I have developed a fix for the "phantom wiper" problem. You know -- you're driving down the road, and your wipers make one swipe of the windshield. Or you turn on your turn signal, and get a wiper swipe. My fix requires no soldering or disassembly of anything. You just connect one wire from my little box to one of the wires on the connector to your delay wiper assembly with a clamp-on splicer, and connect the other to an existing screw. In 5 minutes or less, your problem is solved. I have not decided on a price for this, but I'm thinking $15.00 post paid in the US, and maybe $20.00 elsewhere. I will not sell any of these until I actually have some made (no "pre-orders" taken, like some have done -- I got suckered by one of those myself.) I only have the prototype now (on my 86 SE, and working fine), but I will make more if you indicate an interest.

What are you doing, just putting a cutoff to the power for the wiper switch ? The easy fix to me is just replace the switch since a defective one is what causes it. I do appreciate you taking time to invent something though, so dont take me wrong.
hm. never heard of this issue before. interested to know how your "box" works tho

It's not a cutoff. At the risk of someone else doing this, and stealing my sales (after all, the purpose of selling something is to make a buck or two), I'll give you some info (but not specifics).
It's a spike suppressor. The "phantom wipes" are caused by electrical spikes coming into the delay board. The spikes could be caused by a bad switch, or anything else that might produce electrical spikes -- it doesn't matter. Suppressing them cures the problem. Even if you replace the switch, you might still have another source of spikes that could cause a phantom wipe. I've heard of people replacing their switches and still getting an occasional one.

Well, it looks like there's an interest in this. I'll go to Fry's during my lunch break, pick up a few parts, and start making these. When I get some made, I'll put up a notice in the Market section.

I've got a phantom wipe and it drives me crazy. I get a swipe on every turn.
I'm in if it works.
It sounds like you have a severe case. PM me your address -- I'll send you an evaluation unit for testing. If it works for your case, I'll know it's good.
I found enough parts at Frys to make 8 of these. I already have more than 8 people interested, so I ordered more parts online. The final version looks like this:
I have built 5 so far, and put one in my car, to replace the prototype (which was just dangling parts not in a box). Installed, it looks like this:

And no, a new switch doesn't always solve the problem. I replaced the switch on my 86 with an 88 switch, and re-soldered a burnt connection on the board. The problem went away for about 6 months, but it's back. I've never had the phantom wipe issue on my 88, so maybe it's native to the earlier cars.
It doesn't rain much here, so I just leave them unplugged. Would be nice not to have to get out and plug them in if the skies look threatening.

I've never had this problem on my stable of 88's but have had it on my first Fiero an 86 , does it affect 88's?
I don't have the problem on my 88 either, but it does have a problem that may be related. Every time I turn the wipers off, I get one more swipe. I don't get that on my 86.

My previous 88 never did it in the 11 years I owned it. I have not driven the current 88 enough to tell if it will do it yet. Does anyone know if the 88 wiper set up is different? Great fix!

I used the capacitor kit on my 86 and it worked fine. if this mod works well, it is much easier to install although I am no fan of squeeze on connectors but that is a personal thing...
Good luck!

If you got one, you could always remove the squeeze on connector and connect it by any method you like.

I have had the ghost wipe on my 88, it doesn't occur frequently, like with the turn signal switch or every so often, but it has happened... maybe it's just my car though... it does some very strange things for me! laugh.. just ask Max!!

Mine only does the phantom swipe when I turn the key into the on position. It will make one swipe and then be done with. Will this fix this issue as well lol. Been looking for something like that forever, hopefully this would do the trick, if so I'm interested.

Closest thing to this I've seen on the 3 Fieros I have had was after going to the car wash, and spraying under the front hood, the wipers wouldn't stop until the motor dried out. I had to pull the fuse until that happened.

I had that happen to mine, too. It's not related to the "phantom wiper" problem -- any Fiero will do this if you get the delay module wet.

Okay I got around to installing mine. I had a severe case of phantom wipe. With each and every turn signal I would get a wipe. So I got the module as a beta tester.
Shipping was super fast.
Packaging was excellent.
Instructions were well written and very detailed.
The module was well built and the inclusion of the crimp connector was nice. Some don't like crimp connectors and you don't have to use it, but in this non-critical application I think it's fine.
Tools needed are minimal, just a 7 mm socket and a set of pliers for the crimp connector.
It really did only take 5 minutes or less.
Results...
For me a definite improvement. I still get an occasional phantom wipe, but it went from 100% to something less than 20%. My delay board must really be in bad shape and I should replace it, but for less severe cases this should clear it up to where you never get the phantom wipe.
