edit **** plz see the thread in the EVENTS section to join in Ruckus 8 BAYTOWN banter! ****

https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum7/HTML/000242.html

------

Time is slipping past... and before you know it... the 1st or 2nd weekend in October will be among us!

South Central US Fiero owners know what that means!... RUCKUS!

To re-cap last years history, R7 was to be held in Galveston... a little storm named 'IKE' changed that.
We still had a Ruckus, it was hastily organized, but went off with great success in Lufkin, Texas.

For years, Ruckus regulars have clamored to have a Ruckus on the beach, and in '08 we were slated to have that... IKE unfairly took the Ruckus event from Houston/Galveston, and as a result it is only fair that organizers there get first right of refusal. Not being in the region, I don't know if the island has recovered sufficiently to host... I am hoping to get some feedback in this thread. Also, I don't want to force the event on anyone... LSF/GTriangle... you won't hurt anyone's feelings if the region isn't ready for it.

Ruckus founder Hodges & Stillwell (Cheever3000 & Stimpy) always wanted this show to become a tradition.
I am very pleased to say that indeed it did continue, and I would like to say fieroly (that means proudly in Italian, I think)... that it has become the most anticipated regional event for the end of the car show season. So there will be a Ruckus this year, the question is... Where? Typically the location is announced at the AAFO Spring Round-Up, this year, I held off pending info from Houston/Galveston.

If R8 (that sounds like an Audi model... oh, wait...) is not in Galveston... we do have other options. A potential host called and suggested Corpus Christi, but I don't know if that is too far for our wonderful Okie contigent. Also, it would kind of take the beach novelty away from Galveston, which did ask for a Ruckus first. One member from NTFC has an idea for a rolling Ruckus in Arkansas... nice idea, but that's a far piece for our AAFO regulars. That's not a veto mind you... I'm just sayin' is all.

To give an example... here's a map I made that gives 4 base start points for the 4 major regional clubs. 350 miles makes for a LONG 1 way trip for a weekend car show... Maybe not to some, but for others it may be too long a drive (health reasons... expense... time...) And then you have to drive back. Not saying anything beyond 350 miles is out mind you!... just giving a reference. I didn't want to alienate any regulars. 350 miles is going to take a good 6 hours to drive if you average 60mph. I also showed the previous Ruckus locations.

It brings a lot of fond memories. I can wait to make more!

Thanks for the kick in the pants.... I have been negligent on getting back to you. I'm still recovering from the loss of analog TV here this morning, but it would be nice to get some reconnaissance info from Galveston.

But your map sure makes Dallas/Fort Worth look like the golden triangle. Has that ever been considered?

Just an FYI, the 24 hours of Lemons will be in Houston again Oct 24 and 25 this fall. It might make a decent stop to watch the antics. Yes, we are planning to bring down the mighty Supra again. We finished 7th out of about 95 entries this spring and hope for a podium this time around.

Hurts my feelings that Heart o' Texas Fireos was left off that map.

College Station is in that 4 club zone. We have Texas World Speedway and a few parks where we could have a nice car show. This is a big college town, so there will be lots of hotels and about 25,000 college girls.

Tim... Maybe I SHOULD have included HoTFO in the olympic circle map... you are actually 3x larger than Go-Go...!
What I thought was cool, looking at the map,... was that the most centralized event for the 4 large clubs was the Waco/Gatesville Ruckus. Almost exactly what you had envisioned when you started the club.

Thunder, CS has been considered, and not ruled out for an event. Well, it got ruled out one year because aTm had back to back games in October. It was for R5. Fortunately, Baylor did not have that same problem and Tim did a bang-up job having an event.

Just a suggestion, the Cruise the Coast (over 4,000 classic cars) is Oct. 4-10 on the Mississippi gulf coast. Maybe we could do something in conjunction with it. I'll be there with my '72 Opel GT.

Check out the web site http://www.cruisinthecoast.com/About.htm You can click on the dash parts for other info. Also the weekend of the 16th and 17th is the Scarecrow Cruise in Madison, Mississippi. (near my hometown) so, I would be glad to host a Fiero group at this show.

I am going to go ahead and be the first to say that Mississippi is to dang far for me.

Not saying that we should do this - but there is a drag strip that is open in Temple that we can "rent" or use during a Saturday. If we go just to be there while it is open (in other words we will not be the only ones there), I believe the cost is something like $30 for "run as much as you care".

We could also time it with TMS' Laps for Charity - as they normally do one in the fall.

Bastrop State Park is a nice place and has a fun golf course.

I also like the idea that I have heard thrown around for Turner Falls in Oklahoma.

I am simply throwing out ideas.

Turner Falls, I had forgotten about that place. We went there before our senior year of high school, 1965. I think an Okie Ruckus would be due pretty soon.

Galveston isn't "too" beat up anymore.

Like previously mentioned, the Lemons race will be here in October so that'd be fun. (Hopefully we'll do better in October than we just did in Louisiana, lasted about an hour and a half before the headgasket blew. Sigh.)

2 more ideas -

Dublin - I know a great restaurant, have a few connections at the Dr Pepper Museum, could show the cars at the park, maybe head over to Stephenville for dinnner.

Ghost Town Tour - find 3 or 4 good ghost towns to go to. Something about the idea of a Ghost Town which no longer exists and Fieros....I don't know....just something I like about that.

There is an Alamo movie set somewhere around San Antonio that would be interesting to visit. It was where John Wayne's movie was filmed.

I'll put my choice as Galveston. It has been the choice for the Gulf coast Fiero people for several years. Last year was their time and it couldn't happen. If I remember, this location has been on the books for about 3 or 4 years. Its time came last year. Now, let's have it this year.

We have actually had a mini Ruckus (before the Ruckus was officially born) in Galveston. New Year's weekend in 2002, I believe.

Jonathon, let me know what I can do or contribute. I know the area well. Maryjane is also one who can contribute and knows the area.

I believe Galveston to be a very undesirable place. It is barely in the 3 club zone. Furthermore, it's on the coast, so it's not in between any of the clubs. Some place inland would logically be preferable.

There are plenty of locations in the 4 club zone.

We were on the island this past February, and It is still a mess there. My grandson lives there. I read today where 90% of all the trees on the island are blown over or dead from all of the salt water. Galveston's Mayor is trying to get Unka Sam to demolish the wasted homes and trees. This mornings Houston Chronicle. If you haven't been to the island since Ike visited, talk to some one who has before you make up your minds. My input would be any place but Galveston this year.

Sorry if this is a bit rude, but I don't know why people even try to live there. The whole place gets demolished by a natural disaster every few years. The insurance rates must be sky high. I think Darwin's Natural Selection would have something to do with people who say "I'll live here in the middle of a natural disaster area on a barrier island."

October is at the end of hurricane season. Galveston might not be there anymore. It might be a bit risky to plan an event there.

I almost agree with you but why does anyone risk anything? Why do you get behind the wheel and drive? Don't you know how many car accidents happpen in a day? I like the Idea of Galveston.

Galveston WILL happen... the question is when. This year? Next year? R-11?
Ruckus regulars have been wanting it for a while, and Oklahoma agreed that they want it too.

The whole bit about posting a map with zones was to give some perspective. I would LOVE to have a Ruckus in Amarillo. I think it would be fantastic... (you may raise an eyebrow... but if you're familiar with Palo Duro, Rt-66, Alibates, Caddilac Ranch, the Texan... it would make for a neat show...) but looking at it on paper... I fear it may just be too much to ask of Houston or SA... that's a long drive from FW!... much less adding another 5 hours if you're coming in from Houston.

Since I had an offer about Corpus, I wanted to see what it looked like on paper in relation to the other events. The zone thing is not a 'yes or no'... the majority will decide that... but you can see that places like South Padre, El Paso, Big Bend, Amarillo... I love this state being vast, but we need to be reasonable too.

Talimena Talimena Talimena!!!

Talimena scenic!

Talimena Drive: A National Byway

is a gorgeous 54-mile route, which spans one of the highest mountain ranges between the Appalachians and the Rockies. One breathtaking panorama follows another as this National Scenic Byway winds along the crests of forested peaks between Mena, Arkansas, and Talihina, Oklahoma. Visitors to the area can learn about Native Americans, the Civil War and even Viking explorers as they enjoy Talimena's scenic beauty and natural wonders.

Q: When is the best time to view the fall foliage?

A: The leaves start turning around the end of October and there is usually color until the middle of November or later depending on the weather. To see the most color plan to visit the last week of October or the first week in November. Each week after the 15th of October, the Talihina Chamber of Commerce posts a color update and pictures on their website (www.talihinacc.com). Lodging information is also available on this website.

bringing this back to the top.

I've had news from our Houston/Galveston friends, and circumstances and events in their lives preclude them from being able to host a Galveston Ruckus this year.

Upon learning this, I got a hold of Tom, my OKC contact, and asked him to ask around to see if Corpus Christi was too far of a trek to make. He talked to a few of the regulars, and IIRC said that 3 of the 4 would not make that run. It is just too far for a weekend. Google puts it down as 605 miles, one way. That makes for an immensely long Friday down and Sunday back for them... He also said something to the affect of not worrying about who can and can't come from Oklahoma, to do what I had to do. Well thank you Tom, you're good folk. Now this was left on my cell VM, and the signal was not too great, so if I got any of that wrong... jump in here and correct me.

And I talked to maryjane. He sagely suggested that when/if Galveston is to happen... that we always have a Ruckus backup plan, October being in Hurricane season and all. So I talked to Scott Anderson, who had offered CC as a possibility back in April. We discussed the distance logistics... it was determined that Corpus could be a Galveston short notice back up, and I really appreciate his offer. He just wanted to make sure that a Ruckus happened somewhere. thanks sir!

So where does that leave us?
.
.
.
.

Well, it leaves me with a few possibilities... and I am trying not to repeat locations just yet.

We get a host person closer than 605 miles (the distance from OKC to CC) from the 4 club cities...
--- or ---
We use one of my ‘backup’ cities.
(everytime I travel, I pretend to create a Ruckus event out of it)… I am weird like that…
On tap would be Shiner/Gonzales. ….mmmm… Shiner on tap…
still a far drive, but It is an hour closer to OKC than Galveston, and is closer to OKC than the R6 Kerrville Ruckus.

Also... trying not to sound too rude... but if you make a suggestion for "why not xxxx?" and you happen to live in xxxx, and xxxx happens to be logistically feasible... I'll not organize a Ruckus for you. Been there and done that for Ruckus 2, and to type plainly, I don't want to do that again. In other words, if you want to showcase your backyard... that's great! Do not expect me to showcase your backyard for you. Not saying I (or others) won't try to help... just saying that I've been left holding it all, and it put an unfair and unexpected hardship on me.

BTW, that only happened once... other R events, the local hosts like CenTex, maryjane, Ken/Heidi/Revin, cliffW... all showcased their area with little to no outside help.
A few of the nuts have even asked for it to come back! )

Tim, it will be either the 1st weekend or 2nd weekend in October... host persons' priviledge. Some have preferred the 2nd weekend because their work gives them Columbus Day off (2nd Monday in October)... at AT&T... we don't even get MLKj day off... so those people should count themselves lucky. grrr. ( <--- jealous)

If I organize, I am leaning strongly towards the 1st weekend in October as it already coincides with scheduled vacation. I would need to talk to the Spoetzel Brewery and a hotel in Gonzales before I could commit though.

I need to give people a chance to mull over my previous post first though.

when was the last time Oklahoma hosted this event?

i think no matter where you put it someone will be alienated until it's in a central location like DFW
which will get it's turn soon.

on the 3rd weekend in October the Texas Mile event is going on it would be really cool to see some cars hit the 200mph mark.
not that any of our Fieros would be doing that unless you strap on a JATO.

the Laps for Charity will be Sept. 26 doesn't fall with the RRR dates.

a date should be picked then a place real soon.

hallelujah! Tom Slick is organizing the Ruckus! Where in Oklahoma will we be going? Lots of people have mentioned this 'Turner Falls' in the past... but I've never been. 'Oklahoma' was one of those places where I had determined that I'd rather let a local organize as opposed to me mucking it up

or are you just joking?

--edit to add:
The state of Oklahoma hosted Ruckus 1. The Red River Ruckus in 2002, North of Lake Texoma. It was organized by a man from Houston named Chuck Hodges (cheever3000). Stimpy assisted but had to step back at some point... he was living in Oklahoma at the time. JohnF and I helped Chuck in the final stages in place of Stimpy. I had tried to get that same lodge in '06 for Ruckus 5... but the lodge was in the process of changing ownership and could not promise us rooms. Fortunately, Tim had a ready made weekend event looking for an excuse.

Ruckus is primed for an Oklahoma return... is there an organizer?

This thread has been dormant for three days. Is no one willing to step up to th plate and host the Ruckus this year except Blake?

If I was closer to TF I would plan it - but I can't being this far away.

Heck - at this point we just need something done - or this year's Ruckus may not happen?

Exactly--looking for someone to step up and offer to host the event this year.

(I have had previous plans dumped upon me by my better half--we have to go to NYC in late Sept--perish the thought, but I can't get out of it)

NTFC stepped in--in a pinch-- and did it way out of their region last year--at no small expense I imagine--due to hurricane Ike. Not fair to expect them to do it again.

The only reason I am not offering to organize it is that I, like Blake, think that it is too early to start repeating areas.
C'mon - SOMEONE step up and organize this. Please???
2nd Weekend of October is one of the only weekends I have off and I would love to do something with the Fiero crowd since I really haven't been able to make many of the last number of events.

I wish I could step up and help organize but I'm about to undergo a colon removal surgery in several days so I'll be a bit busy (or rather, able to do nothing) with the recovery process!

I do want to throw out the idea though, if it is in the Oklahoma area, consider Noble drag strip as an option to include. I know they do a lot of events there, particularly for imports, but I am not sure on pricing or anything.
