Ok, I'm making some under dash boxes for 8" subs, and I'm not sure where to sell them, or what price I should sell them for. I was thinking I should put the first couple on eBay to see what price range they are going for, but I'd rather just sell them here if there is interest.
I've looked around online for prices, and that didn't really help at all sine there is no way I am pricing the boxes at $150+ like most custom fit boxes are selling for. I was thinking more along the lines of $75 for the box with the mounting hardware and modified heater core (is that what it's called?) cover. I will have at least two boxes done by the end of the weekend provided the rain stops so I can paint them. Worst case scenario, I can pull the prototype out of my car, even though I've made some slight modifications since then (extra reinforcement).
So what do you guys think? Give me some feedback here. I'm open to suggestions, comments, criticism, anything you want to say. I'm not opposed to eBay, but as I mentioned earlier I'd rather just stick with you guys if it is feasible.

I think people would pay for these. I think they would be worth more if you do your physics homework and specify a specific driver. If driver is not matched to cabinet, then the sound suffers. There is a science here that needs to be taken seriously. I have built speakers for years. People tend to just throw speakers in boxes and add a big amp.

if you're going for the most exposure what what you're selling i'd say ebay. with this thread you've just let everyone here know what you have, but i know, at least here localy, there are more fiero owners off the forum than on.

Well, the main reasons I'm trying to avoid eBay are 1) Anytime I try to sell something I get a lot less than expected, even if I see it currently going for a lot more from other people (yes I know I can set a reserve) and 2) I like dealing with the people on the forum. I will still most likely put them up on eBay at some point.
As far as the sound issue, NashvilleFiero, I'm not sure I understand fully what you are asking for. The sub box is around .3 cubic feet. I'll get a final calculation before I sell them, so that people can know which subs to look for. In my car I am running a Rockford Fosgate Punch Stage 1 hooked up to a Blaupunkt THA275. I just took a look around Crutchfield real quick, and there are maybe 4-5 subs available that meet the volume requirements, with RF and MTX being the only two under $100.
I will have pictures tomorrow if the rain stops so I can get them painted. If it doesn't, I'll just pull the one I already made out of my car tomorrow.

I think many people don't realize how well a good amp with a good sealed box with a nicely matched 8" will sound in a Fiero. ou don't need two 10s in such a small space. The Polk Momo is my favorite. It is on sale now at Crutchfiled at about $50+

I will be getting a sub enclosure this summer (before the 25th) but i have not decided to buy or built at this point. Pics and Prices go a long way. PFF or eBay... either way works for me.

What I am saying is, if you build a box with the correct volume that is one thing. If you want to maximize sound quality and output, you need to adjust for the Q of the various divers out there amongst many other things.

Ok, I spent my lunch break playing around with some of the formulas, but I'm not sure what I should be shooting for as far as "good" numbers, or what the numbers actually mean as far as comparison and perspective. What are the important variables/numbers I should be paying attention to?

Is this a fiberglass box or a MDF box? I also started on this project recently with the intent of making a few extra to sell. I made up a pattern last night and measured a hair over .375 cubic feet. I am going a bit different route with mine than most others (yours included)
BTW, I was looking at that same Blaupunkt THA line of amps because they are only 1-11/16 thick and I thought they would be good to conceal under the passenger seat, they were also on mega clearance from several vendors.
I am NOT using them (my brother does car stereo and told me that these amps compare VERY unfavorably compared to other amps of similar rating and specification.)

I would be interested in buying one no matter where you sold it. I hate that I keep getting out bid on ebay for the factory under dash sub and I don't really like the idea of modding my middle console.

Same thing here, I would totally be interested in one of these. I like my middle console to much to get rid of it.

OK, a little update. I just made one to start with, but it looks like I should start making them two at a time. It takes about 3 days from start to finish for one box. I was looking at putting out two boxes a week, and making them simultaneously look to be the only way to keep on schedule. After lunch I'll have a coat of paint on it, and I can get some pictures of the actual box. Until then, I took some pictures of the box in my car, and how it is mounted:
View from passenger seat... I've had two coworkers in the car, and neither could find it until I told them it was under the dash. Oh, and sorry about the feet in the shot
Just a shot of the sub mounted in place.
The sub mounts to the stock location, so no additional cutting or drilling is necessary.

How much are you charging per box, I'll take one. I don't like the idea of putting a speaker behind the seat or in the center console. You might as well leave the car unlocked to avoid replacing a busted window.

i would like a pm with a price...i might be interested in getting two of these i just have to check out my shallow mount pioneer 8' subs for box size specs but i think these are very close to .3 thanks tim..
Alright, the first box is almost done. I just need to go out and buy another chunk of metal to make the brackets... I can't seem to find the one I had.
I have been trying to think of the most fair way to choose who gets it since there are a few people interested. I'm gonna post it up in the auctions tomorrow at noon. That should give those who are interested enough time to read this. I'll post the specifics in the auction. Until then, you can join me in watching paint dry:
For anyone wondering, I've sprayed it with rubber undercoating. I've found that it helps prevent dings in the box, plus it is a little soft, so it helps seal around the speaker when you tighten it up without the need for a separate gasket. It also helps to hide the little imperfections and eliminates the need to sand it with 600 grit paper

Thats exactly what I've been looking for. I'm interested when you're up and selling them. I have the subs already just need something to mount them to. Nice work!

I guess I should mention that I'm putting it up in the auctions, but I'll still set the max price at $75. I'm not putting it in auctions to make extra money, it's just the easiest way to decide who get the first one.
I also was looking through the phone book and realized there is a fiberglass shop down the road from me. I'm gonna give them a call tomorrow and see what having them professionally made would entail.

You've inspired me... This is for anyone interested in installing the subwoofer enclosure.
I made the website for lenehanaudio.com.au and even made my own speakers. NashvilleFiero brought up a very important point about the correct speaker for the enclosure. The better the driver match, almost entirely regardless of price and quality of the driver the better the result.
If you read the enclosure page of the website I have listed, it's hard to attenuate standing waves in a curved and certainly in a round enclosure. Clearly that shape in this case, is the winning one for the job though, therefore I am not in any way ridiculing you over that. However, you may find if you're going to the expense of doing all of this work, and it will take time and cost money to set up properly (and lets face it, if you already love driving your Fiero - good tunes are just going to make it so much more a pleasure) be sure and get the most out of it.
I don't know what materials are currently being used, but unfortunately fibreglass can have a resonant frequency that may interfere with some of the upper bass (crossover frequency is going to be fun), producing coloration (see I even spelt colour US English) where dense materials will definately produce a better sound (curiously, my ex made dense sound like a bad thing when she used to tell me I was).
Also aside from that, a cheap and certainly easy and yet important thing to consider is dampening materials within the enclousure, this can produce improvements in a real value for dollar - bang for buck (pun intended) installation. Denser foams, like the sticky foam discussed in the aforementioned website, will make a difference - light ones will do sweet buggar all. An easy test is to have someone speak literally through a sheet of the material you're auditioning for the job, that sticky foam actually changes the pitch slightly but it's definately discerenable.
I figure if you're going to invest a few hundred of the folding stuff that keeps the sides of your wallet apart, you might as well have my 0.5 cents worth - and my free advice is worth every cent you'll pay for it too. FIGJAM.

p/m me when you have the rest of the orders filled, and more made - i'll take one too!
My Fiero used to have the "performance sound" and subwoofer, (its not there anymore) so there is a hole where the factory sub would have been - Will your box fit in there without any modifications?

I think we all have that same "hole" even if our cars didn't come with the extra speaker so his housing should fit just fine. My GT is getting something really similar to what he's doing. But i'm basing mine on ( don't laugh ) a plastic flower pot...

I did make a few of these and although they are not ideal if you are looking for that ground shaking bass it do sound good for the Fiero just add polyfil in the tube it makes a world of difference.

Finally a subwoofer design, that doesn't just cry out for someone to break into my car and swipe it! I've been looking for something relatively stealth looking, but nothing big and heavy or requiring me to cut into my firewall. I just came back from my audio guy (he's never worked on a fiero, but has done amazing work on my DD and alot of my friends modern cars) and he was didn't think anything could fit under the passengers side dash w/out getting in the way of the passenger's feet space. He's recommending putting components in the side doors, replacing the rear side panel speakers, and putting an amp behind the passenger seat...pretty basic stuff. He just didn't know where a sub would fit. He's thinking 10 inches, but I honestly don't think I need anything with that much volume for such a small cabin. Your design looks really good and your picts clearly show that your design will work under the dash without taking up feet space! I'd like to purchase one. When will these be available for sell?
Wow, a lot of responses. Sorry, I haven't had a lot of time to respond to everyone. With the response that I have received, there is no way I am gonna be able to meet the demand in a reasonable time frame. I have been trying to find a local company that can reproduce them for me. Unfortunately I haven't had much luck. I've searched within a 100 mile radius and the only thing I've been able to find are people that do hand laid fiberglass work (mostly for boat repair). If anyone nearby (basically, MD, DE, VA, PA) has any contact info for me, please let me know. I've done a little searching on yellowpages.com, but I'd like to know if anyone has any personal experience and can give a recommendation.
I'm going to continue making boxes at home until I get something worked out, but right now I'm working two jobs and working on remodeling a building for our upstart company (hence the need for a second job). I'll keep everyone updated and let you know when I have boxes available.

For what it's worth, I've had mine plainly visible in the passengers footwell for years now and no one's tried to steal it. It's a nice JL Audio sub, too. Then again, I don't know what part of San Jose you live in.

I'm not sure if you guys are aware, but this setup has been done several times already. (Golden86 & ly41181 to name a few) I certainly give you props for refining it and trying to market it. It looks good.
