Water Trans fluid, lights, Just never checked the trailer tires.

I hit the highway and it was smooth as silk. I made a few higher speed runs just to check stability and it was rock solid. We were sitting at 70-80mph with a few spots we were up to 85mph. (120kph-140kph) Our first fuel stop took 6 gallons for 120 miles, the second tool 5.2 gallons for 150 miles. I was really happy with the improvement.

The box got kinda squished for the vice, but as I said earlier, we loaded the front of the trailer with as much to the front as possible to keep the tongue weight as high as possible.

Bench Top Drill Press.

Double chains with 4 enclosed hooks.

Ok weight check time. This are in KG as we were back in Canada when I finally found a truck scales that was closed that I could use.
Weights are trip weight with Lisa and I in the car and 1/2 tank of gas.

Front axle, 1386 lbs

Front and Rear Axle 3520lbs

Rear Axle 2134lbs

Rear Axle plus Trailer Axle 2772lbs

Trailer axle 638lbs (note car is still holding the tongue so this is only the weight the trailer axle is holding.

So total weight of car, Lisa and I, plus trailer and cargo is 1890 kgs (4158 lbs).

I was not carrying a spare tire, or jack, as I removed them for extra space. The front compartment was loaded with emergency tools and computer gear, (laptop, digital camera ect)
The rear compartment was loaded with other breakable stuff we bought that we did not want to load into the canvas bag, and Lisa didn't want me putting in the tool box. We had the car packed extremely tight even with the trailer. However for the first time in the history of our Fiero Road Trips, we did not have to stack things in the passenger compartment. Which made it a much more comfortable drive. We left Aurora at 10:30am and had made a couple stops to do some shopping on the way up, wasting about 2hrs, and still make it through customs and back at home by 6pm. The customs office was a breeze, I was sure they were going to haul me in and expect the cargo and open everything up. However we pulled up, showed them our passports, handed them the receipts totaling around $600 for the stuff we bought, the "Gift Letter" from my dad for the tool box and tools he gave me. They asked if we had any guns, tobacco, alcohol or fruits, we only had 3 bottles of wine and a few packs of cigarettes. They handed me the receipts and passports back and said have a nice day, they didn't even so much as open the trunk on the car. I was totally surprised and happy.
